Section Ⅳ Reading for Writing,Assessing Your Progress & Video Time IS EXPLORING SPACE A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY? NASA satellite image of Typhoon Goni Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should stop wasting time and money exploring space. Instead, we should feed the world's poor and find immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases. However,_others_feel_this_is_a_shallow_view_which_fails_to_realise_how_exploring_space_helps_us .[1] [1]这句话是主从复合句,feel后的this is a shallow view... Firstly, exploring space has already made a difference in the fight against world hunger. It has directly resulted in the many satellites that now orbit Earth. A number of the satellites record data on land and weather patterns. Then the data is transmitted to scientists on Earth. After careful analysis, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers. As a result, spacebased science has helped farming in its efforts to grow enough food to feed Earth's increasing population. Secondly, space exploration has already promoted technological improvements that benefit us all. Highend products around the world are made to a higher standard now because of advanced technology which was first created to meet the requirements for space exploration. For example, space technologies have helped the research and development of different types of new material. They have also helped companies make better heart monitors and other machines that doctors regularly use. Today, space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries, and everyday products such as GPS, memory foam pillows, and smartphone cameras are changing our lives. Finally, sending astronauts into space has helped people to think about the world's problems and even to find ways to solve them. Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea made people realise that our planet's resources are limited .[2] In order to provide for such a rapidly increasing population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home. The greatest attention at present is on Mars because it is closer to Earth. In the future, humans may live on both planets. Seeing pictures of our planet... In closing, exploring space provides the world with many different benefits. Therefore, it should continue so as to provide new and better solutions to people's shortterm and longterm problems. 神秘的;难以理解的,难以解释的,诡秘的 [重点短语] 1.make a difference有影响,起作用 2.result in 导致,造成 3.be transmitted to 被发送给 4.provide for sb.提供生活所需 5.as a result所以,结果是 6.the efforts to_do sth.做某事所付出的努力 7.be widely used in 在……方面被广泛应用 8. in closing最后 9.run out 用完;耗尽 10.succeed in doing sth. 上 [重点句式] 1.Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Ⅰ. Here's a list of some interesting facts about stars;some you might already know, and few that are going to be new. The sun is the closest star to the earth. The sun is about 150 million kilometers away. Our sun, like most other stars, gives off power and light by nuclear fusion(核聚变),which happens exactly where it's the hottest. The sun is about 4.5 billion years old and it will still last six billion years or so. When it runs out of its fuel (燃料),it would develop into a red star when increasing in size. Since stars are billions of light years away, it may be hard to recognize that stars are in continuous battles with themselves. All the stars have their own gravitational pull (引力) that pulls them. The surprising part is that the nuclear fusion occurring inside the star truly produces an outward (向外的) push to resist (抵抗) the gravitational force, which keeps its present shape. Stars have different colors. The hottest stars are surprisingly the smallest ones and are blue in color. Their temperatures go to about 12,000 Kelvin. Although the yellowcolored stars are the middlesized ones just like the sun, their temperatures fall to about 6,000 Kelvin. And lastly, the coolest and greatest ones are colored red and the temperatures of them are about 3,000 Kelvin. When looking at the night sky, we may think that stars are up there alone. But don't be surprised that these heavenly bodies in fact come in pairs. And stars can even come in groups of 3 or even 4! 1.What will happen when the sun runs out of its fuel? A.It will disappear slowly. B.It will last six billion years. C.It will become a white star. D.It will become larger in size. 根据第二段的“When it runs out of its fuel(燃料),it would develop into a red star when increasing in size.” 2.What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A.All stars are in a state of balance. B.It's hard for the stars to keep their shapes. C.The stars have the same gravitational pull. D.The stars always stay in peace with one another. 根据第三段的“The surprising part is that the nuclear fusion occurring inside the star truly produces an outward(向外的) push to resist(抵抗) the gravitational force, which keeps its present shape.” 3.What do we know about the color of the star? A.It is blue when it is very cold. B.It looks red when it is far away. C.It seems yellow when it is over 3,000 Kelvin. D.It has something to do with its size and temperature. 4.How do all the stars appear in space in reality? A.They appear only in pairs. B.They appear without rules. C.They stay alone here and there. D.They appear in small groups or in pairs. The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country look like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this fantastic scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them? Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining (减少的) population, including the most popular ones. What's more, half of all butterfly species are in danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping sharply. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly, which was commonly seen in the south, has started colonizing(迁徙) to Edinburgh in the past few years. The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past several years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler. Fortunately, Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year, compared to the last few summers. Butterfly Conservation believes the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies. Besides, their habitat is getting worse, which is also an important reason for the declining. The survey is still going on. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness (意识) of the value of butterflies in the UK. Butterflies give an indication (显示) of the wellbeing(健康)of nature.Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said:“Large numbers of butterflies tell us that nature is going well. When they decline,it's a warning that other wildlife will be soon going the same way.” ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ 答案:In Britain, butterfly species have been slowly dying out in the last few years.(要点1)A survey conducted by Butterfly Conservation has found three in four butterfly species in Britain are experiencing a decrease with half near extinction.(要点2)This is mainly due to the cold British summer and their worsening habitat.(要点3)The ongoing survey is meant to make people realize the importance of butterflies, which acts as an indicator of the health of nature.(要点4) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
