They brought with them their version of French. Middle Ages Middle English Norman French became the language of government, but ordinary people continued to speak Old English. However, the grammar and vocabulary soon changed because of the influence of the Vikings and the Normans. Old English gradually turned into Middle English. 1400–1600 In the late Middle Ages, the language we know today began to appear. During this time, the spelling and pronunciation of many words changed a lot. By the time William Shakespeare wrote his plays, the language looked completely different from Middle English. 1800– With the Industrial Revolution, the British started trading all over the world and made English a global language.
