B
Earlier this year, we learned from older adults that music serves as a powerful coping (应对) mechanism and source of escapism, with other studies also noting its role in providing companionship. This led us to question whether music’s impact on imagination could be scientifically proven. Can music truly be good company?
Listening to music often causes mental imagery — simulating scenarios (模拟场景) not physically present. Research indicates that 77% of online music listeners, 73% of lab participants, and 83% of concert-goers experience such imagery. To explore further, we conducted experiments using a scene from the video game Journey, asking participants to imagine the journey’s continuation. They rated their imagination’s vividness, distance, and time traveled, with music generally enhancing these aspects compared to silence.
Music not only shapes the vividness of participants’ imagination but also the content of their imaginations. Complex stories emerge, often sharing similarities among those from the same cultural background. Heroic music, for instance, inspires uplifting themes. New events in these imagined stories match the patterns of musical tension.
Our latest study specifically explored whether music gives rise to imagined social interactions. We had 600 participants perform the imaginary journey task with or without Italian, Spanish, or Swedish folk music, with or without lyrics (歌词), and among native and non-native speakers. Natural language processing revealed social interaction as the dominant topic in imagined journeys, especially while listening to music, regardless of lyrics’ comprehension or presence.
To visualize these imagined journeys, we employed a generative AI system, Stable Diffusion, changing text descriptions into images. The results, supported by human-conducted analyses, showed three times more social interactions in music-inspired journeys.
Finally, when presenting these images to another group, they could distinguish between music-inspired and silent-imagined content, but only when exposed to the same music. This suggests a shared understanding, or “theory of mind,” of what others might imagine while listening to music. Our findings collectively confirm that music can indeed be good company, shaping and enriching our imaginations.
24. Why did the researchers use a scene from the video game Journey?
A To explore how music affects imagination. B. To prove music’s role in a video game.
C. To show the popularity of Journey. D. To test participants’ creative skills.
25. What conclusion can we draw from Paragraph 3?
A. Music has little influence on story complexity.
B. Lyrics are essential for inspiring imaginative stories.
C. Musical tension leads to negative events in imagination.
D. Cultural background affects how people interpret heroic music.
26. What was the main purpose of using Stable Diffusion in the experiment?
A. To replace human participants with AI completely.
B. To test whether AI enjoys listening to different types of music.
C. To compare human creativity against machine-generated content.
D. To visually represent participants’ imagined journeys for analysis.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Developing Intelligence: The Power of Music
B. The Impact of Music on Culture
C. Music: Good Company for the Imagination
D. The Development of Different Music in Europe
A 25. D 26. D 27. C

根据第二段中“To explore further, we conducted experiments using a scene from the video game Journey, asking participants to imagine the journey’s continuation. They rated their imagination’s vividness, distance, and time traveled, with music generally enhancing these aspects compared to silence.(为了进一步探索,我们使用电子游戏《风之旅人》中的一个场景进行了实验,要求参与者想象旅程的延续。他们评估了想象的生动性、距离感和时间跨度,结果发现音乐通常比静默更能增强这些方面)”可知,研究者使用游戏场景是为了创造一个引导参与者想象的特定情境,以便在后续实验中对比音乐与静默环境下,参与者想象力的各项指标(如生动性等)是否存在差异,从而探究音乐对想象力的影响。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Music not only shapes the vividness of participants’ imagination but also the content of their imaginations. Complex stories emerge, often sharing similarities among those from the same cultural background.(音乐不仅塑造参与者想象的生动性,也塑造了他们想象的内容。复杂的故事会出现,并且通常来自同一文化背景的人会拥有相似的想象)”可知,来自同一文化背景的人会拥有相似的想象,所以文化背景会影响人们对音乐的理解和想象。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“To visualize these imagined journeys, we employed a generative AI system, Stable Diffusion, changing text descriptions into images. The results, supported by human-conducted analyses, showed three times more social interactions in music-inspired journeys.(为了将这些想象中的旅程可视化,我们运用了生成式人工智能系统Stable Diffusion,将文字描述转化为图像。在人工分析的支持下,结果显示,由音乐启发的旅程中所描绘的社会互动场景,数量达到了其他类型的三倍之多)”可知,使用Stable Diffusion的主要目的是将参与者想象的旅程(以文字形式描述)转化为可视化的图像,以便进行后续的分析。故选D项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开篇“Can music truly be good company?(音乐是否真的是良好的伴侣?)” C项“Music: Good Company for the Imagination(音乐:想象力的良好陪伴)”准确地概括了全文主旨,适合作文章标题。故选C项。

