All humans call this planet home, and it’s unique to us. So we must take good care of it, keeping it clean and safe. We also have duty to protect all living things on it, like people, plants and animals. But people are harming our planet and its creatures(生物). A serious problem is a great deal of plastic waste. Each year, humans use as much plastic as 30 million elephants weigh. By 2050, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
首页
首页
Plastic is inexpensive and widely used in our daily life. People just throw it away everywhere after using it. When the plastic ends up in oceans, rivers, beaches and the countryside, it is greatly harmful to our planet. The plastic is so strong that it takes hundreds of years before it rots away(腐烂) and disappears. According to a survey, lots of plastic ends up in oceans. Fish and other creatures are easy to get stuck in plastic or they may eat it by mistake. What’s worse, over 100,000 fish lose their lives because of the plastic pollution every year.
首页
Luckily, there are lots of things we can do to help end plastic pollution.
◆Reuse a water bottle instead of buying a new one.
◆Don’t use plastic straws for drinks.
◆Use fabric(布料) bags instead of plastic bags when shopping.
◆Call on more people around you not to buy things that are made of plastic.

In 2019, a white-haired senior was awarded the Friendship Medal, the highest order of honor of China for foreigners. It was Isabel Crook. In her over a century of life, she spent more than 90 years in China and educated a large number of foreign language students for China.
In 1915, Isabel was born to a Canadian family in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1938, Isabel couldn’t wait to return to China. Since there were no tape recorders at school, she had to perform the conversation again and again.

Saturn(土星) is famous for the beautiful rings around it. Now, it’s getting attention for being even more amazing. Scientists have discovered 128 new moons around Saturn, bringing the planet’s total to 274. A moon is any naturally formed object that moves around a planet. Moons come in different shapes and sizes.
Scientists discovered the moons with a powerful telescope(望远镜), which is used to study stars and planets in great detail. Scientists took many photos of areas in space and piled them on top of each other to make the moons appear bright enough to discover.
首页
Most of Saturn’s new moons are small objects, just one or two miles wide—quite different to Earth’s Moon, which is a 2,159-mile-wide ball. These space rocks are in unusual orbits(轨道) too. They go around Saturn in the opposite direction to its own movement. At between 6.5 million and 18 million miles away from the ringed planet, the newly discovered moons are also further away than Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan.
Why does Saturn have so many moons while Earth only has one? According to scientists, several billion years ago, the giant planet’s gravity attracted some rocks and ice. Over time, some of them crashed against each other, breaking into smaller pieces or coming together to create many small moons.
首页
The new moons were first discovered in 2023 by a team of scientists led by Edward Ashton, and were recently confirmed by the International Astronomical Union(IAU). Saturn now is the planet with the most moons—Jupiter is not far behind with 95. However, Dr Ashton believes this might be the limit for moon discovery. “I don’t think Jupiter will ever catch up,” he said. “With present technology, I don’t think we can do better than what has already been done,” he added.
首页
( )9. What do we know about the new discovery?
A. Newly found moons look the same.
B. Scientists found new moons by accident.
C. Saturn’s rings attract many scientists.
D. 128 new moons were found around Saturn.
( )10. What does “the ringed planet” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

Stories about Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) date back to 5,000 years ago, when Shen Nong tasted different plants to see which could be used as medicine. The official history of TCM began around 2,500 years ago with The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon(《黄帝内经》), the first book about its practices.
Nowadays, the old saying “good medicine tastes bitter” may no longer be true in China. Feeling tired, a 20-year-old college student named Xi Linjie went to a Traditional Chinese Medicine hospital in Chongqing. To her surprise, she got a cup of sweet milk tea instead of medicine. The tea was both delicious and healthy.
首页
This special milk tea is made by the hospital’s nutrition(营养) team. They mix old Chinese medicine with modern food. “Milk tea is popular among young people. We hope it can be a bridge for them to increase knowledge of TCM and to accept TCM,” said Liao Changying, the director of the team. She noted that almost every person who had tried the milk tea shared the special experience with their family and friends.
In Chongqing, there is also a TCM night market, which is held every weekend. People can get free health service there. A man said, “I never realized TCM could be so close to our daily lives.” Over half of the visitors are young people who come to ask for professional advice. It shows that the younger ones are more and more confident in TCM nowadays.

Grades tell schools how much students have learned and they are pretty important. The problem is that you do not always get the good grades you (or your parents) want. After a bad report card, the important thing is to think about your next steps.
首页
The first thing to do is talk to your teacher. Find out how you got your grades. Was the problem a bad test, not joining in class, or not doing homework? If the problem is something you can solve on your own (like not doing your homework), make a promise to improve your actions. However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some more help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can get the help you need. Then, make a plan for how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. This can help make your parents less angry.
Always remember, many of the world’s most successful people made many mistakes before they became successful. They learned from their mistakes, and you should, too!
