Enjoy the benefits of stress
Are you looking forward to another busy week? You should be according to some experts. They argue that the stress encountered in our daily lives is not only good for us, ____31____ essential to survival. They say that the response to stress, which creates a chemical called adrenalin (肾上腺素), helps the mind and body to act quickly upon emergencies. Animals and human beings use it ____32____ (meet) the bad conditions that exist on the planet.
____33____ nobody denies the pressures of everyday life, we haven’t developed successful ways of dealing with them. But the experts consider the current tactics (方法) to be inadequate and often dangerous. They believe that ____34____ trying to manage our response to stress with drugs or relaxation techniques, we must exploit it. Clearly, research shows that people who create conditions of stress for ____35____ by doing exciting and risky sports, cope much better with life’s problems. So far, activities of this type ____36____ (show) to create a lot of emotion; people may actually cry or feel extremely uncomfortable. But there is a moment ____37____ they realize they have succeeded and know that it was a positive experience. This is because people learn through challenge and difficulty, and that’s ____38____ we get our wisdom. Unfortunately, few of us understand it. For example, many people believe they suffer from stress at work, and take time off as a result. Yet it has been found in some companies that by far ____39____ (healthy) people are those with the most responsibility. So next time you’re in a stressful situation, remember that it will be a positive learning experience and ____40____ stress in itself does benefit your health!
Section C (10%)

Relationship in the Digital Age
"People from our past whom we no longer directly communicate with but who are active on social networks can "occupy ____41____ space in your mind, and you think about them instead of about your close friends,” said Carlin Flora, the author of "Friendfluence: The Surprising Ways Friends Make Us Who We are.”
"If my high school friend posts frequently about her life, it's almost like it's celebrity gossip (八卦新闻), or it seems as if I am watching a ____42____ show about her,” Ms. Flora said. "Our brains get ____43____ about whether we know celebrities; if we see someone a lot, our brain thinks we know them.”
Ms. Schiller, the Iowa graduate, goes out often with friends at night but also lives on a digital diet of texting (____44____ enough that she recently hurt her thumb), Google chat and social media. As with many young people, talking on the phone was never a big part of her routine and is now saved for the ____45____of occasions.
There are physiological benefits to face-to-face ____46____ that don't belong to digital interactions or the phone. "Your blood pressure goes down, and you imitate your friend's gesture ____47____ ,” Ms. Flora said. "It's a kind of harmony humans have developed over thousands of years, and you don't get that when you only follow someone on social media.”
But now thanks to smartphones, it's ____48____ for this synchrony (同步性) to be disrupted in person. Imagine Edward Hopper's 1942 painting "Nighthawks” (below) recomposed today, with the three late-night diners and counterman (柜台服务员) all gazing at ____49____. "If there's a bunch of guys at a bar together and they're all on their phones,” Ms. Flora said, "they're not doing much to stimulate the body system to create the sense of _____50_____”.
III. Reading Comprehension ( 37.5 %)
Section A ( 15%)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Are we too slow to praise and quick to blame? It seems we are.
Praise is like sunlight to the human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. And yet, we are somehow ____51____ to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. To make matters worse, most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of ____52____.
It’s strange how chary (吝啬的) we are about praising. Perhaps it’s because few of us know how to accept compliments gracefully. ____53____, we are embarrassed and shrug off (不予理睬) the words we are really so glad to hear. Because of this ____54____ reaction, direct compliments are surprisingly difficult to give. That is why some of the most valued pats on the back are those which come to us ____55____, in a letter or passed on by a friend. When one thinks of the speed with which spiteful (恶意的) remarks are conveyed, it seems a pity that there isn’t more effort to pass ____56____ comments.
It’s especially rewarding to give praise in areas where effort generally goes unnoticed or ____57____. An artist gets complimented for a glorious picture, a cook for a perfect meal. But do you ever tell your ____58____ manager how pleased you are when the shirts are done just right?
Praise is particularly appreciated by those doing ____59____ jobs: gas-station attendants, waitresses — even housewives. Do you ever go into a house and say, “What a tidy room”? Hardly anybody does. Shakespeare said, “Our praises are our wages.” Since so often praise is the only ____60____ a housewife receives, surely she of all people should get her measure.
Teachers agree about the value of praise. One teacher writes that instead of drowning students’ compositions in critical red ink, the teacher will get far more ____61____ results by finding one or two things which have been done better than last time, and commenting ____62____on them. “I believe that a student knows when he has handed in something above his usual standard,” writes the teacher, “and that he waits hungrily for a brief comment in the margin (空白处) to show him that the teacher is aware of it, too.”
To give praise ____63____ the giver nothing but a moment’s thought and a moment’s effort. It is such a small ____64____. And yet consider the results it may produce. “I can live for two months on a good compliment,” said Mark Twain. So, let’s be ____65____ to the small excellences around us — and comment on them. We will not only bring joy into other people’s lives, but also, very often, add happiness into our own.

