I’d been invited to help organize a charity party. It would be nice to get out of the house to make a difference to others’ lives. I looked in the mirror and nodded my head in approval. It was going to be a great day!
After everything was done, we went to an all-you-can-eat buffet (自助餐). We arrived and I headed straight for my favorite section — the salad. I loaded my plate with lettuce, cauliflower, and cucumbers. As I reached for the salad dressing, an elderly man bumped (撞) into me. “Oh, I’m sorry. Excuse me,” I said pleasantly. I hadn’t moved so I knew it was he who had bumped into me. I felt a little sorry for him. I didn’t want him to feel bad so I apologized first.
“I guess you just couldn’t wait to get to the food, could you? Look at your size,” he answered. My mouth dropped open and I no longer felt sorry for him.
A million thoughts ran through my head. Should I try to shame him by telling him that I had gained weight due to a side effect of antidepressants Would it matter to him that I hadn’t always looked like this... that I had once been thin? And then it hit me... Did it matter to me? I immediately ran away from him.
That evening I played the old man’s words over and over again in my mind. I was finally feeling better after years of antidepressant treatment. Sure I had gained some weight, but I had gained something else along the way. I’d become much more caring toward other hurting hearts. I gained insight into the people and things that are truly important in life. It felt good to feel good again. I would not allow this complete stranger to steal my joy. His words said more about him than they did about me. For the second time that day, I felt sorry for the old man.
4. Why did the author apologize to the elderly man first?
A. She wanted him to feel comfortable. B. She knocked him down in a hurry.
C. She was required to do that by him. D. She was uncertain if she was wrong.
5. How did the author react to the old man’s words?
A. She explained why she had gained weight.
B. She shamed him and walked away at once.
C. She was more than shocked and hurt.
D. She felt annoyed and shouted at him.
6. What can be inferred about the author?
A. She rarely goes out to social events.
B. She once went through a tough period of time.
C She cares little about what others think of her.
D. She hadn’t known the side effects of antidepressants.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The importance of helping others.
B. The need to fight for fairness.
C. The struggle of being overweight.
D. The journey to self-acceptance.
A 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据第二段中“I didn’t want him to feel bad so I apologized first.(我不想让他感到难过,所以我先道歉了。)” 故选A。
根据第三段““I guess you just couldn’t wait to get to the food, could you? Look at your size,” he answered. My mouth dropped open and I no longer felt sorry for him.(“我看你是急着要吃东西吧?瞧瞧你这体型。”他说道。我惊得张大了嘴巴,对他的同情也瞬间消失了。)”和第四段“A million thoughts ran through my head. Should I try to shame him by telling him that I had gained weight due to a side effect of antidepressants (抗抑郁药)? Would it matter to him that I hadn’t always looked like this... that I had once been thin? And then it hit me... Did it matter to me? I immediately ran away from him.(无数个念头在我脑海中闪过。我要不要告诉他,我体重增加是因为服用抗抑郁药的副作用,以此让他感到羞愧呢?我告诉他我以前并不总是这样……我曾经很瘦,这对他来说重要吗?然后我突然想到……这对我重要吗?我立刻从他身边跑开了。)”可推知,作者对老人的话感到非常震惊和受伤。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I was finally feeling better after years of antidepressant treatment.(经过多年的抗抑郁治疗,我终于感觉好多了。)”
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“I would not allow this complete stranger to steal my joy. His words said more about him than they did about me.(我不会让这个完全陌生的人偷走我的快乐。他的话更多地反映了他自己而不是我。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者从被老人嘲讽到最终选择自我接纳,拒绝让陌生人破坏自己心情的心路历程,因此D项“The journey to self-acceptance(自我接纳之旅)”最适合作文章标题。故选D。
Plastic is everywhere — and yet some people may be surprised at how much they actually wear. It has been woven into our sportswear, sweaters, swimsuits and stretchy socks. When they are worn, washed and put through the dryer, they shed (掉落) tiny plastic fiber (纤维) into water and air nonstop. A single wash can release millions which are so tiny that wastewater treatment factories can’t collect them all. They wind up in local waterways that connect to the ocean. Sea animals eat them, and that can pass plastic to larger animals and humans.
Even natural fabrics shed fibers and have chemicals that can spread into the environment. But polyester (聚酯纤维) is the most widely used fiber on Earth, and along with other synthetic fibers accounts for about two-thirds of production worldwide.
