Shubham Jaglan, an 11-year-old boy from Israna village, was the son of a milkman. While most children at his age were passionate about crickets (板球), he put his entire being into that one thing that had changed the course of his life — golf.
The boy’s journey started from the fields of Israna when he was just six. He first saw a golf club when his grandfather took him to an academy in their village. To learn the game, Shubham practised bunker shots (沙坑击球). Besides, his father, Jagpal, a milkman, filled up a big bowl for feeding the cows with sand and placed it in the courtyard for him. At home, Shubham spent hours watching YouTube videos of Tiger Woods, his hero. On the weekends Jagpal used to drive Shubham to Karnal — about 45 km away — to let him play golf all day.
However, Shubham faced challenges. Two weeks into his lessons, a small boy next to him took a wild swing and hit him on the head with a golf club. He was rushed to the hospital, sewn up and sent home. Yet he returned to practice the very next day. When he first moved to Delhi for training, Shubham neither spoke nor understood anything other than Haryanvi— his mother tongue. Almost a year passed, yet he remained out of school. Despite this, not once did he consider quitting.
Support came from Nonita Lall Qureshi, his coach, and the Golf Foundation. The foundation helped his family move to Delhi and sponsored his training and his foreign trips. It also spoke to the Delhi Golf Club, which agreed to let him play and gave money help. Additionally, the foundation secured a place for him at a school, free of cost. Bolstered, Shubham started in the fourth grade almost immediately and adapted fast.
For the past four years, Shubham has been making a mark in the international circuit. He had played every major junior tournament in the US, Europe, and Asia. This year, he won the Junior World Golf Championships. “Shubham’s focus at every tournament was to give his best, and that’s what made him Shubham Jaglan.” Qureshi, his coach, noted.
24. Why did Shubham’s father prepare a sand-filled bowl for him?
A. To feed the cows easily. B. To help him play golf.
C. To practice like his hero. D. To watch videos better.
25. What can be inferred about Shubham in paragraph 3?
A. He is sport-gifted. B. He is open-minded. C. He is warm-hearted. D. He is strong-willed.
26. What does the underlined word “Bolstered” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Honored. B. Amazed. C. Supported. D. Impressed.
27. What can we learn from Shubham’s golfing experience?
A. No pains, no gains. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Great minds think alike. D. It’s never too late to learn.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了11岁男孩Shubham克服困难坚持高尔夫训练并取得成就的故事。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第二段中“Besides, his father, Jagpal, a milkman, filled up a big bowl for feeding the cows with sand and placed it in the courtyard for him.(此外,他的父亲Jagpal是一名送奶工,他用一个喂牛的大碗装满沙子,放在院子里供他使用)”以及“On the weekends Jagpal used to drive Shubham to Karnal — about 45 km away — to let him play golf all day.(周末,Jagpal经常开车送Shubham去大约45公里外的Karnal,让他一整天都打高尔夫球)”可知,Shubham的父亲为他准备了一个装满沙子的碗是为了帮助他打高尔夫球。故选B。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第三段中“However, Shubham faced challenges. Two weeks into his lessons, a small boy next to him took a wild swing and hit him on the head with a golf club. He was rushed to the hospital, sewn up and sent home. Yet he returned to practice the very next day.(然而,Shubham面临着挑战。上课两周后,他旁边的一个小男孩猛地挥杆,用高尔夫球杆击中了他的头部。他被紧急送往医院,缝合后送回家。然而,第二天他就回来继续练习了)”以及“When he first moved to Delhi for training, Shubham neither spoke nor understood anything other than Haryanvi — his mother tongue. Almost a year passed, yet he remained out of school. Despite this, not once did he consider quitting.(当他第一次搬到德里接受训练时,Shubham除了他的母语哈里亚纳语外,什么都不会说,也听不懂。将近一年过去了,他仍然没有上学。尽管如此,他从未想过放弃)”可推知,虽然遇到了很多的困难,但Shubham意志坚强,始终不放弃。故选D。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。 根据划线词上文“The foundation helped his family move to Delhi and sponsored his training and his foreign trips. It also spoke to the Delhi Golf Club, which agreed to let him play and gave money help. Additionally, the foundation secured a place for him at a school, free of cost.(该基金会帮助他的家人搬到德里,并赞助他的训练和出国旅行。
故选A。
C
When a famous political figure gives a noted speech in your town square, is it a historic event or a historical event — or perhaps both? When you’re considering historic vs. historical, are the meanings the same?
