A Whenever I talk about personality in relation to choosing a career, some people complain like this: those tests are so stupid. When I was in sixth grade, I took one of them and it said that I should be a farmer. While I don't think I would be a very good farmer, the results are probably a lot more accurate than I'd like to admit. At the time, it seemed unreasonable — I hated the outdoors and physical activities. Now, I think it might have had some points that fit my personality: I like planning (good for planning how to grow crops), working by myself (for those long days on an agricultural machine), and sometimes working on a team (for harvest time). Watch out for any personality test that claims to be able to tell you what your dream job is by the type of animal you'd like to be, or from your favorite breakfast food as a child. While there are many personality assessments that are accurate, I'd like to say that they are a second step. The best choice is selfassessments. Before finding ways to know your work preferences, it's important to make a clear difference between liking a topic and liking the work. I once met a thirdyear marine biology student at a large state school in Ohio. He was placed into the Whale Watch program, where he found out that he became violently seasick on any kind of boat — a big disadvantage for a student who wanted to study whales in the wild. The best match is a career in which the major tasks of the work are the tasks you most enjoy doing and the topic is one of your interests. If that career doesn't exist, my advice would be to take the job where there is a skill match. In this way, you will succeed at the basic tasks of your job and perhaps become interested in it. 1.What is some people's opinion on choosing a career through personality tests? A.It's worth a try. B.It's unreasonable. C.It's helpful only in a limited way. D.It's possible to lead to career failure. 根据第一段中的“Whenever I talk about personality in relation to choosing a career, some people complain like this: those tests are so stupid”可知,一些人认为通过个性测试来选择职业是不合理的。故选B项。] 2.What does the author think of the personality test she took when she was young? A.She has little interest in it. B.She finds it helpless for her. C.She thinks it shows some part of her personality. D.She admits it forecasts her present job accurately. 根据第一段中的“the results are probably a lot more accurate than I'd like to admit(测试结果可能比我愿意承认的要准确得多)”以及“I think it might have had some points that fit my personality(我认为它可能有一些适合我个性的地方)”可知,作者认为该测试结果与她性格的某些方面相符。故选C项。] 3.What is the best way to know your dream job? A.Finding it out by yourself. B.Trying your dream job in practice. C.Doing accurate personality assessments. D.Taking personality tests on your favorite things. 根据第二段中的“While there are many personality assessments that are accurate,I'd like to say that they are a second step. The best choice is selfassessments”可知,尽管有很多准确的个性评估,但作者认为它们是第二选择,最好的选择是自我评估。由此推测,只有了解自己,才能知道自己梦想的工作是什么。故选A项。] 4.Why was the marine biology student unsuitable for his job? A.He disliked the job. B.He felt sick traveling on a boat. C.He was afraid of marine animals. D.He knew little about his preferences. 根据倒数第二段中的“He was placed into the Whale Watch program, where he found out that he became violently seasick on any kind of boat—a big disadvantage for a student who wanted to study whales in the wild”可知,这名学生被安排在观鲸项目中,在那里他发现自己乘坐任何类型的船都会严重晕船。 B Do you ever draw? Most of us don't, and the reason we usually leave drawing to the artists is because we're not very good at it. Who wants to do something they're bad at? But maybe we should rethink this belief, especially since drawing has so many benefits, whether you're an artist or not. Consider this idea:What if drawing was just a lowstakes (低风险) thing we did because we enjoyed it and it helped us see the world better? “We've missed the meaning of drawing because we see it as a professional skill instead of a personal ability,” writes design historian D.B. Dowd in his book Stick Figures: Drawing as a Human Practice. “This has stunted our understanding of drawing and kept it from being seen as a tool for learning above all else.” Dowd suggests we redefine the act of drawing. It's just a life skill, not a measure of your creativity. Just like writing a text to your friend is no big deal —certainly not the same as composing a poem — sketching (素描) should also be seen as a tool. Here's another example: You might enjoy eating at a restaurant that has an amazing cook, and you may also enjoy a great dish you make at home. One doesn't exclude (排斥) the other; you can appreciate a big meal as much as a homemade one — they're just different. The same is true for drawing. And you don't need special equipment to draw. The paper could be from a notebook devoted to the purpose, or just what's sitting around waiting to be recycled. It's great for a few things that are in short supply these days. Go ahead and put pen to paper, and you'll get more out of the practice. 5.What does D.B. Dowd think of drawing? A.It is a sign of beauty. B.It is a personal ability. C.It is a professional skill. D.It is a form of entertainment. 根据第三段We've missed the meaning of drawing because we see it as a professional skill instead of a personal ability 可知,他认为画画是一种个人能力。] 6.What does the underlined word “stunted”in Paragraph 3 mean? A.Provided. B.Developed. C.Changed. D.Prevented. 根据kept it from being seen as a tool for learning above all else 可推断,这一误解阻碍了我们对绘画的理解,故D项正确。] 7.The example in Paragraph 5 is used to show that drawing is . A.easy to learn B.just a life skill C.a fun activity D.popular with people 解析:B [推理判断题。本段是举例论证上一段提出的论点It's just a life skill。 8.What is the author's purpose in writing this text? A.To encourage people to draw. B.To tell people the benefits of drawing. C.To advise people to be open to new things. D.To persuade people to develop more skills. 根据最后一段的Go ahead and put pen to paper, and you'll get more out of the practice可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是鼓励大家画画。] Ⅱ. Music is an art form which deals with the representation of emotion through the medium of sound. It can have a physical effect on us because it is closely linked with emotion, perhaps even more than the abstract words. The first reason why people listen to music is to adjust their emotional state. 1 Numerous studies leave us in no doubt that music can affect our mood state and stress level. 2 For example, they have found that background music shuts out distractions. It calms them before a large task and then they can stay focused for longer. Also, it can help their creativity and make studying more enjoyable. 3 Firstly, it depends on what the task is. The more difficult the challenge is, the more likely background music will interrupt the learning process. For less challenging learning tasks, music can greatly assist in providing a positive learning state. Secondly, it depends on the characteristics of the music we'll come to in a moment. And thirdly, extroverts (性格外向者) enjoy and often require more external stimulation (刺激) and are likely to handle background noise better than those who are quiet and shy. Actually, it's not the genre (类型) of music, but the natural musical characteristics that aid or disrupt study. One of these characteristics is the tempo (拍子). The recommended tempo for background music is in the range of 70 to 110 beats per minute, slightly faster than the heartbeat when we are at rest. 4 And very slow music lowers the heartbeat, creating a state that might be too relaxed for study purposes. In addition, lyrics (歌词) are the most distracting aspect of listening to background music. 5 More particularly, studies have found that the most distracting background music is fast and familiar vocal music, chosen and liked by the listener. A. Music is part of every culture in the world. B.In a very real sense, music connects us with our inner selves. C.Music, like language, is a unique human form of communication. D.They compete with the same brain regions that process language. E.Fast music raises the heartbeat, making one unable to focus on study. F.There are a few factors that determine the effects of music on studying. G.Moreover, those who like studying with background music have found a lot of benefits. 1.解析:B [根据设空处前一句The first reason why people listen to music is to adjust their emotional state. 2.解析:G [ 根据设空处下一句For example, they have found that background music shuts out distractions. 4.解析:E [根据设空处下一句And very slow music lowers the heartbeat, creating a state that might be too relaxed for study purposes.
