Good or bad? A lot of sciencefiction writing imagines a world which is dark and scary. In Blade Runner, Harrison Ford hunts robots in a chaotic (混乱的) Los Angeles. Planet of the Apes shows a hopeless future for humankind. There's a word to describe the kind of future world which often appears in science fiction: dystopia. It means an imagined place where things are unpleasant or bad. The opposite is utopia .But does tomorrow's world have to be so disappointing? No. A new project wants to use the power of science fiction to inspire people to create a better future. Project Hieroglyph brings together writers, scientists, engineers and artists to create optimistic stories about things which really could happen in the next 50 years. It's just a matter of making an effort. Experts say it's easier to create a dystopia than write a feelgood story. There's more conflict in a world full of problems, and stories are interesting when there are a lot of problems to solve. No challenge, no story! But the project produced a book with some promising plots. One of them is about environmentalists who fight to stop entrepreneurs (创业者) from building the first hotel in Antarctica.Well, there's conflict there and it seems reasonable, so it could be a good story. But will these stories actually change anything or just keep us entertained? Ed Finn, the book's editor, thinks the former. He says:“A good sciencefiction story can be very powerful. It can inspire hundreds, thousands, millions of people to do something that they want to do.” The influence of science fiction can already be seen in modern research, says Professor Braden Allenby. He asks:“Why are people working on, for example, invisibility cloaks (斗篷)? Well, it's Harry Potter, right?” Time will tell how far we can go. Let's dream big and think outside the box. Who knows the wonderful things we can come up with? 1.The underlined word“utopia”in Paragraph 2 most probably means“ ______ ”. A.a real world where people can do anything they like B.an imagined place where things are unpleasant or bad C.an imaginary perfect world where everyone is happy D.a wild and terrible place where no one can live happily 2.Experts say it's easier to create a dystopia than a feelgood story because ______ . A.a dystopia needs less imagination B.a feelgood story is more interesting C.there is no conflict in a feelgood story D.there are more problems to solve in a dystopia 3.Professor Braden Allenby takes“invisibility cloaks”as an example ______ . A.to cause readers' attention B.to amuse science fiction readers C.to introduce a science fiction story D.to show the influence of science fiction 4.What is the best title for the passage? A.What is science fiction? B.Can science fiction help us? C.What will man do in the future? D.Shall we live a better life in the future? 根据第二段中的“There's a word to describe the kind of future world which often appears in science fiction:dystopia. It means an imagined place where things are unpleasant or bad. The opposite is utopia.” 根据第四段中的“There's more conflict in a world full of problems, and stories are interesting when there are a lot of problems to solve.” 根据倒数第二段中的“The influence of science fiction can already be seen in modern research, says Professor Braden Allenby. He asks:“Why are people working on, for example, invisibility cloaks (斗篷)? Well, it's Harry Potter, right?”可知,Professor Braden Allenby举例哈利波特的例子来说明科幻对现代人的影响很大,故选D。] 4.B [考查主旨大意。纵观全文可知,本文介绍了科幻对我们生活的影响和作用,故选B。] Ⅱ.阅读七选五 There have been a lot of comments recently surrounding 5G, the next generation of wireless technology. ____1____ ? Never had she been so nervous before. This competition was of vital importance to her comeback.“If I can win today,”she said to herself,“I can dance on the national stage next month.”Three months ago, her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills. “Hi, Mary,”in rushed her friend Jessica.“How is your arm? Is it going to influence your performance?” “I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match,”said Mary with a determined look. “Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real wellmatched competitor. Come on!” After Jessica left,Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin.“If I don't try harder, I won't grasp this chance,”she thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried.“Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?”she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up. A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully. Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said,“Hi, I'm Linda.I am the next one!”Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable.“This is just my competitor. Because of her, I may lose tonight.”Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream,“Oh, God, I can't find my music tape!”Linda searched her bag but in vain.“It may be missing on the way.”With these words, she then rushed out. 注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右; 2.按下列格式作答。 Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster.________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Suddenly, Mary caught sight of a black box under the chair where Linda put her bag. She went over and then opened the box to find Linda's tape was just inside. At that time, she was in a dilemma,“This is my chance to defeat her.”But on second thoughts, she changed her mind,“If I hide it, I will win the competition but I may lose something.”She placed it on the chair carefully, leaving a note saying“Take it easy;we are the best.”Soon, it was her turn to come on the stage. Hearing her name called, Mary walked on the stage with her heart beating faster and faster. She kept reminding herself,“I have been practicing for so long, and I will certainly make it.”But the serious pain in her arm came again when she was performing the most difficult spin. She fell down on the stage. At that moment, Linda came back in low spirits. To her surprise and relief she saw the tape and Mary's note. With Mary's kindness and encouragement, Linda finished her performance calmly and skillfully. Finally, Mary lost the game but she believed she had won something. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
