Grammar and Vocabulary (20’) Section A(10’) Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. Here’s a secret: There’s no such thing as neurodiversity. And yet there is. Confused? Let me explain. I ____21____ (call) “oversensitive” for years my whole life. People say I’m a “perfectionist” who overthinks everything. But here’s the thing — everyone is different from everyone else. We all have unique genes, experiences, and ways of understanding the world. In the truest sense, we’re all neurodivergent So why are some people regarded as “different” while ____22____ get to be “normal”? I’m a columnist, and my job exists because of ____23____ my brain works. My overthinking makes me look deeply into daily experiences other people might ignore, which helps me find the truths ____24____ (bury) inside ordinary moments. My sensitivity allows me to see situations from many angles, while my perfectionism turns messy drafts into something people want to read, ____25____ has actually become my strengths though society calls them “problems”. My friend Bohan Zhang, a counseling psychologist, explains it clearly: “Everyone has their own lived experience.” The problem comes when we decide what counts as ‘normal’ thinking. This matters especially now when attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD,注意力缺陷多动障碍) is popular on social media. In his work, Bohan often sees that people get the wrong idea from social media about ADHD. He reminds us that ADHD doesn’t explain all problems with time or motivation, and having ADHD isn’t ____26____ excuse to avoid responsibility. Any condition — or talent, or difference — ____27____ (mean) you must take ownership of it. You are always bigger than any label. Throughout history, people have constantly changed the definition of “normal”. ____28____ (not fit) this narrow standard, those labeled as different were actually many gifted individuals like Michael Phelps, Van Gogh, and Temple Grandin, who, with transformative ideas and creations, achieved remarkable success in their fields ____29____ their differences. But here’s the important part — nobody thinks exactly like everyone else anyway. I spent years thinking I was too sensitive, but in a world where pretending sameness is good, being authentically different is perfect. You’re not broken; you’re human. So instead of trying to fit narrow ideas of “normal”, question what “normal” even means. Your way of thinking may be exactly what the world needs. Work with your brain, not against it, ____30____ your differences will become your gift. Section B(10’) Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. network B. specify C. traditionally D. ingredient E. uneasy F. additional G. culturally H. block I. determine J. requirement K. critical A multicultural person is someone who is deeply convinced that all cultures are equally good, enjoys learning the rich variety of cultures in the world, and most likely has been exposed to more than one culture in his or her lifetime. You cannot motivate anyone, especially someone of another culture, until that person has accepted you. A multilingual salesperson can explain the advantages of a product in other languages, but a multicultural salesperson can motivate foreigners to buy it. That’s a(an) ___31___difference. No one likes foreigners who are arrogant(自大的) about their own culture. The trouble is most people are arrogantly monocultural without being aware of it and even those who are can’t hide it. Foreigners sense monocultural arrogance at once and set up their own cultural barriers, which may effectively ___32___ any attempt by the monocultural person to motivate them. Multiculturalism is a(an) ___33___ that has been neglected too often in hiring managers for international positions. Even if your company is not a multinational one, chances are you’re in touch with foreign customers or manufacturers. Do you have the right employee to build up the ___34___? For 20-odd years, I’ve run an executive-search firm from Brussels. When clients ask us to find the right person for a new pan-European sales or management position, I start by asking them to ___35___ the qualifications their ideal candidate would have. Most often they list the same qualities they would want for