Section B ( 22.5%)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Have you ever had the experience of talking to someone and you think they are lying? Well, you are not alone. We’ve all had that feeling. But did you know that there are several things you can look for to see if you are being lied to?
Sometimes you can tell if a person is lying by observing what they do with their body. When people are lying they tend not to move their arms, hands or legs very far form their body. They don’t want to take up very much space because they don’t want to be noticed. Sometimes a person who is lying will not look you in the eyes. Other times people who lie try to look at you in a strong way because they want to convince you they are telling the truth.
Liars also use deflection. For example, if you ask a liar the question“did you steal Fatima’s bag?”,they may answer with something like“Fatima is my friend, why would I do that?”in this situation the person is telling the truth, but they are also not answering the question. They are trying to deflect your attention. Liars may also give too many details. They may try to over-explain things. They do this because they want to convince you of what they are saying.
Often when a person is lying, they do not want to continue talking about their lie. If you think someone is lying, quickly change the subject. If the person is lying, they will appear more comfortable because they are not talking about their lie any longer. A little later, change the subject back to what you were talking about before. If the person seems uncomfortable again, they may be lying.
It’s very hard for a liar to avoid filling silence created by you. He or she wants you to believe the lies being woven; silence gives no feedback on whether or not you’ve bought the story. If you’re a good listener, you’ll already be avoiding interruptions, which in itself is a great technique to let the story unfold.
Just because a person is showing these behaviors, it doesn’t mean they are lying. They might be shy or nervous. But if you think someone is lying, you might want to use some of these techniques. Hopefully, you won’t need to very often.
66. By saying“Liars also use deflection.”,the writer means that liars may ______.
A. tell great stories B. change tone of voice
C. ask a question in reply D. avoid direct answers
67. According to the passage, a person could be lying if he or she ___.
A. offers more information than necessary
B. appears to be shy or nervous
C. changes the subject of the conversation
D. speaks very fast and vaguely
68. Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A. liars always try to avoid direct eye contact when they tell lies
B we can make people lie by changing the subject in a conversation
C. liars are often expansive in hand and arm movements while talking
D. we make liars uncomfortable by giving no feedback in a conversation
69. The passage mainly talks about ____.
A. who deceives us B. why people tell lies
C. how to detect lies D. what to do with liars

