One story suggests that it changed from the 25-stringed instrument called the se(瑟). According to the story, a se master had two talented daughters who loved playing the instrument. One part had 12 strings and the other had 13 strings. To his surprise, the new instrument had a soft and beautiful sound, and he named it zheng.