a domestic position, but with the ___36___ requirement that the new manager be fluent enough in English, German and French to cope with faxes and email. It sometimes takes me hours to persuade clients that the linguistic (语言的)abilities they see as crucial are not enough. Of course, it’s far more difficult to ___37___ candidates multiculturalism than it is to check their language skills—but it’s also a far more important ___38___ to success. I remember a company that asked me to check out a salesman they were planning to send to Mexico. He’d studied Spanish, and had grown up in New York City—the most ___39___ diverse place in America. But when I interviewed him, he turned out to have no concept of the great pride Mexicans took in their culture, and moreover he was ____40____ about Mexican restaurants and markets being dirty and unsafe. I rejected him just as Mexican buyers would have if he’d been selected for the job. III. Reading Comprehension (45’) Section A(15’) Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. Why are so Many Whales Washing up Dead on East-coast Beaches? Luna was last seen alive in September off the coast of Nova Scotia. Scientists had been tracking the 40-year-old whale for decades. Like all humpback whales, his tail, called a fluke, had distinctive pigmentation (色素沉淀) patterns. These are used by scientists as a sort of ____41____. Luna’s fluke had a moon shape, hence his name. Those tracking him knew every scar and took ____42____ of new ones whenever they saw him. The next time he was seen was when his carcass washed ashore in January on Lido Beach on Long Island, about 40 miles (65km) from Manhattan and 600 miles from Nova Scotia. Whales have been dying in ____43____ numbers along America’s east coast since 2016. So much so that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency that monitors fisheries and oceans, ____44____ the existence of an “Unusual Mortality Event” back in 2017. Prior to 2007, Rob DiGiovanni, the chief scientist at the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which surveys wildlife and conducts necropsies (尸检), said he saw ____45____ whales just once every two years. Then it became one to three a year; now it is every few weeks. Since the start of December, 29 dead whales, including right whales, whose ____46____ are already precarious, have washed ashore along America’s east coast. Luna was the tenth of 13 whales to be found dead on New York and New Jersey beaches. Scientists are trying to figure out why. A whale necropsy is a huge ____47____. The equipment may entail cranes (起重机) to lift the whale, as well as sharp knives to fillet it. In 40% of the necropsies, there was evidence of blunt force trauma or propeller wounds, which indicates the whales were ____48____ by a vessel, or evidence of entanglement in fishing gear. Some die of ____49____ causes; others from ingesting debris Paul Sieswerda of Gotham Whale, a research organisation, said that vessel strikes are the ______50______ of “the butler standing there with a smoking gun.” Preliminary findings from Luna’s necropsy indicate a vessel was the probable cause of death. Whale sightings, particularly of humpbacks, have increased in the New York Bight, which stretches from the tip of Long Island to the far end of the Jersey Shore. Like their human ______51______, the whales are drawn to the Big Apple’s cuisine. Menhaden, a kind of fish many whales ______52______, have increased off the shores of New York and New Jersey, possibly because of warming waters. No longer must people trek to Maine or Nantucket to ______53______ whales. New Yorkers can observe them near city beaches. Several whale-watching companies, including in Brooklyn, have ______54______. Unfortunately, the whales are essentially playing in______55______. New York Harbour is America’s busiest port, which puts the whales in the path of all sorts of vessels, including enormous container ships and cruise liners. Some of the carcasses on the beach are the result. 41. A. reaction B. language C. fingerprint D. culture 42. A. care B. note C. charge D. advantage 43. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) English is a fun language, and even though it’s considered an accessible and relatively easy one to learn, with 750,000 words and spelling that can throw off even the most skilled learner, learning English fast can seem impossible. Take the following tips on how to learn English faster as your starting point and you’ll master this wonderful language in no time! TIP 1 ______ Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your social media feed: if it’s in English, read it. Why? Well, this content will be full of juicy new vocabulary, as well as a fair amount you already know. This helps you improve quickly, as repeated exposure to learned vocabulary gives you new examples in context, therefore reinforcing those words in your mind. On the other hand, learning new words and expressions is essential to building your vocabulary, particularly in a language like English with so many words! TIP 2 ACTIVELY TAKE NOTE OF NEW VOCABULARY This tip is a classic one for good reason. It works! When learning, we often enjoy a new word or phrase so much that forgetting it seems impossible. But trust us, not everything sticks the first time. To fight this, get into the habit of carrying around a notebook. Whenever you hear or read a new word or expression, write it down in context: that is, in a sentence and with its meaning noted. This saves you time as you won’t return to that word and ask yourself: “What did that word/expression mean again?” TIP 3 TALK WITH REAL LIVE HUMANS What is a language for if not to communicate? It’s true that speaking a language helps it stick in your head far better than only reading or writing it. Just think of how many times you’ve heard people say that they “understand, but can’t speak English” A lot of would-be English speakers have turned talking into a huge obstacle that only serves to psyche them out. Don’t be like that. Seek out native speakers for an informal language exchange, enroll in a course, or take classes online. TIP 4 SUBSCRIBE TO PODCASTS (IN ENGLISH) Like humor? Politics? Blogging? Cooking? With topics covering every interest possible, there are English-speaking podcasts out there for you. Subscribe to a few and listen or watch while going to school or work. At first, you might find the native accents difficult, but stick with it and you’ll soon start to understand what you hear (as well as learning lots of new vocabulary from a native speaker!) 56. Which of the following is the best heading for TIP 1? A. START WITH READING WHAT YOU REALLY NEED B. USE CONTEXTUAL CLUES TO BUILD YOUR VOCABULARY C. READ ALL THE PRINTED MATERIALS YOU CAN BUY D. READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON 57. The phrase “psyche them out” is closest in meaning to ______ A. make them discouraged B. slow down their progress C. relieve their stress D. affect their fluency 58. Which of the following strategies is NOT suggested by the author? A. Learning words through repeated exposure in different contexts. B. Using technology to instantly translate any unknown word. C. Building vocabulary by reading things you enjoy. D. Overcoming the fear of speaking by practicing with natives. (B) Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). Skilled at putting up shelves and piecing together furniture, she never pays someone else to do a job she can do herself. She credits(归功) these skills to her late grandfather and builder Derek Lloyd. From the age of six, Terri, now 26, accompanied Derek to work during her school holidays. A day’s work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money. She says: “I’m sure I wasn’t much of a help to start with, painting the rooms and putting down the flooring throughout the house. It took weeks and it was backbreaking(劳累的) work, but I know he was proud of my skills.” Terri, who now rents a house with friends in Wandsworth, South West London, says DIY also saves her from losing any deposit(押金) when a tenancy (租期) comes to an end. She adds: “I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures, so, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.” With millions of people likely to take on DIY projects over that coming weeks, new research shows that more than half of people are planning to make the most of the long, warm summer days to get jobs done. The average spend per project will be around £823. Two thirds of people aim to improve their comfort while at home. Two fifths wish to increase the value of their house. Though DIY has traditionally been seen as a male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge. 59. Which is closest in meaning to “a dab hand” in paragraph 1? A. An artist. B. A winner. C. A specialist. D. A pioneer. 