In the heart of a scenic valley, there lived an old man named Li, who had spent his whole life protecting the forest that surrounded his village. Over the decades, he had witnessed the destruction caused by illegal mining and hunting. Many species were endangered, and some had even died out. Li knew that if people didn’t do their part, the entire ecosystem would be wiped out.
One day, a group of opponents arrived, planning to cut down trees for agricultural expansion. Li felt angered and anxious. He called a council meeting and claimed that such actions would affect not only the wildlife but also the villagers’ health. He urged everyone to take action before it was too late.
Li set out to organize a collection of volunteers. They swallowed their fears and began to restore the damaged areas. They planted trees, cleaned the river, and recycled waste. Li also used informative essays to raise awareness about conservation. He summed up his speech by saying, “We are all at risk if we don’t protect our home.”
Thanks to Li’s efforts, the village switched to solar energy and organic farming. The mass decrease in pollution was noticeable. Even the local committee supported his innovative ideas. Years later, the valley was once again filled with life. A memorial was built to honor Li’s work.
Li’s story reminds us that every individual can play a role in conservation. It is not just about saving trees; it is about saving ourselves.

When 16-year-old Maya first moved to the small town of Willow Creek she felt like an outsider. As an outgoing and passionate artist, she struggled to connect with her reserved classmates, who seemed more interested in scrolling through social media than discussing art. One rainy afternoon, while she was sketching in the park, she noticed an elderly man sitting on a bench, staring at a painting of a sunset.
“That’s incredible,” Maya said, approaching him. “Did you paint it?” The man smiled and nodded. “I’m Mr. Thompson,” he said. “I used to be an educationalist, but I’ve always loved art.” Maya spent the next hour talking to him about her work, and he gave her valuable feedback on her sketches.
Over the next few weeks, Maya and Mr. Thompson became close friends. He taught her about the principles of color theory and encouraged her to participate in a local art competition. Maya was initially nervous, but with Mr. Thompson’s support, she submitted a painting of the town’s old bookstore.
When the results were announced, Maya won first place. She ran to Mr. Thompson’s house to share the news, only to find that he had been admitted to the hospital with the flu. “I’m so sorry I can’t be there to celebrate with you,” he said over the phone. “But I’m incredibly proud of you.” Maya left the hospital with tears in her eyes, grateful for the unlikely friendship that had changed her life.

Three scientists made breakthrough discoveries on the working mechanism (机制) of the immune system. They identified “regulatory T cells,” which function as the immune system’s security guards, preventing immune cells from attacking the body’s own tissues (组织) and causing severe autoimmune diseases.
The immune system’s major role is to distinguish foreign microbes (细菌) from the body’s own cells and then attack them. However, microbes can develop similarities to human cells. If this pretence succeeds, it can lead to a form of biological “friendly fire,” where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells.
It was long believed that the immune system was mainly protected by T cells that can recognize and kill microbes. However, some puzzling autoimmune reactions pointed to the existence of another, more complex regulator. Immunologist Shimon is among the scientists who conducted further research. In 1995,he discovered in mice that there is a particular group of immune cells, which he named “regulatory T cells,” working as the body’s security guards that stop immune cells from attacking self-tissues.
Meanwhile in the early 2000s, bio-technologists Brunkow and Ramsdell researched why a specific type of mouse was particularly sensitive to autoimmune diseases. Their experiments took many years. While mapping a mouse’s genome (基因组) today takes only days, back then it was like looking for a needle in a huge pile of straw. They finally found the source of trouble was a variation of the gene named Foxp3, and further discovered that a similar error in a human’s gene causes IPEX syndrome, a serious autoimmune disease.
Afterwards, Shimon linked their research to his own, proving that Foxp3 aids in the creation and the operation of regulatory T cells, ensuring that the immune system is strong enough to fight off microbes and at the same time controlled enough not to injure the body.
Their foundational discoveries have paved the way for potential new treatments for autoimmune conditions, as well as more effective cancer treatments and reduced deaths after organ transplants.
12. What is the result of “friendly fire”?
A. Killing of foreign microbes. B. Immune cells’ development.
C. Wrong attack on human cells. D. Microbes’ successful disguise.
13. Why did Shimon conduct the mice research?
A. To win an award. B. To treat a disease.
C. To solve a puzzle. D. To defend a belief.
14. What’s the purpose of mentioning “a needle in a huge pile of straw” in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the difficulty of doing the experiments.
B. To introduce the long history of medical science.
C. To emphasize the important role of the lab mice.
D. To show the rareness of an autoimmune disease.
15. What is the root reason of autoimmune diseases according to the discoveries?
A. Regulatory T cells are unique. B. The immune system is under attack.
C. Microbes force into the human body. D. An error happens to the Foxp3 gene.

