M: Eight at least. They can live three to six months.

M: No! There isn’t a light on it like a computer has, so it doesn’t tire your eyes.

M: I just buy books for it online and they get delivered straight to the reader.

根据“Tour Highlights”部分中的“●Must-see sights in China — Terracotta Warriors, Famen Temple, the Mogao Caves, Maiji Caves and Jiayuguan Pass(●中国必看景点——兵马俑、法门寺、莫高窟、麦积山石窟和嘉峪关)”可知,人们在旅途中会欣赏著名的古代景点。

B
Sometimes there’s nothing better than the “rush” you feel when you’re going at high speeds, or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding. These are the adventures we “thrill seekers (寻找刺激的人)” live for. But sometimes we also need to know when to slow down.
Recently, I went quad biking (摩托车越野), or ATV driving, on a track in the mountains. After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets (头盔), started our engines and got onto the track. The sound of the engine was exciting. As I got more confident, I couldn’t help overtaking other drivers whenever I got the chance. Finally, the way forward opened up and I went ahead of the others. I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed.
Luckily, I knew it was happening and pushed myself out of the way of the falling ATV. If I had not, I probably would have broken my leg beneath the weight of the ATV or even lost it. I might have even broken my neck. It ended up turning out fine, apart from some soreness (疼痛) in my chest for a week or so. This was a surprise for my friend. After seeing the accident, he said to me, “Dude, I thought you were dead.” Perhaps I could have very well died, if I hadn’t been lucky that day.
That event was one I’ll always remember for the adventure and the near-death experience. It’s good to be adventurous, but it’s still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures, but be smart while you’ re on them!
24. What did the author do before starting his quad biking adventure?
A. He checked his ATV again and again.
B. He received some instruction and waited.
C. He made a personal survey of the track.
D. He shared his experience with other drivers.
25. What happened when the author tried to race down a small hill?
A. He lost control of his ATV. B. He slowed down his speed.
C. He broke his neck and leg. D. He hit his friend’s ATV.
26. How would you describe the author?
A. Bold and careful. B. Risky and wise.
C. Adventurous and lucky. D. Humorous and smart.
27. What’s the main message the author wants to convey in the text?
A. Never be afraid of failure in life.
B. It is fun to live an adventurous life.
C. Accidents are a natural part of adventures.
D. Keep safety in mind while on an adventure.
B 25. A 26. C 27. D
根据第二段中的“After a brief instructional exercise and what seemed like lots of waiting, we put on our helmets (头盔), started our engines and got onto the track. (在进行了简短的指导练习和似乎漫长的等待之后,我们戴上头盔,启动引擎,上了赛道。)”可知,作者在开始他的四轮摩托车冒险之前,接受了一些指导并等待了一段时间。故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“I turned toward a small hill and raced down. As I soon found out, this was a big mistake. My ATV turned over at full speed. (我转向一座小山,冲了下去。我很快就发现,这是一个大错误。我的四轮摩托车全速翻车了。)”可知,当作者试图冲下一座小山时,他失去了对四轮摩托车的控制,导致摩托车翻车。故选A。
根据第一段“Sometimes there’s nothing better than the “rush” you feel when you’re going at high speeds, or the wonder of going somewhere new and different, climbing a mountain or enjoying extreme sports like snowboarding. These are the adventures we “thrill seekers (寻找刺激的人)” live for. (有时候,没有什么比高速飞驰时的刺激感更美妙的了;或是探索全新陌生之地、攀登高山、体验单板滑雪等极限运动带来的惊奇。这些,就是我们“追求刺激的人”为之而活的冒险。)”可知,作者热衷于寻求刺激、尝试冒险活动,这表明他具有冒险精神;根据第三段中“Luckily, I knew it was happening and pushed myself out of the way of the falling ATV. If I had not, I probably would have broken my leg beneath the weight of the ATV or even lost it. I might have even broken my neck.(幸运的是,我意识到要出事了,于是赶紧从翻倒的四轮摩托车旁挪开。如果我没有这么做,我可能会被四轮摩托车的重量压断腿,甚至失去整条腿。我甚至可能会摔断脖子。)”可知,在事故发生时,他幸运地避免了重伤,这表明他很幸运。因此,最符合作者特点的描述是“Adventurous and lucky(冒险且幸运)”。故选C。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段中的“It’s good to be adventurous, but it’s still really important to be wise and careful too. So, go on adventures, but be smart while you’re on them!(冒险是好事,但明智和小心也同样重要。所以,去冒险吧,但在冒险时要聪明点!)”可知,作者想要传达的主要信息是:在冒险时要牢记安全。故选D。
C
There’s a song in your head. You keep hearing it repeatedly. You can’t make it stop, and it’s driving you crazy! Has this happened to you? Maybe you have suffered from an earworm, which is a memory of a song.
Earworms are common. A study showed that 90 percent of people experience them. Why do we get earworms? According to neurologist Oliver Sacks, music affects us whether we pay attention to it or not. We’re surrounded by music all the time in our everyday lives. Sacks wonders if there is a higher incidence (发生率) of earworms today because of all this music in our environment.