“Everyone who wears and washes clothing is part of this problem but everyone who wears and washes clothing can be part of the solutions,” said Rachel Z. Miller, founder of Vermont-based Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean. They shed less when put in cold water in full loads (负载), on a shorter cycle, then hung to dry. Other options include putting clothing in a washing bag that catches fibers and adding filters to washers to catch plastic fibers.
More challenging is that cloth needs to be produced in a more green way. Some big brands are testing their cloth to understand why fibers shed and transform cloth production.
“It’s up to clothing manufacturing companies to prevent it at the source since cleaning up microplastics in the environment is not yet possible,” said a manager of a big clothing manufacturing company. The company has worked with suppliers to choose cloth to finish their clothing in ways that reduce shedding.
“There’s a whole lot of smart people, not just understanding the problem, but also looking for solutions all the way through the producing cycle and use phase,” said Matt Dwyer, vice president of global product footprint. “Compared to 10 years ago, it’s a whole new world.”
8. What is the main problem discussed in the first paragraph?
A. The difficulty of recycling plastic products.
B. The pollution of microplastics from clothing.
C. The influence of plastic fiber on sea animals.
D. The quality of clothes made of microplastics.
9. Why is polyester particularly mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To prove it contains harmful chemicals.
B. To show it will be rarely used in future.
C. To stress it can replace natural material.
D. To imply it brings lots of microplastics.
10. How can we help reduce the microplastics from clothes?
A. By washing clothes with hot water.
B. By avoiding washing fewer at a time.
C. By air drying clothes after washing it.
D. By washing clothes as long as possible.
11. What is Matt Dwyer’s attitude to the progress of solving the problem?
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Annoyed.
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第一段“Plastic is everywhere — and yet some people may be surprised at how much they actually wear.
第二段“Even natural fabrics shed fibers and have chemicals that can spread into the environment. But polyester (聚酯纤维) is the most widely used fiber on Earth, and along with other synthetic fibers accounts for about two-thirds of production worldwide. (即使是天然织物也会脱落纤维,并含有可以扩散到环境中的化学物质。但聚酯纤维是地球上使用最广泛的纤维,与其他合成纤维一起占全球产量的三分之二左右。)”可推知,聚酯纤维被特别提及是因为其广泛使用意味着它产生了大量的微塑料。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“They shed less when put in cold water in full loads (负载), on a shorter cycle, then hung to dry. Other options include putting clothing in a washing bag that catches fibers and adding filters to washers to catch plastic fibers. (当它们满负载放入冷水中,以较短的周期,然后挂起来晾干时,它们的脱落较少。其他选择包括把衣服放在洗衣袋里,这样可以捕获纤维,在洗衣机上增加过滤器,这样可以捕获塑料纤维。)”可知,用冷水、满负载、短周期模式洗涤衣物并悬挂晾干,可以减少衣物上的微塑料纤维脱落。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““There’s a whole lot of smart people, not just understanding the problem, but also looking for solutions all the way through the producing cycle and use phase,” said Matt Dwyer, vice president of global product footprint. “Compared to 10 years ago, it's a whole new world.” (全球产品足迹副总裁马特•德怀尔(Matt Dwyer)表示:“有很多聪明人,他们不仅了解问题,而且还在整个生产周期和使用阶段寻找解决方案。”“与10年前相比,这是一个全新的世界。”)”可知,Matt Dwyer认为有很多聪明人不仅能够理解问题,还会寻找解决方案,现在的情况与十年前相比已是全新的局面。这体现了他对解决问题的进展持乐观的态度。故选A。
Whether you believe a customer is always right probably depends on which side of the counter you’re on. For shoppers, a shopkeeper quick to fix mistakes and listen to concerns is great. But for shopkeepers, consumers abuse (滥用) this can be tiresome. Is a customer right when returning a half-eaten sandwich? There is no easy answer.
The origin of this expression has several explanations. The earliest printed mention dates back to 1905, from Marshall Field, a Chicago department store operator. The Boston Globe called him a “merchant (商业) prince” and noted his business principles. Field insisted his employees respect and obey his practices, like sticking to “the customer is always right”. It’s possible the Boston Globe author owed a common proverb (格言) to him.
César Ritz, a hotel owner with properties in Paris and London, was also a proponent of a similar idea of “the customer is never wrong” in 1908. Another person, a manager under Field, is also linked to the phrase. He might have come up with it, or Field might have adopted it from him. In 1909, the manager opened his London store. His good manners to customers were famous. Once, he learned of a woman who believed a coat cost 25 pence rather than 25 pounds: He let her buy it for the lesser amount.