Jason had always loved basketball, but at 17, a sudden knee injury during a school match changed everything. The doctor’s words were frank: “You may never play competitively again.” Jason sank into silence. Basketball had been his passion, and his identity. Without it, he felt lost.
Schoolwork was boring, and seeing others practice reminded him of what he had lost. His teammates tried to cheer him up, but their games no longer included him. For weeks, he avoided the court, wandering the empty playground after sunset. One evening, his PE teacher Mr. Allen approached. “Injury took away your game, not your spirit,” he said. “There are other ways to stay close to the sport you love.”
Curious, Jason joined the school’s sports journalism club. At first, he hesitated, thinking it had nothing to do with real basketball. But as he interviewed players, wrote match reports, and analyzed strategies (策略), he rediscovered the beauty of the game from a new angle. He learned how strategy, teamwork, and perseverance mattered as much off the court as on it.
His articles grew sharper, and soon he was covering regional competitions. During one intense final, he met a player who had overcome a shoulder injury to lead his team to victory. Their conversation struck Jason deeply: setbacks made us stronger. He began guiding younger athletes, sharing lessons from both his playing days and his recovery.
Gradually, Jason got his confidence back. Though he could not run or jump on the court, he helped his favorite sport in a new way. His pain turned into valuable experience, and his loss became a way to encourage others. One bright afternoon, standing by the court and watching an exciting match, he felt the joy he had lost for a long time.
Suddenly, one of the young players fell down on the court.

As soon as the match was over, the boy came to find Jason.

前文“Positive relationships are the basis of a happy and satisfying life. Research has consistently shown that people with strong social connections are healthier, happier, and more flexible in the face of challenges.(积极的人际关系是幸福和充实生活的基础。研究不断表明,拥有强大社会关系的人更健康、更快乐,面对挑战时更有韧性。)”点明了积极关系的总体益处。后文“Whether it’s with family, friends, or colleagues, developing these relationships can have a significant impact on our well-being.(无论是与家人、朋友还是同事,发展这些关系都能对我们的幸福产生重大影响。)”
前文“When we are going through difficult times, having someone to rely on can make all the difference.(当我们经历困难时期,有一个可以依靠的人会带来巨大的不同。)” 后文“This emotional support helps us to cope with stress and anxiety and gives us the strength to keep going.(这种情感支持帮助我们应对压力和焦虑,并给我们继续前行的力量。)”
后文“We are social creatures, and we have a natural need to connect with others. When we feel connected to others, we are more likely to feel valued and accepted. This sense of belonging can enhance our self-respect and confidence and help us to develop a positive self-image.(我们是社会性生物,天生需要与他人建立联系。当我们感到与他人有联系时,我们更可能感到被重视和接纳。这种归属感可以增强我们的自尊和自信,帮助我们形成积极的自我形象。)”整个段落都在详细阐述“归属感(sense of belonging)”的来源和作用。因此,空处必须直接点明本段核心是“归属感”。A项“积极的关系也为我们提供一种归属感。”不仅直接点题,而且其中的“also”一词巧妙地承接了上一段关于“情感支持”的论述,使文章论述脉络清晰流畅。故选A。
后文“They can challenge our assumptions, expose us to new ideas, and encourage us to step out of our comfort zones.(它们可以挑战我们的假设,让我们接触新想法,并鼓励我们走出舒适区。)”
后文“Sharing experiences, laughter, and love with others can make even the ordinary moments feel special.(与他人分享经历、欢笑和爱能让平凡的时光也变得特别。)”

故填which。
故填more efficient。
故填It。
故填an。
故填is limited。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, one of the young players fell down on the court. Jason’s heart skipped a beat as he rushed forward. He recognized the boy as one he’d been mentoring recently. The boy clutched his ankle, pain etched on his face. Drawing on his own experience, Jason knelt down, gently assessing the injury. “Take it easy,” he reassured the boy, sharing some first-aid tips he’d learned. He stayed by the boy’s side until the medical staff arrived, offering comforting words and sharing his own story of recovery. The boy listened, eyes wide with a mix of pain and hope.
As soon as the match was over, the boy came to find Jason. He hobbled over, a determined look on his face. “Jason, I want to thank you,” the boy said earnestly. “Your words and your example have given me strength. I won’t let this injury stop me from playing basketball.” Jason smiled, feeling a surge of pride. He knew exactly how the boy felt. “That’s the spirit,” he replied. “Remember, setbacks are just opportunities to come back stronger.” Together, they watched the sunset over the court, both filled with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared love for the game.
