Section Ⅰ Listening and Speaking & Reading and Thinking (Ⅰ) Wednesday, 21 June Today was my first day back in San Francisco after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting the wine country of Napa Valley. I have to admit that it definitely feels good to be back in the city again. And what a city—a city that was able to rebuild itself after the earthquake that occurred in 1906 .[1] There are so many beautiful old buildings—many sitting on top of big hills, offering great views of the city, the ocean, and the Golden Gate Bridge. [1]what a city为感叹句;两个that均引导定语从句;after... My hotel is near downtown, in the Mission District, one of the oldest parts of the city. Many of the people living here are from Mexico or Central America. This district used to be a poor area of town, but is now a centre for art, music, and food. In fact, an art movement called the “Mission School” started here. It's influenced by graffiti art and comic art. I walked around looking at the street art for a few hours. It was quite modern and lively. Afterwards, I ate some delicious MexicanChinese noodles from a food truck. A real mix of cultures here! In the afternoon, I headed to a local museum that showed the historical changes in California.I learnt that America got California from Mexico in 1848. In the same year, gold was discovered near San Francisco, which started a gold rush. Over 300,000 people came from all over the world to seek their fortune, and San Francisco quickly became a big city. Many Chinese arrived during this period. To earn a living, some opened up shops and restaurants in Chinatown. Many others found jobs on farms, joined the gold rush, or went to build the railway that joined California to the eastern region of the country. The_museum_did_a_really_good_job_of_showing_how_America_was _built_by_immigrants_from_different_countries_and_cultures .[2] When these immigrants left their countries, they carried a bit of home in their hearts, and built a new home here. The evening, I went to Chinatown. There were so many good cafes and restaurants to choose from. I selected a Cantonese restaurant that served its food on beautiful china plates. What great food! That's enough for today. Tomorrow evening, I'm going to a jazz bar in the Richmond District. Can't wait! 答案:(1)camping (2)rebuild (3)District (4)poor (5)movement (6)changes (7)immigrants (8)cultures (9)cafes (10)jazz ◆[StepⅠ Prereading] Do you know about San Francisco? How about its history? 答案:The answer varies. ◆[StepⅡ Whilereading] Scan the text and answer the following questions. 1.The text is mainly about ________ . I grew up in the northern Indian city of Lucknow,in a culture in which saying thank you is not done lightly.I learned to say thank you in English in elementary school, and when I thanked anyone,I said it in English, which was less embarrassing and more casual(随便的)than doing so in Hindi.I reserved my thanks for those who had done me huge favors. And I rarely thanked my friends or classmates. When I did, they either smiled quizzically(感觉好笑地)at me or regarded the act as a playful way to practice English. Saying dhanyavaad or thank you in Hindi to someone without looking at him or her is just as good as not saying it at all.As a kid,I heard my father say dhanyavaad to people his age,and he did it as sincerely as possible, with his hands joined in front of his chest. He wasn't just thanking someone for something, but asking for an opportunity to return the favor. Now,when I travel to India,I often offend (冒犯)people by saying thank you to them.On a recent trip home,I was invited to my uncle's house for dinner. He's been a father figure to me,teaching me many things at every step of my life. That day,I made the mistake of telling him,in English,“Thank you for inviting me”before leaving his house. He didn't reply, but I saw his expression turn sour.I couldn't even apologize for thanking him.The damage was done. 1.What do we know about the author from the first paragraph? A.He thinks Americans are too polite. B.He appreciates the American culture. C.He is used to the American thankyou culture. D.He is popular with Americans for his politeness. 根据第一段I now say thank you about 50 times a day.Often I do it without thinking可推断作者已经习惯美国的“道谢”文化。] 2.When the author was a child,he ________ . A.felt it embarrassing to say thank you B.said thank you in a casual way C.often practiced English by saying thank you D.thanked his friends in English for their kindness 解析:A [事实细节题。根据第二段when I thanked anyone,I said it in English, which was less embarrassing and more casual than doing so in Hindi可知,小时候作者觉得说声“谢谢”是一件令人尴尬的事,故选A项。] 3.What should one do when saying dhanyavaad in Hindi according to the text? A.Speak it in a gentle and sincere voice. B.Put his hand in front of his chest. C.Look at the person. D.Had better wear big smile on his face. 