A
We all know it’s polite to follow local customs when we’re in a new place. So when you have Western food with others, it’s good to do as Western people do. Here are some things that you may need to know about eating together in the West.
During the meal, you may be invited to serve yourself by someone who says, “Help yourself.” Or you will be served by someone who asks, “Would you like some...?” You can take it and say, “Thank you.” If you are given something you do not like, you can just say, for example, “I’m sorry. I don’t eat meat.” or “I don’t eat fish.” Don’t worry. No one will be cross. If you are offered more food but can’t eat any more, just say, “No, thanks. It was delicious, but I’ve had enough.”
Remember that it is polite to say that you enjoy every dish when it is served, and that you have enjoyed the food at the end of a meal.
It is sometimes difficult to know when the meal is over. If you are invited to dinner by Western friends, you will be expected to stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish is served, and it is not polite if you leave as soon as you finish eating.
The rule is: Watch the other people. Do as they do.
31.What does the underlined word “cross” probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Angry. B.Serious. C.Shy. D.Satisfied.
32.Which behaviour is polite while eating in the West?
A.Saying you enjoy every dish. B.Leaving as soon as you finish eating. C.Keeping silent after the last dish. D.Watching others eat all the time.
33.Who may the text be written for?
A.Romans. B.Westerners. C.Chinese. D.Americans.
34.How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ...)
A.B.C. D.
35.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To introduce Western dishes. B.To explain the importance of table manners.
C.To provide tips on polite behaviour at Western meals. D.To compare Eastern and Western eating habits.

England is very close to France. 36 When an English person is traveling in France, he or she needs to follow its special culture.
Never refuse. You should never refuse an invitation to a social event or any kind of offer, even if you don’t like it. Maybe it is strange for you. 37
38 As an English clerk, you are used to eating your packed lunch quickly before a computer screen in the office. You will surprisingly find French clerks leave their offices to restaurants. They go to have their relaxing meals and a 2-hour break. Maybe you always have supper at 6 p.m., so having to wait until 9 p.m. can be quite a challenge for your stomach but it is certainly worth waiting.
Another thing about French culture of food and drinks is the coffee culture. 39 But you will find French people often have coffee and slices (片) of home-made cake with their old friends in their warm homes. I am sure you will also enjoy the lifestyle.
Greetings. 40 But in France, people greet each other with two kisses on the cheeks when they meet for the first time.
A.France is more romantic.
B.But actually there is no polite way of saying “no” in France.
C.However, there are many cultural differences between them.
D.You’ve got used to drinking coffee quickly at a restaurant.
E.English people shake hands when they meet for the first time.
F.Food and eating time.
五、选词填空

Well, that was good. Martin liked everything to do with magic. He started reading it, 43 he wasn’t very interested. The next morning, his father asked him, “Have you found the magic key?”
“No. I turned the pages of the book quickly, but there was no sign of the key,” Martin replied. His father said, “You won’t find the magic 44 you read the book carefully.”
Martin wasn’t patient (有耐心的) enough, and he stopped reading the book. One day his sister asked him for the book. She wanted to read it. Several days later, 45 the girl finished the book, she happily shouted, “I’ve found it, the key of the magic book!”
So Martin started to read the book again. At first it was a pain. But gradually (逐渐地), Martin got interested in the adventurous (有冒险精神的) prince’s life. Suddenly, he was there. The book itself was the key! Whenever he opened it, he felt he was taken to (被带到) its mountains and seas.

Martin got a book from his father on his birthday. He felt 41 sad that he didn’t talk too much. His father noticed this and said, “Cheer up, Martin! It’s a magic book. 42 you want to find out its magic, you’ll have to read it.”
