And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious. Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”. When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought. In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me. I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully. During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.” 4. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”? A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it. B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning. C. She understood the intention but still disliked it. D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed. 5. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______. A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community 6. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______. A. reflects the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy C. highlights the design of strokes D. depends on continuous practice 7. What does the author intend to tell us? A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self. C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. Fortunately, no damage was reported. However, the earthquake was important in another aspect — many people in the area received warnings on their mobile phones just before the earthquake hit. Furthermore, several of these phones aided in detecting (检测) the earthquake in the first place. Some smartphone companies have been developing a warning system that can remind users a few seconds before an earthquake hits. Although a few seconds may not seem like much, it can provide enough time to take cover under a table or desk, slow down trains, and prevent planes from taking off or landing. This system is expected to save lives during stronger quakes. It relies on information from two sources: a network of several seismometers (地震仪) placed across the states, and the world’s largest earthquake detection network created through smartphones owned by the public. The mobile earthquake detecting and warning network uses built-in sensors (传感器) on mobile phones to replace traditional detection instruments. The system can work out whether an earthquake is happening and where. It can then send a warning to phones in the area where the earthquakes are likely to hit. Radio signals travel faster than earthquake waves, allowing warnings to be sent before the shaking. This technology opens up the possibility of detecting the earthquakes in regions where widespread networks of costly seismometers cannot be used, and could provide earthquake warnings in even poorer places of the world. The earthquake warning system has some limitations (限制), particularly in regions with low phone usage and in earthquakes that happen near the ocean, which can cause tsunamis (海啸). Additionally, while the system can provide a few seconds of advance warning, detecting earthquakes remains challenging. Still, there are hopes to expand the system’s usage worldwide in the future as long as we want to make a change in its limitations. 8. Why was the warning system invented? A. To reduce the economic loss of earthquakes. B. To buy more survival time for people. C. To raise people’s self-protection awareness. D. To figure out earthquakes’ location. 9. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. Where the system is used. B. How the system works. C. When the system will operate. D. What the system aims for. 10. What is special about the system? A. It can be used in wider areas. B. It gives warnings days in advance. C. It uses the Internet to send signals. D. It shares information recorded by users. 11. What will the scientists do to the system next? A. Add the latest data to it. B. Shorten its warning time. C. Keep working on its problems. D. Put it into computers instead of phones. 【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Although a few seconds may not seem like much, it can provide enough time to take cover under a table or desk, slow down trains, and prevent planes from taking off or landing. This system is expected to save lives during stronger quakes. 根据第三段“The mobile earthquake detecting and warning network uses built-in sensors (传感器) on mobile phones to replace traditional detection instruments. The system can work out whether an earthquake is happening and where. It can then send a warning to phones in the area where the earthquakes are likely to hit. 根据第四段“This technology opens up the possibility of detecting the earthquakes in regions where widespread networks of costly seismometers cannot be used, and could provide earthquake warnings in even poorer places of the world. (这项技术使在无法部署昂贵地震仪网络的地区检测地震成为可能,甚至能为全球更贫困地区提供地震预警)”可知,该系统的特别之处在于可在更广泛的区域使用。故选A项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Still, there are hopes to expand the system’s usage worldwide in the future as long as we want to make a change in its limitations. (不过,只要我们愿意改进其局限性,未来仍有望在全球推广该系统的使用)”可推知,科学家接下来会继续解决系统存在的问题。故选C项。 D Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is a decisive factor. British philosopher Bertrand Russell even claimed in 1948 that no intelligent thinking can take place without language. However, a recent study in Nature suggests otherwise. It found that language and thought are two distinct entities, working in separate parts of the brain. They are, in short, “far more independent than we imagined”, wrote ZME Science. The study, conducted by scientists from the US, explored the language-thought relationship through two research approaches. First, they studied patients suffering from global aphasia, who had lost much of their ability to understand or speak due to damage to the left hemisphere of their brain. However, they can still complete complex tasks. “You can ask people with global aphasia to solve math problems or perform social reasoning tests, and as long as the instructions are non-verbal, they can succeed,” Evelina Fedorenko, one of the study’s authors from the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told ZME Science. The researchers also used brain-imaging tools to study the brains of healthy volunteers as they performed non-verbal tasks, like solving puzzles and planning. It was found that the brain’s language regions were mostly inactive during such activities. In other words, we generally need language to express our thoughts but we can still think without words. So, if language isn’t necessary for thinking, then why did humans develop it? Fedorenko said language serves mainly as a tool for communication. “Most of the things that you probably learned about the world, you learned through language and not through direct experience with the world,” she said. By being able to share complex information through language, humans gained an evolutionary advantage. Although language does not give rise to thoughts, past research shows that how we speak can heavily influence how we think. For example, the English sentence “he fired the gun” is usually phrased as “the gun went off” in Japanese. As a result, English speakers are more likely to focus on the person responsible for an accident than Japanese speakers, according to Psychology Today. 12. What is the main purpose of the study mentioned in the passage? A. To prove that language is essential for intelligent thinking. B. To examine the relationship between language and thought. C. To develop new treatments for patients with global aphasia. D. To identify the brain regions responsible for non-verbal reasoning. 13 What did brain-imaging tools reveal about healthy volunteers performing non-verbal task? A. They struggled with problem-solving. B. Their language centers became overactive. C. Their language regions showed little activity. D. They would unconsciously use verbal strategies. 14. How can language serve humans, according to Fedorenko? A. It helps humans generate thoughts. B. It decides humans’ evolutionary direction. C. It replaces direct experience with the world. D. It facilitates the exchange of complicated ideas. 15. What is the main idea of the text? A. Thought can operate independently from language. B. Language plays a decisive role in shaping human thought. C. Language and thought are deeply interdependent in the brain. D. The absence of language makes complex thought impossible. 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第一段中的“However, a recent study in Nature suggests otherwise. That pre-test day came soon. The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side, Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern. Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said. Sadie, his teammate, patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down. “You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said, Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles (护目镜) over his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water. Sadie glared at the boy, “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏), and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy. Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you use your arms or legs?” Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. “I can’t swim. B At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. C A recent earthquake happened in California. D Many think that language is what sets humans apart from other animals, and that for us to think, language is a decisive factor. 12. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water.” Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don’t worry, I will teach you how to swim.