60 Why did Terri’s grandfather give her £5 a day? A. As a birthday gift these years. B. As a treat for her part-time job. C. To support her DIY projects. D. To encourage her to take up a hobby. 61. How did Terri avoid losing the deposit on the house she rented? A. By making it look like before. B. By furnishing and decorating it herself. C. By splitting the rent with a roommate. D. By cancelling the rental agreement(协议). 62. What trend in DIY does the research show? A. It is becoming more costly. B. It is getting more time-consuming. C. It is turning into a seasonal industry. D. It is gaining popularity among females. (C) What is the place of art in a culture of inattention? Recent visitors to the Louvre report that tourists can now spend only a minute in front of the Mona Lisa before being asked to move on. Much of that time, for some of them, is spent taking photographs not even of the painting but of themselves with the painting in the background. One view is that we have democratized (平民化) tourism and gallery-going so much that we have made it effectively impossible to appreciate what we’ve travelled to see. In this oversubscribed society, experience becomes a commodity like any other. There are queues to climb Mount Qomolangma as well as to see famous paintings. Leisure, thus considered, is hard labour, and returning to work becomes a well-earned break from the tough experience. What gets lost in this industrialized haste (加速) is the quality of looking. Think about an extreme example, the late philosopher Richard Wollheim. When he visited the Louvre, he could spend as much as four hours sitting before a painting. The first hour, he claimed, was necessary for misperceptions to be eliminated. It was only then that the picture would begin to disclose itself. This seems unthinkable today, but it is still possible to organize. Even in the busiest museums there are many rooms and many pictures worth hours of contemplation (沉思) which the crowds largely ignore. Sometimes the largest crowds are partly the products of bad management; the Mona Lisa is such a hurried experience today partly because the museum is being reorganized. The Uffizi in Florence, another site of cultural pilgrimage (朝圣), has cut its entry queues down to seven minutes by clever management. And there are some forms of art, those designed to be spectacles as well as objects of contemplation, which can work perfectly well in the face of huge crowds. Olafur Eliasson’s current Tate Modern show, for instance, might seem nothing more than an entertainment, overrun as it is with kids romping (喧嚣地玩耍) in fog rooms and spray mist installations. But it’s more than that: where Eliasson is at his most entertaining, he is at his most serious too, and his disorienting installations bring home the reality of the destructive effects we are having on the planet — not least what we are doing to the glaciers of Eliasson’s beloved Iceland. Marcel Proust, another lover of the Louvre, wrote: “It is only through art that we can escape from ourselves and know how another person sees the universe, whose landscapes would otherwise have remained as unknown as any on the moon.” If any art remains worth seeing, it must lead us to such escapes. But a minute in front of a painting in a hurried crowd won’t do that. 63. Why did the late philosopher Richard Wollheim spend four hours before a picture? A. It takes time to appreciate a piece of art fully. B. It is quite common to misinterpret artistic works. C. The longer people contemplate a picture, the more likely they will enjoy it. D. The more time one spends before a painting, the more valuable one finds it. 64. What does the case of the Uffizi in Florence show? A. Art works in museums should be better taken care of. B. Sites of cultural pilgrimage are always flooded with visitors. C. Good management is key to handling large crowds of visitors. D. Large crowds of visitors cause management problems for museums. 