However, some find the phrase infantilizing (当小孩看待), arguing that customers can quite frequently be wrong and that no store should accommodate unreasonable shoppers. Even the manager’s store turned away in 1936, stating “The customer is not quite always right. There is such a thing, very seldom, as the unreasonable customer...We observe our old proverb that the customer is always right, and at the same time we relieve ourselves of a possibly impossible position by adding the two words ‘almost always’.”
12. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph?
A. To present a debatable business saying.
B. To criticize shopkeepers’ service aims.
C. To share a personal shopping experience.
D. To explain how to get on with customers.
13. What did Marshall Field do?
A. He first published his business principles.
B. He once contributed to the Boston Globe.
C. He demanded his workers to follow his rules.
D. He protested that customers are always right.
14. What does the underlined word “proponent” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Critic. B. Analyst. C. Inventor. D. Supporter.
15. What happened to the store of the manager under Field in 1936?
A. It received complaint for its service.
B. It adjusted the old principles a little.
C. It agreed to serve difficult customers.
D. It totally gave up its former belief.
A 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“Whether you believe a customer is always right probably depends on which side of the counter you’re on. For shoppers, a shopkeeper quick to fix mistakes and listen to concerns is great. But for shopkeepers, consumers abuse (滥用) this can be tiresome. Is a customer right when returning a half-eaten sandwich? There is no easy answer. (你是否相信顾客永远是对的,可能取决于你站在柜台的哪一边。对于购物者来说,店主能迅速纠正错误并倾听他们的担忧是很好的。但对于店主来说,消费者的滥用可能会令人厌烦。顾客把吃了一半的三明治退回来对吗?没有简单的答案。)”可知,作者通过对比购物者与店主的不同视角、提出争议性问题,引出“顾客永远是对的”这一有争议的商业说法。故选A。
根据第二段中“Field insisted his employees respect and obey his practices, like sticking to ‘the customer is always right’. (菲尔德坚持要求员工尊重并遵守他的经营方式,比如坚守‘顾客永远是对的’这一原则。)”可知,马歇尔・菲尔德要求员工遵守他的规则。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“César Ritz, a hotel owner with properties in Paris and London, was also a proponent of a similar idea of ‘the customer is never wrong’ in 1908. (1908 年,在巴黎和伦敦拥有酒店产业的塞萨尔・里兹,也是‘顾客永远没有错’这一类似理念的 proponent。)”结合前文马歇尔・菲尔德坚守“顾客永远是对的”可知,此处similar idea表明里兹与菲尔德态度一致,César Ritz应是该理念的支持者。由此猜测,划线词意为“支持者”,与supporter同义。故选D。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Even the manager’s store turned away in 1936, stating “The customer is not quite always right. There is such a thing, very seldom, as the unreasonable customer...We observe our old proverb that the customer is always right, and at the same time we relieve ourselves of a possibly impossible position by adding the two words ‘almost always’.”
Sometimes, we get so busy that we end up losing connection with ourselves, others, or the world around us. Here are some ways to help you avoid being a little "off".
Practice mindfulness
Adding some mindfulness into your day can really help you recenter. This doesn’t mean you have to take an hour to meditate (冥想) each day. ___16___. Notice the way your food smells and how the temperature and textures of it feel when you take a bite. This simple act can turn one of your daily necessities into a way to connect better with your own body and mind.
___17___
Tending to your own needs can help reset your emotional compass. There are so many ways to practice self-care. ___18___. For others, it might be a nice walk with a pet, or a warm bath with beautiful music. Find a way that works best for you, but it’s important that whatever activity you choose is focused on caring for yourself.
Manage your stress and anxiety
___19___. Naturally, stress and anxiety build up unnoticed. Proactive management is crucial for maintaining emotional balance. Integrate simple, effective practices like walking, quiet reflection or even deep breathing exercises into your routine. These habits can work wonders on regulating stress, developing a greater sense of connection and enjoyment in daily life.
Master your sleep
Quality sleep is fundamental to feeling connected. When you’re lacking sleep, you feel impatient and on edge. It’s harder to accomplish your day’s tasks which may lead you to feel like you’re all over the place. Whenever possible, aim for at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night. Establish a calming bedtime routine to gradually relax. ___20___.
