Summer is fast approaching-it starts in December in Brazil-and Gomes da Silva is
worried about the heatwaves.
"I'm lucky that my house is on a corner that usually gets a lot of wind,"Silva said."But
even with all the doors and windows open,I still have to keep my fan on nonstop.
It was during that unseasonably hot month that he ran across Luis Cassiano, who was
then explaining to a group of residents at the city square how a special type of garden grown
on rooftops could help cool their homes.
"Unlike the traditional green roof,we just use bidim and vinyl sheets as waterproof
materials. They are lightweight and no soil is needed for the plant to grow,"Cassiano told the
audience."And it costs just $1 per square foot.A conventional green roof can cost as much
as $11 for the same amount of space.
Growing plants on rooftops had been around for thousands of years, and it was greatly
improved in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s.Green roofs aren't uncommon in affluent

districts in Brazil. But in its low-income neighborhoods, the high costs and heavy weight mean
that it isn't even considered a possibility.
To make the green roof both safe and affordable for the poor,Cassiano teamed up with a
civil engineer and launched the nonprofit,Teto Verde Favela.Over the next 10 years, green
roofs started popping up around the low-income communities,on everything from homes and
day care centers to bus stops and food trucks.
When Silva heard the story of Teto Verde Favela,he decided then and there that he
wanted his home to be the group's next project, not just to cool his own home, but to spread
the word to his neighbors about how the new green roof could benefit their community,
Parque Arard,and others like it.

Language scientists have long realized that the rules of the past tense in English change
over time. For example,in the Old English, only about 75%of the verbs took the suffix"-ed"in
their past tense..Sitting alongside these regular verbs like“talked”,“typed”or“played”were
irregular ones that followed more ancient rules(like "sang/sung"or "drank/drunk")or no
rules at all(like“went”and“had”).
数
But over the centuries, the irregular verbs have become fewer and fewer.Today, less
than 3%0 of verbs are irregular and they are usually the most commonly used ones(like "be,
棉
have,do,go,say,can,will,see,take"and "get").
"They are almost immune to regularization,"said Erez Lieberman, whose team have
相
mathematically analyzed how the rules of past tense in English changed and how they will
evolve in the future."To get by,speakers have to use common verbs correctly.Less frequently
used irregular verbs, however, are less readily learned and more easily forgotten, and their
misuse is less likely to be corrected. That creates a situation where versions that follow the
regular‘-ed'rule can start taking over..”
Erez Lieberman and his team examined the progress of 177 irregular verbs from the
9th-century Old English of Beowulf to the 21st-century English of Harry Potter. They found
that only 98 of these are still irregular today, and that many formerly irregular verbs such as
“laugh”and“help”have adopted the suffix“-ed".
"We have found that if they are used 100 times less frequently, they will regularize 10
times as fast, and if they are used 1,000 times less frequently, they will regularize 100 times
as fast,”Erez added.“For example,the two most common irregulars--‘be'and‘have'
appear once or more in every ten words. They were effectively immune to regularization and
are unlikely to change.Less common verbs like'dive'and'tread'only turn up once in every
10,000-100,000 words. We think they are very likely to be regularized in the near future.

In 2018,Nicholas Christakis and his colleagues at Yale University set out to study why
people love the"like"button on the social media so much. They asked 58 young people, aged
13 to 19,to go through their social media account and select several photos they had posted
recently. Each participant then had the chance to view the photos chosen by the whole group,
using a device designed like WeChat, including the "like"button. They did so while lying in
an MRI machine, which allowed the researchers to see if the brain lit up when they hit the
“like”button一and if so,what led to it..
The MRI scan showed activities in different parts of the brain when the participants saw
their own photos with "likes".More strikingly, the researchers also found that viewing
photos with more(compared with fewer)"likes"was associated with greater activity in regions
involved in reward processing, social recognition, imitation ()and attention. In other
words, they didn't just like to receive "likes"but also liked things more when other people
had already“liked'”them.
Why do we like the“likes'”so much?According to Nicholas,.it is because the“1like”
button is built biologically in us."All animals learn as they interact with a challenging world,
from experience gained through trial and error. But only certain animals have the ability to
learn from the experience of other individuals,"explained Nicholas."Such kind of social
learning allows those animals to raise their chances of survival by avoiding the mistakes they
saw others making, and following the successful moves."
This also helps explain why we prefer to stay with people we recognize as similar to
ourselves.Although this tendency can lead to prejudice,it is also connected to our powerful
advantage of social learning. When we observe others who are similar to us,we have higher
confidence that their experiences may be beneficial to our own journey through life.
32.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.The design of an old experiment.
B.The functions of a beloved button.
C.The explanation of a phenomenon.
D.An odd behavior among teenagers.
33.In their study, the scientists found that
A.activities usually occurred in one part of the brain
B.photos with more "likes"led to greater mental activity
C.the "like"button worked differently from other rewards
D.participants disliked photos already "liked"by other people

34.According to Nicholas, why do we prefer to make friends with like minds?
A.To avoid unnecessary conflicts.
B.To share their stories and hobbies.
C.To face their challenges together.
D.To increase the chances of success.
35.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To call for the removal of the“like”button,
B.To show the effects of social media addiction.
C.To report what is found about the "like"button.
D.To tell the powerful advantage of social learning.

When you have social anxiety, you may feel that nothing you say is smart or funny
enough at any large gathering. Here are some strategies that can help you feel less ill at ease.
36
Before showing up at any important networking event, try making conversations with
neighbors,co-workers or waiters.There isn't necessarily a goal of having a deeply meaningful
conversation.37.Over time, you'll gain a sense of comfort and confidence as you venture
into larger gatherings.
Prepare some conversation starters
That way, you'll have something in your back pocket to continue the conversation. Here
are two of the most frequently used ones:38.If you're a food lover, find out whether
your conversation partner has tried any great new restaurants.
Find an anchor(锚)
Holding a cold drink or simply pressing your feet into the floor can give your nervous
system something to anchor to when you're feeling anxious.39.
Have some exit strategies ready
The good news about social events is that they all eventually end-and your departure can
arrive as soon as you'd like. You might feel better if you let your friends know from the start
that you will be able to stay only until a certain time,or make it clear that you have an
afternoon appointment that will keep brunch from turning into dinner.40.For example:
"It was really nice talking to you,but I'm going to check in with Jane."
A.Practice in safe settings
B.Encourage the other person to keep sharing
C.Just keep trying to talk to build up your confidence
D.Research suggests such anchors can help signal to your brain:"I'm safe.