Research on the primary auditory cortex (听觉皮层) supports Sacks’ ideas. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain that processes sound. It’s a short-term storage system for small amounts of auditory information. Some of this auditory information is forgotten, and some of it goes into long-term memory. However, songs appear to stay in the auditory cortex for a long time.
James Kellaris, a professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati, thinks that only certain types of songs become earworms. These songs are repetitive, simple, and incongruous (不协调的) — something unexpected such as uneven rhythm. Your brain pays a lot of attention to a song like this, Kellaris says. Because it is repetitive and unusual, it stays longer in the auditory cortex. At that point, Kellaris believes, it becomes an annoying earworm.
Advertisers often use jingles — short songs that are easy to remember to promote sales. Advertisers want jingles to stick in people’s minds to keep them thinking about their products. It seems that advertisers have learned what Kellaris has found out in his research.
Is there any way to get rid of an earworm? Here are some tips Kellaris collected: replace the earworm song with another song, try to distract yourself by doing an intense activity such as exercising, or tell someone about your earworm. What if none of these strategies work? Then perhaps you should just sit back and try to enjoy the music in your head!
28. How does the author lead to the topic?
A. By giving a definition. B. By clarifying a question.
C. By drawing a conclusion. D. By describing a phenomenon.
29. What might contribute to the higher incidence of earworms today?
A. People having better memories. B. The decrease in the quality of music.
C. The large amount of music around us. D. People listening to music more carefully.
30. Why does the author mention auditory cortex?
A. To explain the workings of earworms. B. To prove the significance of music.
C. To emphasize the necessity of the research. D. To introduce the effect of memory.
31. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Earworms come and go in a flash. B. Jingles have nothing to do with earworms.
C. Earworms are welcomed by music lovers. D. Enjoying the earworms might be the last choice.
D 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第一段“There’s a song in your head. You keep hearing it repeatedly. You can’t make it stop, and it’s driving you crazy! Has this happened to you? Maybe you have suffered from an earworm, which is a memory of a song.(有一首歌在你的脑海里萦绕。你不断地反复听到它。你无法让它停下来,这快把你逼疯了!你遇到过这种情况吗?也许你正遭受着“耳虫”的困扰,“耳虫”就是对某一首歌的记忆)”并结合下文对耳虫的成因及相关研究的介绍可知,作者通过描述一种现象,即脑海里反复出现一首歌且无法停止的现象,来引出“耳虫”这个话题。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Sacks wonders if there is a higher incidence (发生率) of earworms today because of all this music in our environment.(Sacks怀疑,由于我们所处环境中存在着这么多的音乐,如今“耳虫”的发生率是否更高了)”可知,可能导致如今“耳虫”发生率较高的是我们周围大量的音乐。
根据第三段“Research on the primary auditory cortex (听觉皮层) supports Sacks’ ideas. The auditory cortex is the part of the brain that processes sound. It’s a short-term storage system for small amounts of auditory information. Some of this auditory information is forgotten, and some of it goes into long-term memory. However, songs appear to stay in the auditory cortex for a long time.(对初级听觉皮层的研究支持了Sacks的观点。听觉皮层是大脑中处理声音的部分。它是一个用于少量听觉信息的短期存储系统。这些听觉信息中的一部分会被遗忘,而另一部分则会进入长期记忆。然而,歌曲似乎会在听觉皮层中停留很长时间)”可知这是在解释“耳虫”(歌曲在脑海中反复出现)产生的原理。由此推知,作者提到听觉皮层是为了解释“耳虫”的工作原理,即为什么某些歌曲会在我们脑海中反复出现且难以摆脱。故选A。
根据最后一段“Is there any way to get rid of an earworm? Here are some tips Kellaris collected: replace the earworm song with another song, try to distract yourself by doing an intense activity such as exercising, or tell someone about your earworm. What if none of these strategies work? Then perhaps you should just sit back and try to enjoy the music in your head!(有没有什么办法能摆脱“耳虫”呢?
D
Smart phones are greatly changing the way we walk down the street. Office workers and young people are walking like the old as they check emails and messages.
Scientists have found mobile phones make us walk more slowly, with modest steps, to avoid falling over. The leader of the study said the walk is just like someone in their eighties. Researchers found people writing a text message walk more than twice as slowly as those without a phone, finding it harder to stay in a straight line.