65 What do we learn from Olafur Eliasson’s current Tate Modern show? A. Children learn to appreciate art works most effectively while they are playing. B. It is possible to combine entertainment with appreciation of serious art. C. Art works about the environment appeal most to young children. D. Some forms of art can accommodate huge crowds of visitors. 66. What can art do according to Marcel Proust? A. Enable us to live a much fuller life. B. Allow us to escape the harsh reality. C. Help us to see the world from a different perspective. D. Urge us to explore the unknown domain of the universe. Section C(8’) Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. Time well spent There will always be an endless list of chores to complete and work to do, and a culture of relentless productivity tells us to get to it right away and feel terribly guilty about any time wasted. ___67____. And “wasted” time is, in fact, highly fulfilling and necessary. The problem comes when we spend so long trying to improve productivity. We refuse to take real breaks. We put off sleeping in, or going for a long walk, or reading by the window. Even if we do manage time away from the work, it comes with a looming awareness of the things we should be doing. The experience is weighed down by feelings of guilt. “____68____”, says Michael Guttridge, a psychologist who focuses on workplace behavior. “It’s hard to break out of that and go to the park.” But the downsides are obvious: We end up zoning out while at the computer — looking for distraction on social media, telling ourselves we’re “multitasking” while really spending far longer than necessary on the most basic tasks. Plus, says Guttridge, we’re missing out on the mental and physical benefits of time spent focused on ourselves. “People eat at the desk and get food on the computer — it’s disgusting. They should go for a walk, to the coffee shop, just get away,” he says. “____69____.” ____70____. As Alex Soojung-Kim Pan, author of REST: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, writes in Nautilus, outstanding people including Charles Dickens, Gabriel García Márquez, and Charles Darwin had quite relaxed schedules, working for five hours a day or less. The truth is, work expands to fill the time it’s given and, for most of us, we could spend considerably fewer hours at the office and still get the same amount done. A. However, we don’t necessarily need to work so hard. B. Even Victorian (维多利亚女王时代的) factories had some kind of rest breaks. C. Sometimes even the activities that are meant to be a treat can be spoiled by a sense of responsibility. D. There’s an idea that we must always be available and work all the time. E. But the truth is, a life spent dutifully working around the clock is a dull one indeed. F. And taking time to be totally, gloriously, proudly unproductive will eventually make you better at your job. V. Summary writing (10’) Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible. A Workaholic Economy Although the output per hour of work has more than doubled since 1945, leisure seems reserved largely for the unemployed and underemployed. Those who work full-time spend as much time on the job as they did at the end of World War Ⅱ. In fact, working hours have increased noticeably since 1970. Bookstores now abound with manuals describing how to manage time and cope with stress. There are mainly two reasons for lost leisure. Since 1970, companies have responded to improvements in the business climate by having employees work overtime rather than by hiring extra personnel. Some firms are even downsizing as their profits climb. A host of factors pushes employers to hire fewer workers for more hours and, at the same time, compels workers to spend more time on the job. Most of those incentives(诱因) involve the structure of compensation(报酬). The way salaries and benefits are organized makes it more profitable to ask 40 employees to labor an extra hour each than to hire one more worker to do the same 40-hour job. Once people are on salary, their cost to a firm is the same whether they spend 35 hours a week in the office or 70. Therefore, it is more profitable for employers to work their existing employees harder. For all that employees complain about long hours, they, too, have reasons not to trade money for leisure. “People who work reduced hours pay a huge penalty in career terms,” Bailyn of Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintains. “It’s taken as a negative signal about their commitment to the firm.” He adds that many corporate managers find it difficult to measure the contribution of their employees to a firm’s well-being, so they estimate staff productivity in terms of hours worked. On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college. Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior. Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will pay back invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I’m sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss. Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do. Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you’re willing to work hard. Questions: Whom is the speech aimed at? Why does the speaker give the speech? Which of the following is NOT a tip the speaker share? 14. A. The benefits of walking . B. The importance of keeping fit. C. It prevents people suffering from cancers. A 15. D 16. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot ... you can travel fast or slow. The movement of your feet gets you where you need to go. But it also gets you so much more! Walking is a basic, simple exercise that’s suitable for almost everyone. Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes your heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too. Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well. One in 14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape. Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things. You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk, Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel. Questions: What’s the topic of the passage? Why is walking good for people’s mental health? Which of the following is NOT mentioned about walking in the passage? 17. I’ve been surfing the net for the last few hours. W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure? M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting. W: Well, did you get the information you needed? M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests. W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have a lot more than I started off looking for. M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless. W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time. M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relative information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars. W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone. M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read through what I got on the Internet and start working on my subjects. W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the net myself. M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight. Questions: Why does the man look tired? Why did the man surf the Internet? What’s the woman’s opinion about surfing the Internet? What does the man NOT like about the Internet? II. 21. have been called 22. others 23. how 24. buried 25. which 26. an 27. means 28. Not fitting 29. despite 30. and 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。 根据时间状语for years my whole life可知,使用现在完成时,主语为I,和动词call为被动关系,需用被动语态,助动词用have。故填have been called。 故填how。 故填which。 【26题详解】 考查冠词。句意:他提醒我们,ADHD并不能解释所有与时间管理或动力相关的问题,而且患有ADHD也不是逃避责任的借口。excuse为可数名词,此处表示泛指,且excuse发音以元音音素开头,需用不定冠词an修饰。故填an。 故填Not fitting。 【29题详解】 考查介词。句意同上。空后是名词短语their differences,需用介词引导,表示“尽管”应用介词despite。故填despite。 【30题详解】 考查连词。句意:与你的大脑合作,而非对抗它,这样你的差异就会成为你的天赋。上文是祈使句“Work with your brain, not against it”(与大脑合作,而非对抗),下文是陈述句 “your differences will become your gift”(你的差异会成为天赋);两者构成顺承关系(按前者做,就会产生后者的结果),符合“祈使句 + and + 陈述句”的固定句型。故填and。 Section B(10’) Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. 【答案】31. K 32. H 33. J 34. A 35. B 36. F 37. I 38. D 39. G 40. E 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了多元文化及其对工作的影响。 【31题详解】 考查形容词。句意:这是一个关键的区别。修饰名词difference用形容词,根据“A multilingual salesperson can explain the advantages of a product in other languages, but a multicultural salesperson can motivate foreigners to buy it.”