Passengers of a superyacht (豪华游艇) caused a large wildfire on the charming beach of Saint Nicholas on the Greek island of Hydra in the late hours of June 21.
The individuals who were near the beach of the beautiful Greek island were seen by people on land throwing fireworks from their ship at around 10:45 pm local time. This seemingly innocent and fun activity, however, ended up setting the surrounding forest area on fire.
According to Fire Service authorities from the island, the fire began burning in a particularly difficult-to-access location of Hydra with no road infrastructure
Luckily, the centre of the incident was far from any urban settlements and villages. Firefighters approached the site using Coast Guard ships in an attempt to put out the fire from the sea. Many volunteer firefighters also joined the effort to contain the large flames and prevent them from spreading further inland. This could have had destructive consequences for the beautiful Greek island of Hydra.
Late on June 22, the Greek Fire Service announced that a total of thirteen people had been arrested, accused of causing a wildfire in the forested area on the island of Hydra. The individuals are expected to be on trial. The island of Hydra belongs administratively to Piraeus, a port city in the region of Attica to which Athens belongs.
Greek media reported that all those arrested were crew members of the superyacht. It is available for summer charter(包租)at €249,000 per week, according to several superyacht dealers online.
“We are indignant that some people so irresponsibly throw fireworks into a pine forest,” Hydra’s mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, told Greek broadcaster ERT. There was also criticism on social media, “Rich people with more money than brains,” wrote one person.
28. Why was it difficult for the firefighters to get close to the fire?
A. The fire was too fierce.
B. The fire broke out late at night.
C. Coast Guard vessels weren’t available.
D. The road to the site didn’t exist at all.
29. What does the underlined word “indignant” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Cross. B. Indifferent. C. Embarrassed. D. Impatient.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Piraeus is an inland city in Attica.
B. Passengers of the yacht were all arrested.
C. Wealthy people are not necessarily socially responsible.
D. Throwing fireworks around is an innocent and fun activity.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To inform an accident. B. To call for actions to take.
C. To give some advice to follow. D. To persuade to believe the truth.
D 29. A 30. C 31. A

To appreciate the boldness of Dubai (迪拜), you could go skiing. You put on a thick coat, pull on your gloves — and then marvel at what strong air-conditioning can do. At the exit, you can buy a souvenir T-shirt. A cartoon thermometer in Celsius announces, “I went from +50 to -8!”
Indoor skiing in the desert has become a symbol of Dubai’s status as a wealthy, modern metropolis (大都市). Originally a small fishing village, Dubai’ s fortunes changed forever with the discovery of oil in the 1960s. Since then, it has evolved to become the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, with over three million residents, huge shopping malls, and a hundred high-rise towers. But the rapid growth has come at a price. By 2006, Dubai had one of the largest ecological footprints in the world. But now it is making some big changes.
To reduce its dependence on cars and lower its emission, Dubai has invested in solar energy, green buildings, and a comprehensive public transportation system. All new buildings must meet strict energy regulations and use solar panels for water heating. Smart lighting and cooling systems must switch off when no people are present in a room. “The leadership has recognized that the growth of the economy is not sustainable without taking action on emissions,” says Tanzeed Alam, a climate and energy specialist.
The most striking development can be found where the city’s suburbs meet the desert. Unlike much of Dubai, the Sustainable City to the south feels more like a close-knit village community. About five hundred low-rise houses are distributed along attractive, tree-lined streets. They all face north, away from direct sunlight, and are close together to provide a natural shade. Each building has reflective windows and wall paint, which reduce the heat absorbed from the sun. Rooftop solar panels and energy-saving lights contribute to the community’s energy efficiency. As a result, residents of the Sustainable City now consume 50 percent less energy than people living in other parts of Dubai.
Dubai’s leaders hope that Sustainable City will become a model for the future. By 2050, the government intends to obtain 75 percent of the city’s energy from renewable sources — mainly solar. It also wants to have the smallest ecological footprint in the world. If successful, even skiing in the desert could become an environmentally sustainable reality.
32. What was the problem after Dubai’s transformation into a giant city?
A. The indoor skiing as a symbol of wealth.
B. The population explosion for urban development.
C. The crowded city with shopping malls and high-rises.
D. The huge emission as a result of rapid development.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The plan for a smart city.
B. The blue-print of the future city.
C. The measures for lower emission.
D. The government’s attitude to emission.
34. Which of the following best explains “striking” in paragraph 4?
A. Noticeable. B. Isolated. C. Gradual. D. Uniform.
35. Which words can best describe the Dubai government?
A. Bold and tough. B. Cautious and hesitant.
C. Skeptical and indifferent. D. Determined and devoted.
D 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据前文“An employee of a tech company, Laura Mae Martin, sent an email to her co-workers: What if for six weeks straight, you spent one night per week without technology gadgets (小装置)? (劳拉·梅·马丁是一家科技公司的员工,她给同事们发了一封电子邮件:如果连续六周,你每周有一个晚上没有科技产品,你会怎么样?)”可知,此处是一个提问,后文应是对此的回答,G项“然后,她收到了大量渴望离开手机休息一下的回复”符合语境,其中she指的是Laura Mae Martin。故选G项。
【37题详解】
根据后文“Pay attention to when you have an urge to lift your phone or open social media. When you become aware of it, simply ask yourself, “Do I really need to do this right now?” Asking the question may help you resist the desire to check your device.(当你有想要拿起手机或打开社交媒体的冲动时,要注意。当你意识到这一点时,简单地问自己:“我真的需要现在就做这件事吗?”问这个问题可能会帮助你抵制查看手机的欲望)”可知。本段主要讲要从简单的问题问起。故A选项“从一个简单的问题开始”符合语境。故选A项。
以及后文“But if you’re trying to spend less time staring at your screens, 10-or 15-minute breaks might be a more practical option. You might take a quick walk, or read a book.(但如果你想减少盯着屏幕的时间,休息10到15分钟可能是一个更实际的选择。你可以散个步,或者读本书。)”可知,本段讲述通过一些休息时间来减少使用电子产品的时间,D项“远离电子设备的时间太长可能是不可能的”是对前文的详细说明,并引出下文。故选D项。
【39题详解】
根据前文“One way to create harmony with your technology is to limit your phone use when you’re on the move. Head out for a walk? Turn off your notifications(通知). Go to grab a coffee? Leave your phone on your desk.(与科技和谐相处的一种方法是在移动中限制手机的使用。出去散步?关掉通知。去喝杯咖啡?把手机放在桌子上)”可知,选项承接上文说明上述行为产生的作用。故B选项“它可能会让你专注于现在”符合语境。故选B项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“Make the technology work for you. To develop a healthy relationship with technology, you need to be in control of it and not the other way around.(让技术为你工作。为了与科技发展健康的关系,你需要控制它,而不是相反。)”可知,此部分讨论如何使技术为你服务,而不是被技术控制,F项“把你的设备想象成一个你决定如何使用的工具”是对前文的进一步说明,并和后文“Make it work for you, not against you. Remember it’s the intention behind how you’re using it that really makes the big difference.(让它为你工作,而不是反对你。记住,你如何使用它背后的意图才是真正产生巨大差异的。)”相呼应。故选F项。

