①Do you like traveling? Do you like studying? Do you prefer to put these two things together? Nowadays, academic field trip(研学), which is a new form of education while traveling, is getting more popular in middle schools. Recently, a special field trip has taken place in Guyuan, Ningxia.
②On April 3rd, one day before Qingming Festival, 1,600 students began a special journey—a 54-kilometer round-trip hike to honor heroes. At 4:50 a.m., under dark skies, students from No. 2 Middle School of Guyuan and Hongwen Middle School set out for Renshanhe Martyrs Cemetery(烈士陵园), which honors soldiers who died in the 1949 Renshanhe Battle.
首页
③To fully prepare this activity, these students had a hard training, including daily runs and morning exercises. During the whole trip, they had to face many difficulties such as leg pain and tiredness, but almost every one of them finished it. When they finally reached the cemetery, they cleaned the tombstone(墓碑) carefully and laid flowers with respect.
④This 30-year tradition, mixing physical challenge with patriotic(爱国主义的) education, has much meaning to both the local school life and the tourist industry.
首页
⑤The tradition began in 1995, when the headmaster, Han Hong, held this event to let students realize the importance of health. In its first year, Liu Yinjuan, now an English teacher, used to join as a student. “We wore cloth shoes, shared dry bread, and cried for both pain and pride,” she recalled her first experience.
⑥In fact, many parents doubted this event because of safety problems at first. However, as time goes by, the team spirits and strong willingness of these kids have moved them. Besides, no accidents ever happened with the teachers’ help and the students’ effort. Now it wins strong support from both the community and the whole country.
首页
⑦The event’s meaning has reached far beyond the classroom. There used to be few people visiting Renshanhe Martyrs Cemetery in the past. Since the activity started, not only has the journey taught many students a valuable lesson, but it has also brought more than 50,000 visitors for this place each year.

Most of you have had this experience. When you are doing something, you forget the time, and everything around you—like ringing phones or people passing by—also seems to go away because you lose yourself in it.
This special state of mind is called “flow”(心流). The idea of flow was introduced and first studied by psychologist(心理学家) Mihaly. According to his discovery, if the task is challenging and people believe they have enough skills, flow will happen.
首页
What advantages does flow bring? Artists said that they could create more works easily without putting in much effort in the flow state. It can also offer people greater levels of happiness and satisfaction. Flow often happens during creative activities and sports activities. But it isn’t just something experienced by artists, writers or sports persons. Flow can happen when a person is deeply lost in a task, such as working hard to finish a physics test, practicing English dialogues again and again, or even solving a difficult math problem.
首页
Many people want to get into a flow state more often in daily life. To make this happen, you can try to make a clear plan for your task, like deciding “I’ll finish three math exercises in 30 minutes” before you start. Second, if you’re good at English, try writing a short story with 5 new words instead of just copying sentences. What’s more, ask your teacher or classmates for feedback after finishing, such as “Is this physics problem solved the right way?” and fix your mistakes quickly.