(C)
For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. “While we teach, we learn,” said the Roman philosopher Seneca. Now scientists are bringing this ancient wisdom up-to-date, documenting exactly why teaching is such a fruitful way to learn, and designing innovative ways for young people to engage in instruction.
Researchers have found that students who sign up to tutor others work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. Student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who are learning only for their own sake. But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others? One answer: They can tutor younger kids. Some studies have concluded that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born siblings (兄弟姐妹) and suggested that their higher IQs result from the time they spend teaching their younger siblings. Educators are experimenting with ways to apply this model to academic subjects. They engage college undergraduates to teach computer science to high school students, who in turn instruct middle school students on the topic.
But the most cutting-edge tool under development is the “teachable agent” — a computerized character who learns, tries, makes mistakes and asks questions just like a real-world pupil. Engineers and computer scientists have created an animated figure called Betty’s Brain, who has been “taught” about environmental science by hundreds of middle school students. Student teachers are motivated to help Betty master certain materials. While preparing to teach, they organize their knowledge and improve their own understanding. And as they explain the information to her, they identify problems in their own thinking.
Feedback from the teachable agents further enhances the tutors’ learning. The agent’s questions compel (促使) users to think and explain the materials in different ways, and watching the agent solve problems allows them to see their knowledge put into action.
Above all, it’s the emotions one experiences in teaching that facilitate learning. Student tutors feel upset when their virtual pupils fail, but happy when these virtual pupils succeed as they derive pride and satisfaction from someone else’s accomplishment.
73. What are researchers rediscovering through their study?
A. Seneca’s thinking is still applicable today.
B. Philosophical thinking improves instruction.
C. Human intelligence tends to grow with age.
D. Better learners will become better teachers.
74. What is Betty’s Brain in Paragraph Three?
A. A character in a popular animation. B. A teaching tool being developed.
C. A tutor for computer science students. D. A cutting-edge app in digital games.
75. What do students do to teach their teachable agents?
A. They encourage them to give accurate feedback.
B. They motivate them to think independently.
C. They ask them to design their own questions.
D. They use various ways to explain the materials.
76. What is the passage mainly talking about?
A. Advantages in teaching.
B. Teaching bringing ancient wisdom up-to-date.
C. Why teaching someone else is the best way to learn.
D. Why teaching younger kids benefits one’s learning.
Section C

Life on a Ship
We three children were very excited when we walked up the gangway (舷梯) of the British ship and saw officers, crew and staff rushing around. A Chinese housekeeper led the way and helped Uncle Jean and Aunt Reine with our luggage. Victor, Claudine and I lagged behind. The housekeeper was tall and thin and towered over everyone. ____77____ As we followed him down a narrow corridor (过道) towards our cabins, Victor whispered to me, “One thing about having no hair at all on your head, you always look neat!”
Though I was still feeling nervous because it had only been three days since Aunt Reine took me out of St. Joseph’s, I laughed out loud. That was the effect Victor had on people. ____78____ “Boys to the right and girls to the left,” said Uncle Jean. Our two cabins were directly opposite each other. Inside, everything was neat and clean. While Aunt Reine, Claudine and I were unpacking, there was a knock on the door.
Victor stood there, wearing a bright-red and orange life-jacket. “Why are you wearing that?” Claudine protested. “Our ship hasn’t even sailed yet!” “In case the China Star starts going down. Then you’ll really be sorry you’re not wearing one yourself. Here! Let me show you something!” ____79____ Our cabin was below deck. Outside we could see nothing but deep dark water.
____80____ Before Aunt Reine had time to reply, Victor quipped with a straight face, “Only once!” Aunt Reine and I could not help laughing in spite of ourselves. In our cabin, there were only two narrow twin beds, each covered with dark blue sheets. At night, our housekeeper brought in a tiny roll-out bed (折叠床) because there were three of us.
A. Once Victor hid in a lifeboat for half an hour while we searched everywhere.
B. His head was completely hairless, and he was obviously unsteady (摇晃的).
C. He and Claudine made me feel at ease as soon as I met them.
D. Claudine became alarmed suddenly. “Mama, how often does a ship sink? ”
E. He parted the curtain and looked out of the round window of the ship.
F. He jumped out as we passed below him, scaring and delighting us at the same time.

【原文】 On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will pay back invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I’m sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you’re willing to work hard.
Questions:
1. Whom is the speech aimed at?
2. Why does the speaker give the speech?
3. Which of the following is NOT a tip the speaker shares?

C. It can make people’s hearts stronger.
D. It prevents people suffering from cancers.
【答案】14. A 15. D 16. D
【解析】
【原文】Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot … you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more! Walking is a basic, simple exercise that’s suitable for almost everyone.
Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.
Questions:
1. What’s the topic of the passage?
2. Why is walking good for people’s mental health?
3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about walking in the passage?

W: Well, did you get the information you needed?
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have lot of more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.

W: Well I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read through what I got on the Internet and start working on my subjects.

M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.