The dark sky, filled with angry, swirling clouds, reflected Greg Ridley's mood as he sat on the stoop(门廊)of his building. His father's voice came to him again, first reading the headmaster's letter, then lecturing endlessly about his poor efforts in maths.
“I had to leave school when I was thirteen. That's a year younger than you are now. If I'd had half the chances you have, I' d...And you want to play basketball? That must be some kind of a joke. Now you just get into your room and hit those books.
It was beginning to cool. Soon large drops of rain splashed onto his jeans. Down the block there was an abandoned house. Without much thought, Greg made a dash across the street and entered a room. Suddenly he heard a man's voice behind him.“What are you doing here?"
“Who are you?" Greg hardly recognized his own voice.
“I'm Lemon Brown," came the answer.
He was an old man. It didn't seem that he was dangerous. “You aren't looking for my treasure, are you?” he asked.
“No. It is raining out." Greg answered, smiling. “You have a treasure?"
"Every man has a treasure." Lemon Brown said, “You want to see mine?"
“If you want to show it to me," Greg shrugged.
The old man carefully untied the strings, and revealed some yellowed newspaper clippings (剪报).
Then he started telling the story of his life. He was a famous blues singer in the past. His wife died young, and his only son went abroad to work.
“I gave him these newspaper clippings that told him who I was, and where he came from. One time I came home, there was a letter saying that he got killed in an accident. It broke my heart. They sent back these clippings. That was my treasure, and when I gave it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure."
Lemon Brown put his rags in place and looked out of the window.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
“You get on out of here and get yourself home," said Lemon Brown.

When Greg was walking in the street, the night had warmed and the rain had stopped.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“You get on out of here and get yourself home,” said Lemon Brown. Nodding his head, Greg followed the old man silently. When they reached the front door, the old man looked out first, saw the street was clear and told Greg to hurry home. Greg opened his arms and hugged the old man tightly, “Take care of the treasure of yours.” “That I’ll do,” said Lemon Brown, the wrinkles about his eyes suggested a smile. Then Greg walked into the darkness, the old man watching him from behind.
When Greg was walking in the street, the night had warmed and the rain had stopped. Greg didn’t even want to think how late it was. He thought ahead what his father would say and wondered if he should tell him about Lemon Brown. He thought about it until he reached his stoop and decided against it. Lemon Brown would be all right with his memories and his treasure. Greg pushed the button over the bell marked Ridley, thought of the lecture he knew his father would give him, and smiled.

A. To explore how music affects imagination.
A To replace human participants with AI completely.
B. To test whether AI enjoys listening to different types of music.
C To compare human creativity against machine-generated content.
D. To visually represent participants’ imagined journeys for analysis.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Developing Intelligence: The Power of Music
B. The Impact of Music on Culture
C. Music: Good Company for the Imagination
D. The Development of Different Music in Europe

B Passengers of the yacht were all arrested.

C The measures for lower emission.
D. The government’s attitude to emission.
34. Which of the following best explains “striking” in paragraph 4?
A. Noticeable. B. Isolated. C. Gradual. D. Uniform.
35. Which words can best describe the Dubai government?
A. Bold and tough. B. Cautious and hesitant.
C. Skeptical and indifferent. D. Determined and devoted.