可知此处表示“关键的”,故填K。 【32题详解】 考查动词。句意:外国人一下子就感受到了单一文化的傲慢,并设置了自己的文化壁垒,这可能会有效地阻止单一文化者试图激励他们。此处缺少动词作谓语,根据“Foreigners sense monocultural arrogance at once and set up their own cultural barriers,”可知此处表示“阻止”,故填H。 【33题详解】 考查名词。句意:多元文化是招聘经理在担任国际职位时常常被忽视的一项要求。分析句子结构可知此处缺少名词作表语,根据“that has been neglected too often in hiring managers for international positions.”可知此处表示“要求”,故填J。 【34题详解】 考查名词。句意:你有合适的员工来建立关系网吗?此处缺少名词作动词短语build up的宾语,根据“Even if your company is not a multinational one, chances are you’re in touch with foreign customers or manufacturers”可知此处指“网络、关系网”,故填A。 【35题详解】 考查动词。句意:当客户要求我们为一个新的泛欧销售或管理职位找到合适的人选时,我首先要求他们详细说明他们理想的候选人应该具备的资格。ask sb to sth表示“要求某人做某事”,此处需要填动词原形,根据“the qualifications their ideal candidate would have.”可知此处表示“详细说明”,故填B。 【36题详解】 考查形容词。句意:大多数情况下,他们列出的素质与国内职位的要求相同,但另外要求新任经理英语、德语和法语流利,足以应付传真和电子邮件。修饰名词requirement用形容词,根据“Most often they list the same qualities they would want for a domestic position, but with the”可知此处指“额外的”,故填F。 【37题详解】 考查动词。句意:当然,确定候选人的多元文化比检查他们的语言技能要困难得多,但这也是成功的一个重要因素。空前的to为不定式符号,此处需要填动词原形,根据“candidates multiculturalism than it is to check their language skills”可知此处表示“确定”,故填I。 此处缺少形容词作表语,根据“about Mexican restaurants and markets being dirty and unsafe.”可知此处表示“不安的”,故填E。 III. Luna was last seen alive in September off the coast of Nova Scotia. Scientists had been tracking the 40-year-old whale for decades. Those tracking him knew every scar and took ____42____ of new ones whenever they saw him. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. 【答案】56. D 57. A 58. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇应用文,文章给出了四条快速学英语的实用建议:大量阅读、主动记词、开口与真人交流、订阅播客,并强调兴趣与坚持并重。 【56题详解】 主旨大意题。根据TIP 1段落“Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your social media feed: if it's in English, read it. (经典文学、平装书、报纸、网站、邮件、你的社媒动态:只要是英文,就读。)”可知,核心就是“见什么读什么”。D项“READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON! (把你所能拿到的英文材料统统读一遍!)”准确概括。故选D项。 【57题详解】 词句猜测题。根据TIP 3段落“A lot of would-be English speakers have turned talking into a huge obstacle that only serves to psyche them out. (许多英语学习者把开口说英语变成巨大障碍,这只会让他们psyche them out。)”可知,很多英语学习者遇到了障碍,这些障碍会让他们感到气馁,所以此处psyche them out意为“使胆怯/泄气”。A项“make them discouraged”最接近。故选A项。 【58题详解】 细节理解题。原文第四段指出“Seek out native speakers for an informal language exchange, enroll in a course, or take classes online. (寻找母语者进行非正式语言交流,报名课程或上网课。)”鼓励与真人练习口语;第三段强调“Whenever you hear or read a new word or expression, write it down in context: that is, in a sentence and with its meaning noted. (每当你听到或读到一个新单词或表达时,把它放在语境中记下来:也就是写进一个句子,并标注它的含义。)”倡导主动记词;第二段“Classic literature, paperbacks, newspapers, websites, emails, your social media feed: if it's in English, read it. (经典文学、平装书、报纸、网站、邮件、你的社媒动态:只要是英文,就读。)”提倡大量阅读兴趣材料;全文均未提及“用技术即时翻译任何未知单词”,此做法与作者主张的主动积累词汇相悖。故选B项。 (B) Terri Bolton is a dab hand when it comes to DIY (do-it-yourself). 【答案】59. C 60. B 61. A 62. A day’s work was rewarded with £5 in pocket money.(现年26岁的特丽从6岁起,就会在假期跟着德里克去工地干活,干一天活能得到5英镑零花钱)”可知,祖父给特丽5英镑,是作为她假期打零工的报酬。故选B项。 【61题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“She adds: “I’ve moved house many times and I always like to personalise my room and put up pictures, so, it’s been useful to know how to cover up holes and repaint a room to avoid any charges when I’ve moved out.”.(她补充道:“我搬过好多次家,而且一直都喜欢按自己的心意布置房间、挂些照片。所以,学会填补墙上的孔洞、重新粉刷房间就很有用了,这样我搬走的时候就不会被扣款”)”可知,特丽通过把房子恢复成入住前的原样,来避免押金被扣。故选A项。 根据第四段中的“Though DIY has traditionally been seen as a male hobby, the research shows it is women now leading the charge.(尽管DIY传统上被看作是男性的爱好,但研究显示,如今女性正成为这项活动的主力军)”可知,研究揭示的DIY趋势是:它在女性群体中越来越受欢迎。故选D项。 (C) What is the place of art in a culture of inattention? A 64. C 65. B 66. 根据第三段中“Think about an extreme example, the late philosopher Richard Wollheim. When he visited the Louvre, he could spend as much as four hours sitting before a painting. The first hour, he claimed, was necessary for misperceptions to be eliminated. It was only then that the picture would begin to disclose itself.(想一个极端的例子:已故哲学家Richard Wollheim。当他参观卢浮宫时,能在一幅画前静坐长达四小时。他认为,第一个小时是消除误解的必要时间。只有在那之后,这幅画才会开始展现它的内涵)”可知,充分欣赏一件艺术作品需要花费时间。故选A。 根据第三段中“The Uffizi in Florence, another site of cultural pilgrimage (朝圣), has cut its entry queues down to seven minutes by clever management.(佛罗伦萨的Uffizi美术馆是另一处文化朝圣地,它通过巧妙的管理,将入场排队时间缩短到了7分钟)”可知,良好的管理是应对大量游客的关键。 