Trusting the advice, Santiago sells his sheep and goes to Africa by ship. On the way, he meets new friends and faces many challenges.
Sadly, a thief cheats him in a crowded market in Morocco and steals all his money. He feels very upset. So Santiago has to find work at a crystal(水晶) shop. The owner, a quiet man with tired eyes, warns him that “Dreams

make people forget real life.” But Santiago notices the shop’s problems: beautiful cups are hidden inside, and no customers stop by. He has an idea, “How about offering free tea to people and placing the cups outside so that people can see them?” Though the owner doubts this at first, the idea works! More people come, sales grow, and Santiago even advises the owner to sell cups as a symbol of good luck to mountain climbers.
When Santiago plans to leave, the shop owner tells him that he once dreamed of traveling the world to find special crystals. ▲ “Now the shop is my whole world. I’m too old to travel now, ” the shop owner says with regret. “But I wish I had followed my dream when I was young.” Santiago realizes that waiting too long can kill dreams.

After saving enough money, Santiago joins a group of travelers crossing the Sahara. During the journey, he meets an Englishman. ①Have you ever been burned by a freshly made molten custard bun(流沙包)? Many people say when the soft skin of molten custard bun feels cool enough to eat, the filling(馅) inside is still “burning hot”.
② ▲ They were surprised to find that the average temperature of the filling can reach 64℃ when the buns are taken out of the steamer. According to scientists, the suggested temperature for food is around 10℃ to 40℃, and food that is over 60℃ can hurt our throat.
首页
③Why does this happen? The secret is in its filling. It isn’t just liquid(液体)—it’s a thick mix of sugar, milk, and egg yolks, which flows(流动) slowly. Because it is not exposed(暴露) to air, once heated, the thick filling keeps heat for a long time. The test shows that after a bun has been out of the steamer for 10 minutes, the temperature inside still remains 58.3℃. Even after 20 minutes, the center still stays warm.
④The temperature difference can be explained using a physics concept called specific heat capacity(比热容). Something with a low specific heat capacity doesn’t hold much heat and cools down fast. Things with a high
首页
specific heat capacity take longer to cool down. Usually, liquids hold heat longer than solids(固体). As a molten custard bun’s filling has more water and fat than its skin, it takes more time to fully cool down.
⑤To avoid being burned, it is advised that when serving such hot food, shops can add warning tips like a simple “Caution: Filling is very hot!” sign to remind people. Providing small spoons to allow customers to check the temperature before eating also helps. A little care prevents accidents and makes dining more enjoyable.
首页
⑥For customers, next time you buy a hot bun, let it sit for at least 15 minutes. You can make a small hole on the skin with your chopstick first, letting the filling cool faster.
⑦Now you know why molten custard buns stay hot inside. Remember: the skin may lie, but the science doesn’t. Stay patient and stay safe. Your tongue will thank you for waiting!

Are you afraid of speaking in front of the class? You’re not alone! Many students feel this way at first. The good news is that public speaking is a skill you can learn. How can we improve the skill?
Getting ready is the most important part. First of all, choose something you know well as a topic. It might be your favorite hobby or a fun family trip. Then talk about it every day. It’s better to write down 2—3 main ideas on

note cards and practice saying them aloud in different ways:in front of a mirror, to your pet, or to your family. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
Even when you’re ready for your speaking, you might still feel nervous. That’s very normal. Here’s an easy way you can try:before you start talking, press your hands together lightly and count “1-2-3-4-5”in your head, making each number last about one second. Then let your hands relax. Do this for 3 times. Believe me, it really works.
首页
When it’s time to speak, look for friendly faces in the room. Find those who are smiling and nodding at you, because they want you to do well. You can look into their eyes, focus on their kind faces and speak to them like you’re telling a story to friends. That will help you feel more confident(自信的).
So, next time when it’s your turn to speak, just have a try. Believe me if you keep trying and never give up, success will come to you.
