Jane Goodall, a worldwide name, passed away in 2025 at the age of 91. Her life’s work changed how humans see themselves in connection with the animal world.
In 1960, at 26 and without a university degree, Jane arrived at Gombe National Park in Tanzania. Her task was to study wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩). With great patience and strong will, she won their trust and made discoveries that shocked the scientific world. She found that chimpanzees not only used tools but also made them — a behavior once thought only to be for humans. She also noticed that each chimp had a special personality. She gave them names like David Greybeard and Flo, treating them as independent ones.
Her findings published in magazines and her bestselling book In the Shadow of Man made her famous. They showed the line between humans and animals is much thinner than once believed. Later she earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
However, Jane’s journey didn’t end in the forest. In 1986, after learning about the dangers facing chimpanzees, she changed from a scientist into a global activist (全球活动家). She traveled endlessly, giving speeches to inspire people to protect nature. She started the Jane Goodall Institute and a young people’s program called Roots & Shoots, delivering a message of hope and action.
She faced challenges bravely. A story from a workmate describes a difficult hike (远足) through a forest that left her feet badly hurt. The next morning, she learned a simple trick to protect her feet. By the following day, she was doing it herself, showing her practical and independent spirit.
Jane Goodall’s true contribution is valued not in prizes, but in the millions she inspired — especially young women — and in the greater understanding and care for chimpanzees and our shared planet. She showed the world that hope is a powerful force for change through her actions.
4. What can we learn about Jane Goodall’s early research?
A. It made her lose a degree. B. It was supported by experts.
C. It was done in the laboratory. D. It required good qualities.
5. Why did Goodall become a global activist in 1986?
A. She wanted to make herself famous. B. She felt she must deal with risks.
C. She lost interest in doing research. D. She was inspired by a program.
6. What is Goodall’s opinion on hope and change?
A. Speeches spread hope. B. Hope drives change.
C. Teenagers bring hope. D. Science needs change.
7. Which of the following best describes Goodall?
A. Open-minded. B. Self-centered. C. Warm-hearted. D. Strong-minded.

Australia has become the first country to introduce a law preventing children under the age of 16 from holding accounts on social media. The new rule, which came into force on December 10, 2025, aims to protect young people from the possible mental (心理的) health risks.
The government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, believes the step will provide young people with a safer online environment and reduce their social media pressure. “Young people need the space to grow up,” Albanese stated, stressing concerns about how these social media may influence young people’s well-being.
A main practical challenge about this law is enforcement (执行). The law requires these social media to check users’ ages, but it remains unclear how this will be done effectively. Experts point out that children can easily change their age, making the rule useless. There are also privacy concerns, as stricter age check could force all users to share more personal information.
The law has caused a lot of discussions. Experts think it could let teenagers stay away from their online social networks and support systems. Some social media companies warn that the law might make younger users less safe, though opening accounts often comes with safety protections designed for children under 16. They suggest that education on safe usage would be more effective. At the same time, the law faces challenges. Two 15-year-olds, supported by the Digital Freedom Project, are challenging it, stating it was unfair to them to reduce their freedom of communication.
Anyhow, some social media companies have already begun to follow the rules to avoid heavy fines. The move is being closely watched all over the world, with several countries in Asia and Europe considering or testing similar laws.
As the world pays attention to Australia’s try, the balance between online safety and online freedom remains a heated and unsolved matter.
8. What is the main purpose of Australia’s new social media law?
A. To control the Internet strictly. B. To reduce teenagers’ accounts.
C. To protect teens’ mental health. D. To develop more social media.
9. What does the underlined word “well-being” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Health. B. Growth. C. Freedom. D. Privacy.
10. Why is the enforcement of the rule difficult?
A. Children can hide their true age easily. B. Social media refuse to work together.
C. The government lacks money to check. D. Teens are against sharing information.
11. What do the two 15-year-olds think of the law?
A. It’s meaningful. B. It’s unacceptable. C. It’s surprising. D. It’s effective.