根据第四段中“Olafur Eliasson’s current Tate Modern show, for instance, might seem nothing more than an entertainment, overrun as it is with kids romping (喧嚣地玩耍) in fog rooms and spray mist installations. But it’s more than that: where Eliasson is at his most entertaining, he is at his most serious too, and his disorienting installations bring home the reality of the destructive effects we are having on the planet — not least what we are doing to the glaciers of Eliasson’s beloved Iceland.(比如Olafur Eliasson当前在泰特现代美术馆的展览,看起来或许不过是一场娱乐活动——展厅里满是在雾室和喷雾装置中喧闹玩耍的孩子。但它不止于此:在Eliasson最具娱乐性的作品里,也藏着最严肃的内核,且他那些让人迷失方向的装置作品,让人们真切意识到人类对地球造成的破坏性影响——尤其是我们对Eliasson深爱的冰岛冰川所做的一切)”可推知,娱乐和严肃艺术的欣赏是可以结合的。故选B。 【66题详解】 细节理解题。根据第五段中“Marcel Proust, another lover of the Louvre, wrote: “It is only through art that we can escape from ourselves and know how another person sees the universe, whose landscapes would otherwise have remained as unknown as any on the moon.” (另一位卢浮宫的爱好者Marcel Proust写道:“唯有通过艺术,我们才能摆脱自我,了解他人眼中的宇宙;若非如此,那些宇宙图景会像月球上的景象一样,始终不为我们所知。”)”可知,艺术能帮助我们从不同的视角看待世界。故选C。 Section C(8’) Directions: Read the passage carefully. E 68. D 69. B 70. 【67题详解】 根据上文“There will always be an endless list of chores to complete and work to do, and a culture of relentless productivity tells us to get to it right away and feel terribly guilty about any time wasted. (总会有无穷无尽的家务活要完成、工作要做,一种无休止追求效率的文化告诉我们要立刻行动,并且为任何浪费的时间感到极度内疚。)”及下文“And “wasted” time is, in fact, highly fulfilling and necessary.(而事实上,所谓的“浪费”时间是非常有意义且必要的。)” E选项“But the truth is, a life spent dutifully working around the clock is a dull one indeed.(但事实是,尽职尽责、全天候工作的人生确实是枯燥乏味的。)” 【68题详解】 根据下文心理学家Michael Guttridge的话“It’s hard to break out of that and go to the park.(很难摆脱这种状态去公园走走。)” D选项“There’s an idea that we must always be available and work all the time.(有一种观点认为,我们必须随时待命、一直工作。)”直接点明这一主流观念,“always be available and work all the time”正是“难以摆脱去公园”的原因,与下文形成“观点+阐释”的逻辑关系。故选D项。 【69题详解】 根据上文Guttridge的建议“They should go for a walk, to the coffee shop, just get away, (他们应该去散散步、去咖啡店,只是暂时离开工作。)” B选项“Even Victorian factories had some kind of rest breaks.(即使是维多利亚女王时代的工厂也有某种形式的休息时间。)” 【70题详解】 根据下文“As Alex Soojung-Kim Pan, author of REST: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, writes in Nautilus, outstanding people including Charles Dickens, Gabriel García Márquez, and Charles Darwin had quite relaxed schedules, working for five hours a day or less. The truth is, work expands to fill the time it’s given and, for most of us, we could spend considerably fewer hours at the office and still get the same amount done. A选项“However, we don’t necessarily need to work so hard.(然而,我们并不一定需要工作这么努力。)”直接点明主题,“don’t necessarily need to work so hard”与下文“relaxed schedules”、“spend considerably fewer hours”形成完美对应,起到统领全段的作用。故选A项。 V. Employees know this, and they adjust their behavior accordingly. 71.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】People actually work more hours than before despite the increased productivity. On one hand, it’s because the payment distribution system makes it economical for companies to have employees work overtime than hiring more people. On the other hand, employees tend to work long hours because their working time is linked to their contribution to the firm. VI. I’m writing to offer some practical suggestions on how to enrich our school’s after-school life, which I believe will make our campus life more colorful and meaningful. First, our school can organize more club activities, such as a debate club and a photography club. This not only allows us to develop our hobbies but also helps us make more friends with the same interest. Second, holding monthly sports meetings or outdoor activities like hiking can relax our minds after long hours of study and improve our physical health. What’s more, inviting experts to give lectures on career planning or art appreciation can broaden our horizons and add more fun to our daily life. I hope my suggestions will be taken into consideration. I’m looking forward to a more wonderful after-school life in our school. Employees know this, and they adjust their behavior accordingly. 71.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ VI. VII. Guided writing (25’) 76. Dear Editor, I’m Li Hua, a Senior 2 student.
