B Originally from a town in Michigan, my grandmother welcomed me to stay with my grandparents each summer during my early years. I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond (关系) with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts (被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work. A few years ago, when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell (告别) to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday. I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow (枕头). It was small and hard. I moved it to the seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝) it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I had collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was! 31. The author liked staying with her grandparents because __________. A. they often bought her some gifts B. she was curious about people and things there C. she could have tea parties and eat sandwiches D she could learn to sew quilts 32. How did the author feel when she found the silver thimble? A. Surprised and joyful. B. Delighted but regretful. C. Guilty and sad. D. Joyful but lonely. 33. It can be inferred from the passage that the silver thimble __________. A. was the item the author had been trying to find B. was the most treasured thimble of grandma C. was very precious to the author D. was a birthday gift grandma had given the author 34. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to __________. A. explain how her grandmother influenced her interest in sewing and making quilts. B. describe her grandmother’s life stories and the history of their family. C. express her deep love for her grandmother and the precious memories they shared. D. show how a small town in Michigan differs from city life. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A A Little Pillow B The Joy of Finding Something Lost C. Grandma’s Life Story D. Grandma’s Silver Thimble C We have long been aware that living near major roads can be harmful to people, mainly because of prolonged exposure to air pollution. However, road traffic noise is also a widespread problem in cities whose impact on children’s health remains poorly understood. A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students. The study included 3760 children between 6 and 11 years of age. To assess the possible impact of traffic noise on their cognitive (认知的) development, the researchers focused on two abilities that develop rapidly during preadolescence (青春期前) and are essential for learning and school attainment: attention and working memory. The fieldwork for the study was carried out over a 12-month period in 2022 and 2023, during which the participants completed the cognitive tests four times. The aim of these tests was not only to assess their working memory and attention but also to study their evolution over time. Over the same period, noise measurements were taken in front of the 38 participating schools, as well as in the playgrounds and inside classrooms. In the analysis of outdoor noise levels of schools, higher average noise levels and greater fluctuation (波动) in noise levels were both associated with poorer student performance on all tests. Inside the classroom, greater fluctuation in noise levels was also associated with slower progress over the course of the year on all cognitive tests. However, children exposed to higher average classroom noise levels over the course of the year performed worse than students in quieter classrooms only on the attention test, but not on the working memory test. The researchers used the 2022 road traffic noise map of the city of Barcelona to estimate the average noise level at each participant’s home. In this case, however, no association was observed between residential noise and cognitive development. “This could be because noise exposure at schools is more harmful as it affects concentration and learning processes,” commented Maria Forester. “On the other hand, although noise measurements were taken at the schools, noise levels at the children’s homes were estimated using a noise map that may be less accurate and, in any case, only reflected outdoor noise. This, too, may have influenced the results.” 36. What problem does Paragraph 1 highlight? A. Negative effects of living in big cities. B. The obstacle to improving working memory and attention. C. The harm of air pollution to children’s health. D. Impacts of traffic noise on children. 37. The word “evolution” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to __________. A. progression B. transformation C. influence D. challenge 38. According to paragraph 4, what can we learn from the research on noise levels and student performance? A. Higher average outdoor noise levels only affect students’ attention test results. B. Greater indoor noise fluctuation has negative impacts on students’ cognitive progress. C. Higher average classroom noise levels influence students’ working memory. D. Lower outdoor noise fluctuation leads to poorer performance on all tests. 