根据第三段Saying dhanyavaad or thank you in Hindi to someone without looking at him or her is just as good as not saying it at all可知,在印度说谢谢的时候要看着对方,以示真诚,故选C项。] 4.What can be inferred about the Indian culture from the last paragraph? A.Saying thank you in a foreign language is impolite. B.One shouldn't say thank you in a casual way. C.It is unusual to apologize to family members. D.It creates distance to thank someone close. 根据最后一段He's been a father figure to me,teaching me many things at every step of my life可知,作者的叔叔是其非常亲近的人。 B Who says only big cities can be beautiful and charming? The world is full of really eyecatching and fascinating villages and small towns—you'll find some of the most interesting in the list below: Places Descriptions Alberobello Alberobello,in southeastern Italy, features perhaps the best examples of a kind of dry stone hut with a conical(圆锥的)roof. These modest traditional huts are great examples of ancient building techniques, even though these constructions aren't more than a few centuries old. Reine As a part of the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway,Reine is one of the most beautiful and welcoming places in the north of the Arctic Circle.Surprisingly, mild weather means that locals and travelers alike can take full advantage of the impressive surroundings, whether that means hiking,or admiring the scenery and the unique Fishermen's huts. Eze Eze is a breathtakingly beautiful place, located on the French Riviera.Rising 1,400 feet above the sea,it overlooks the coasts and offers amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea.In addition to its location,Eze features a certain medieval(中世纪的)charm, thanks to its many wellpreserved centuriesold buildings. Not surprisingly, the fairytale village was a favorite of Walt Disney's. Tulou Clusters Fujian Tulou is largely made up of the clay buildings in Yongding County and Nanjing County in the southwest Fujian Province. The Nanjing Tulou Cluster consists of 3 parts—Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster,Yuchanglou and Taxia Village.Roughly Nanjing Tulou Cluster is about 160km west of Xiamen and takes one and half hours' drive from Xiamen.Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster consists of 5 clay buildings, with a square tulou at the center and circled by 4 circular tulous, forming a pretty pattern of so called “four dishes with one soup”. 5.Which country may suit you best for a visit if you are a fishinglover? A.Italy. B.Norway. C.France. D.China. 由第二个景点介绍中的“Surprisingly, mild weather means that locals and travelers alike can take full advantage of the impressive surroundings, whether that means hiking,or admiring the scenery and the unique fishermen's huts.” 6.Which of the following makes Tianluokeng Tulou Clusters attractive? A.Its building material. B.Its location. C.Its number of clay buildings. D.Its architectural shape and design. 根据最后一个景点介绍中的“Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster consists of 5 clay buildings, with a square tulou at the center and circled by 4 circular tulous, forming a pretty pattern of so called‘four dishes with one soup’”可知,田螺坑土楼由五座黏土建筑组成,中间有一方形土楼,四周围绕着四座圆形土楼,形成“四菜一汤”的漂亮图案。 7.What can we learn about the places mentioned in the text? A.They all feature wellpreserved traditional buildings. B.They are all situated in wealthy developed countries. C.They are all places providing visual feasts for tourists. D.They are all small towns with fascinating scenery and mild weather. 根据第一段“The world is full of really eyecatching and fascinating villages and small towns”可知,世界上到处都是引人注目的迷人的村庄和小镇。 What Is Culture? Culture is too complex to define in simple terms. ____1____ One is that culture is a total pattern of behaviour that is consistent in its components. Another is that culture is learned behaviour. The third is that culture is behaviour that is shared by a group of people. Material culture includes the tools and symbols in a society, not including those physical things found in nature, unless they have undergone some change or have been given meaning by people. ____2____ The way we consume and what we consume are heavily influenced by material culture. ____3____ Linked with all other aspects of culture, it reflects the nature and values of that culture. The Inuit in Alaska have many words to describe snow whereas English has only one general term. Social organisation differs somewhat from society to society. The primary kind of community association is based on blood ties. ____4____ It provides mutual protection, psychological support, and a kind of economic insurance or social security for its members. Understanding the various dimensions and their inter relatedness helps promote crosscultural awareness. ____5____ A.Some scholars even suggest that it is useless to try. B.Language is the most obvious difference between cultures. C. However, there are certain agreedon fundamentals that can be easily identified.