To deal with the problems of human kidney transplantation (肾脏移植), doctors in New York have started a new program. This aims to test whether specially designed pig kidneys could take the place of human kidneys effectively. The program brings new hope to over 100, 000 people waiting for kidney transplants in the US.
Patients with failing kidneys who cannot receive a human transplant in time depend on dialysis, a treatment that cleans their blood regularly. Over the past years, scientists have explored animal-to-human transplants to provide another choice. Pigs were chosen first because they’re easy to get and their kidneys are similar to humans’.
The biggest risk is that the human immune system rejects (排斥) the new kidney. But scientists have recently focused on pigs with genetically- edited (基因编辑的) DNA. They edit the pig’s genes by making changes and adding some of human DNA so that the kidneys are less likely to be rejected.
These changes have led to great progress. While early pig kidney transplants only worked for a short time, recent cases have shown longer- lasting results. In 2024 a woman lived with a pig kidney for over four months. Later that year, 67-year-old Tim Andrews set a new record, living for nearly nine months.
Now, with government support, a company named United Therapeutics has begun a study. The first research was done successfully at NYU Langone Health in early November, 2025. This time there are six patients, but in future, more patients will take part. Another company, eGenesis, is also preparing to start a similar study.
This new program is expected to provide important information on the safety and challenges of pig kidney transplants. It will help tell the most effective genetic edits and explore ways to help patients live longer, which is seen as an important step toward offering hope to the tens of thousands whose lives depend on finding a suitable kidney.
12. What is the function of the new program?
A. To improve kidney treatment. B. To reduce transplant cost.
C. To test edited pig kidneys. D. To increase human volunteers.
13. Why were pigs first chosen?
A. They have kidneys similar to humans’. B. They are especially easy to feed.
C They live the longest among animals. D. They carry fewer diseases.
14. What does the author want to say in paragraph 4?
A Patients have a better life than before. B. The early results were not good at all.
C. The DNA study still has a long way. D. Genetic technology improves greatly.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Big Challenge B. New Hope for Patients
C. A Possible Treatment D. History of DNA Edits

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day after school, I made my way to the library for the Writing Club. Miss Lisa, our writing teacher, explained that I’d be sharing stories with Penny, a new member of the club. Penny had a reputation (名声) for her vivid (生动的) storytelling and I couldn’t help but feel a bit of pressure. My own story, while rich in imagination, was often marked by awkward sentences and occasional spelling mistakes that I was painfully aware of as I handed it in.
I was nervous about my story’s spelling and grammar. As I read Penny’s story about a dog named Sunny, I was surprised. It was not only technically perfect but also deeply moving, a story of friendship and trust that left me truly touched. I thought I had no suggestions for improvement; her story was nearly perfect. It was inspiring.
The next day, I went up to Penny during our break. I said to her, “I enjoyed your writing and hoped I could write as well.” I also mentioned that I had plenty of story ideas but had difficulty writing good sentences. Penny smiled and encouraged me, saying that practice makes perfect and that everyone starts somewhere. Her words were simple but honest, and they relieved my nervousness.
Suddenly, I had a good idea. I asked Penny if we could work on a story together. I believed that my ideas and her writing ability could lead to a surprising story. To my pleasure, Penny’s eyes lit up, and she immediately agreed. I felt a wave of excitement.
We couldn’t wait to share our plan with Miss Lisa. We already had a story idea in mind: two friends face and solve a difficult problem together. This new writing project excited us both, and we wanted badly to start this difficult journey, believing that our teamwork would bring our ideas to life on paper. Weeks passed, and our story slowly formed.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

At the same time we faced a lot of challenges.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. A 11. B

C. They live the longest among animals. D. They carry fewer diseases.
14. What does the author want to say in paragraph 4?
A. Patients have a better life than before. B. The early results were not good at all.
C. The DNA study still has a long way. D. Genetic technology improves greatly.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Big Challenge B. New Hope for Patients
C. A Possible Treatment D. History of DNA Edits
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

【答案】Good morning, dear teachers and fellow students,
I’m Li Hua, and it’s my great honor to stand here as a freshman representative.
Since entering senior high, English activities have brought me great progress. They helped me build confidence in speaking English and made me more willing to communicate with others, which is a precious growth for me.
I’ve gained not only better English skills but also friendship through these activities. We learn from each other and help each other. In the future, I’ll take part in more English activities actively and work hard to improve my comprehensive English ability. I believe our English activities will get better and better!
Thank you for your listening!
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节 (满分25分)

【答案】
At the same time we faced a lot of challenges. We often clashed over plot details: I wanted bold, surprising twists, while Penny preferred gentle, logical turns. Once we argued fiercely about how the two friends should solve their problem, and we didn’t speak to each other for a whole afternoon. But later, we realized we both cared about the story deeply. We started to compromise — we added a small unexpected twist while keeping the solution true to the characters’ friendship. Penny also patiently helped me fix my awkward sentences, and I shared wild ideas that made the story more lively.
Finally, the day came when we presented our story to the Writing Club. As we read it together, I could see the club members leaning forward, completely hooked. When we finished, everyone cheered loudly. Miss Lisa stood up and said our story was a perfect example of teamwork — how different strengths could create something wonderful. Penny and I grinned at each other, feeling proud and warm. This experience taught us that great writing isn’t just about talent, but about listening and working together.