39. What is Maria Forester trying to explain in the last paragraph? A. The major research directions of future studies. B. The reasons for taking noise measurements at schools. C. The factors influencing the findings of research on residential noise. D. The effects of residential noise levels on children’s concentration. 40. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage? A. The Impact of Traffic Noise on Children’s Cognitive Development B. A Study Comparing Noise Levels in Schools and Residential Areas C. How Air Pollution and Noise Affect Students’ Learning Ability D. Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic (自闭的) , his parents were worried. In2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath underwater, which greatly boosted his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions. As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. A. they often bought her some gifts B. she was curious about people and things there C. she could have tea parties and eat sandwiches D. she could learn to sew quilts 32. A. A Little Pillow B. The Joy of Finding Something Lost C. Grandma’s Life Story D. Grandma’s Silver Thimble 【答案】31. B 32. A 33. C 34. C 35. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond (关系) with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older.(我来自城市,却很喜欢他们所居住的那个小镇。 根据第四段中“I moved it to the seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her! 故选A。 根据第四段中“I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I had collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow!(我小心翼翼地把那枚顶针放在了我多年来收集起来的那些顶针中间,这样我就能一直看到上帝选择赠予我的这份礼物了。 根据文章内容以及第四段中“I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. 根据文章第四段中“Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝) it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I had collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow!(我没有想到它是从她的手指上掉下来的,而是想象着她把它缝在那天我碰巧放在床罩上的小枕头里。 D。 C We have long been aware that living near major roads can be harmful to people, mainly because of prolonged exposure to air pollution. 39 What is Maria Forester trying to explain in the last paragraph? Barcelona’s Efforts to Reduce Traffic Noise in Urban Areas 【答案】36. D 37. A 38. B 39. C 40. A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students.(然而,道路交通噪音也是城市中一个普遍存在的问题,其对儿童健康的影响仍然知之甚少。 根据划线词前文“The fieldwork for the study was carried out over a 12-month period in 2022 and 2023, during which the participants completed the cognitive tests four times.(这项研究的实地调查于 2022 年和 2023 年持续了 12 个月,在此期间参与者共完成了四次认知测试)”和后文“over time(随着时间的推移)”可知,这项研究持续12个月,完成了四次认知测试,由此推知测试的目的是研究他们的认知随时间的变化情况,evolution意为“进展,发展”,故选A。 根据第四段中“Inside the classroom, greater fluctuation in noise levels was also associated with slower progress over the course of the year on all cognitive tests.(在教室内部,噪音水平的波动较大也与学生在一年中所有认知测试中的进步缓慢有关)”可知,室内更大幅度的噪音波动对学生的学习认知进步不利,故选B。 根据最后一段““This could be because noise exposure at schools is more harmful as it affects concentration and learning processes,” commented Maria Forester. “On the other hand, although noise measurements were taken at the schools, noise levels at the children’s homes were estimated using a noise map that may be less accurate and, in any case, only reflected outdoor noise. This, too, may have influenced the results.”(‘这可能是因为学校的噪音更有害,因为它会影响注意力和学习过程,’Maria Forester评论道。‘另一方面,虽然在学校进行了噪音测量,但儿童家中的噪音水平是用噪音地图估计的,可能不太准确,而且无论如何,只反映了室外的噪音。这也可能影响了结果。’)”可知,在最后一段中Maria Forester解释了影响住宅噪声研究结果的因素:儿童家中的噪音水平是用噪音地图估计的,可能不太准确,而且噪音地图只反映了室外的噪音。故选C。 40题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“A new study conducted at 38 schools in Barcelona suggests that traffic noise at schools has a harmful effect on the development of working memory and attention in primary school students.(在巴塞罗那的 38 所学校进行的一项新研究表明,学校内的交通噪音会对小学学生的注意力和工作记忆的发展产生不利影响)”可知,文章主要讲述了一项研究,该研究发现交通噪音对学生的注意力和工作记忆有负面影响。 Many animals migrate at certain times of the year. Healthy eating is significant for our physical and mental well-being, for it not only builds up our bodies but also helps us stay focused in class and think clearly. How to eat healthily? First, we must have a balanced diet, choosing a variety of foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and meat to get enough nutrients. Second, it is regular meals that matter most — we should never skip breakfast, and eat lunch and dinner on time every day. Besides, I suggest cutting down on sweet snacks and drinks, and drinking more water instead, because these sweet things can do harm to our teeth.