The scientists examined 252 people walking while reading a text message, writing one, speaking on their phones or without their phones at all. Writing a text is the hardest activity, causing people to look down at their phone 46 percent more, and 45 percent longer, than when reading a message. This led people to walk 118 per cent more slowly than when they were without their phones. People walked almost a third more slowly while reading a text and 19 per cent while talking on the phone.
Smart phones were found to stop people from walking in a straight line, putting them at greater risk of running into other people, cars or street lamps. This increased the need to slow down and take more careful steps.
John Timmis said the idea for this study came from following someone walking down the street in the afternoon, who was walking as if he had had several drinks. I thought it was a bit early for that, then walked up alongside him and saw that he was on his phone. Simply being on the phone changes the way people walk.
32. What does the underlined word “modest” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Young. B. Straight.
C. Low. D. Small.
33. Based on the text, who walk the most slowly?
A. Those not carrying phones.
B. Those writing a text message.
C. Those reading a text message.
D. Those speaking on their phones.
34. What made people with phones take more careful steps?
A. The need to walk straight.
B. The desire to use their phones.
C. The chance of possible accidents.
D. The traffic jams during rush hours.
35. What made John Timmis decide to do the research?
A. Seeing office workers walking like the elderly.
B. Seeing people walking in the street hurriedly.
C. Watching young people who were walking normally.
D. watching a person who was walking in the street in a strange way .
D 33. B 34. C 35. D
根据第二段“Scientists have found mobile phones make us walk more slowly, with modest steps, to avoid falling over.(科学家发现,手机会让我们走得更慢,用modest steps ,以免摔倒)”中“walk more slowly”和“to avoid falling over”可推知,为了避免摔倒,我们走路速度会变慢,步子变小,所以修饰名词steps的划线形容词modest的意思在句中应该是“small”,表示“用小步”。
根据第三段“Writing a text is the hardest activity, causing people to look down at their phone 46 percent more, and 45 percent longer, than when reading a message. This led people to walk 118 per cent more slowly than when they were without their phones. People walked almost a third more slowly while reading a text and 19 per cent while talking on the phone. (写短信是最困难的活动,相比阅读短信,人们低头看手机的时间要多出46%,长出45%。这导致人们走路的速度比不带手机时慢了118%。看短信时,人们的走路速度会慢三分之一,打电话时慢19%) ”可知,与不带手机相比,看短信时,人们的走路速度会慢三分之一,打电话时会慢19%,而写短信会慢了118%,所以写短信的人走路最慢。故选B项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Smart phones were found to stop people from walking in a straight line, putting them at greater risk of running into other people, cars or street lamps. This increased the need to slow down and take more careful steps.(研究发现,智能手机会阻碍人们走直线,使他们更有可能撞到其他人、汽车或路灯。这增加了放慢速度和采取更谨慎步骤的必要性)”可知,行走时使用智能手机会增加发生事故的可能性,这让使用手机的人走路时更加小心。故选C项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“John Timmis said the idea for this study came from following someone walking down the street in the afternoon, who was walking as if he had had several drinks.(约翰·蒂米斯说,这项研究的想法来自于跟随一个下午在街上走的人,这个人走起路来好像喝了几杯酒似的)”可知,John Timmis做这一研究的诱因是他看见一个人以一种奇怪的方式在街上行走。故选D项。

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o’clock. Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning!”
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
“Good morning Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?” Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother’s birthday?!
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Para. 1
Jane hurried to Tom's room and shared her plan with him. Tom jumped out of bed immediately when he heard about the surprise for their mother. They divided the tasks: Jane would clean the living room and wash the dirty clothes, while Tom would sweep the floor and decorate the house with some colorful balloons they had saved. They worked busily, singing and laughing. By noon, the house was tidied up and looked warm and beautiful. Then they started to prepare a simple but delicious lunch for their mother.
Para. 2
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Their mother was shocked and then moved to tears. She looked at the clean house, the delicious food on the table and the balloons around. Just then, the doorbell rang. It was the cake ordered by their father. The three of them sat around the table, enjoying the cake and the happy moment. Their mother hugged them tightly, saying it was the best birthday she had ever had.

A Never be afraid of failure in life.
B. It is fun to live an adventurous life.
C. Accidents are a natural part of adventures.
D. Keep safety in mind while on an adventure.

“Good morning, Dad.