A. Move your body.
B. Book a date with yourself.
C. Instead, you can just try being fully present during a meal.
D. If your life feels messy, it’s obviously harder to stay awake.
E. Busy schedules often push mental health to the bottom of our list.
F. For some, it’s spending time alone with a good book and a cup of tea.
G. Don’t jump into bed immediately after answering the day’s last email.
C 17. B 18. F 19. E 20. G
根据前文“This doesn’t mean you have to take an hour to meditate (冥想) each day.( 这并不意味着你必须每天花一个小时来冥想。)”否定“每天冥想一小时”的复杂方式,以及后文“Notice the way your food smells and how the temperature and textures of it feel when you take a bite.( 当你咬一口的时候,注意食物的气味,以及它的温度和质地。)” C选项“Instead, you can just try being fully present during a meal.(相反,你可以尝试在吃饭时完全专注当下。)”
根据上文“Tending to your own needs can help reset your emotional compass.( 关注你自己的需求可以帮助你重置你的情感指南针。)” B选项“Book a date with yourself.(和自己约个会。)”
根据前文“There are so many ways to practice self-care.( 有很多方法可以练习自我照顾。)”提到“自我关怀有很多方式”,以及后文“For others, it might be a nice walk with a pet, or a warm bath with beautiful music.( 对其他人来说,可能是和宠物一起散步,或者是听着美妙的音乐洗个热水澡。)” F选项“For some, it’s spending time alone with a good book and a cup of tea.( 对有些人来说,是独自看书、喝茶。)”
E选项“Busy schedules often push mental health to the bottom of our list.(忙碌的日程常把心理健康挤到清单末尾。)”
根据前文“Establish a calming bedtime routine to gradually relax.( 建立一个安静的睡前习惯,逐渐放松。)” G选项“Don’t jump into bed immediately after answering the day’s last email.(回复完当天最后一封邮件后,不要马上上床。)”

“add... to...” 故填to。
“____2____ (issue) in 2019 to improve national health outcomes”在句中作后置定语,修饰“a comprehensive public health strategy”,“strategy”与“issue(发布)”之间是被动关系,即战略是被发布的,所以用过去分词issued。
“____4____ sets goals through 2030”是定语从句,先行词是“a new nationwide weight management campaign”,指物,在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词that或which引导。故填that / which。

故填them。

I was stuck at the border (边界) with no way out. I didn’t know it then, but this border was more than just a physical place — it was a turning point in my life, a limit I had to cross before moving on to something new. That’s when kindness appeared, just when I needed it most.
He appeared at the Tanzania-Zambia border. I was on a life-changing mission, determined to rid myself and my family of poverty. But things took a bad turn. All my belongings were stolen. I was left with only the clothes I was wearing, with no way to contact home and no way to move forward or go back.
I begged for food to survive, feeling hunger that pushed me beyond what I could bear. I kept telling myself not to give up. “Keep going! You’ve got dreams to chase (追逐),” I reminded myself.
On the seventh day, Joel, a 34-year-old gentleman, saw my situation and came closer. I had neither ever seen nor met him before. He asked what had happened to me, and I explained everything — the theft, the hunger, and how I was stuck at the border for days.
Joel listened carefully. He showed his kindness to me. He paid for my bus fare. Besides, he said I could stay at his home and gave me shelter for two weeks. This man, who didn’t know me at all, treated me like one of his family members. His kindness changed everything for me.
After two weeks, I told him, “Joel, I need to go and keep fighting for my dreams.” I didn’t want to be a burden. Joel didn’t stop me. He supported me without hesitation. Before I left, he gave me $10 and said, “It’s not much, but it will help you start.”

With that $10, I started on my mission again. I used the money for necessities and a bus ticket. I worked odd jobs, saving every penny. I worked hard, both online and offline, putting everything I had into building a better life. I rented a small apartment and began taking online courses to improve my skills. Whenever I faced a challenge, Joel’s generosity fueled my determination to succeed in business. Slowly but surely, I started to build a new life for myself, always keeping in mind the kindness that had set me on this path.
Now, as a CEO of a new company, I was looking forward to the exciting meeting with Joel. My heart was full of thanks as I got ready to show Joel how his $10 had grown into something amazing. I wanted to give back by supporting the community projects he cared about. Most of all, I hoped to look at the kind man who believed in me when I had nothing, and tell him that because he helped me, I now want to help others too. Meeting him again felt like completing a circle of kindness that started with his good heart.

“There’s a whole lot of smart people not just understanding the problem, but also looking for solutions all the way through the producing cycle and use phase,” said Matt Dwyer, vice president of global product footprint. “Compared to 10 years ago, it’s a whole new world.”