The difference between historic and historical can be subtle, and English presents us with such subtly confusing issues like words or phrases that sound similar but are not the same, such as flush out vs. flesh out, home in vs. honey in and loose vs. lose. And what about words with similar meanings, such as compliment vs. complement? It can seem like a lot to remember, but if you take things step by step and keep some basic tips in mind, you’ll confidently make those word choices — with historic vs. historical and other language issues too.
What does historic mean? Is historic a word you’re using wrong? Over its centuries of use, historic has come to describe something of social or political importance that happened in the past, such as the political speech we mentioned above, or the Gettysburg Address. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech is understood as a historic address.
What does historical mean? Unlike historic, historical does not imply something of particular importance. It simply means that something is relating to history. Historical would be the choice, for example, to describe an organization devoted to an aspect of history, such as the New York Historical Society, which offers a museum and a library. The biography of Abraham Lincoln offered an interesting historical perspective.
When considering historic vs. historical, try word association. Remember that historic is usually used to describe specific events; and both historic and specific end in-ic. Meanwhile, historical is used more generally to talk about things related to history; and historical and general both end in-al. See? Not so hard, and definitely not one of the more confusing grammar rules.

My mother’s name is the color of milk. Playing a guitar makes me see warm yellow. The sound is flat, hard and smooth. And Monday is pink. These feelings are always the same, and always present. This is synaesthesia.
Synaesthesia is a brain connection that causes about 4.4% of people to experience the world as a mix of feelings. For example, words can create taste, sequences of numbers may be seen in the mind as a special pattern, or the feel of textures might bring out emotions. Synaesthesia is not considered to be a brain disorder but it is described as a different way of seeing the world and generally thought to be helpful.
Julia Simner is director of the multisense synaesthesia research lab at the University of Sussex. Her study found that children with synaesthesia were better in several skills than those without. “Specifically, they were significantly better in receptive vocabulary (how many words they could understand), productive vocabulary (how many words they knew how to say), short term memory store, attention to detail and creativity,” Simner says.
However, psychologist Lucie Bouvet points out that synaesthesia can sometimes make communication harder, and its potential to enhance learning is still debated. Regardless of its direct benefits, studying synaesthesia helps us understand the cognitive (认知) processes behind language and perception. “Synaesthesia is fascinating on its own,” Bouvet adds, “but it’s now seen as part of a broader cognitive profile. Understanding this profile is important to fully get to know how synaesthesia works.”
For me, having synaesthesia makes life more joyful. Listening to music feels like being wrapped in a cozy blanket. When I read, the words don’t just lie on the page — they seem to float and dance around me, making the story feel real. And when people speak, their words seem to paint the air with color.
32. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The causes of synaesthesia. B. The function of synaesthesia.
C. The influence of synaesthesia. D. The definition of synaesthesia.
33. What did Julia Simner’s study find about children with synaesthesia?
A. They have a stronger memory. B. They deal with details faster.
C. They master more advanced words. D. They are much more creative.
34. What is the author’s attitude to synaesthesia?
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Appreciative. D. Critical.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Synaesthesia: a unique way to see the world B. Synaesthesia: a special kind of brain disorder
C. Synaesthesia: a new source of human creativity D. Synaesthesia: a mixed feeling of various emotions

28. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 2?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By telling a story. C. By giving examples. D. By asking questions.
29. Which of the following pairs of words has the similar meanings?
A. Flush out vs. flesh out. B. Loose vs. lose.
C. Compliment vs. complement. D. Home in vs. honey in.
30. What is the difference between “historic” and “historical” according to the text?
A. “Historic” describes events while “historic” describes objects.
B. “Historic” means important while “historical” relates to the past.
C. “Historic” is for recent events and “historical” is for ancient ones.
D. “Historic” is for true stories and “historical” is for personal views.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To discuss the history of “historic” and “historical”.
B. To explain the right usage of “historic” and “historical”.
C. To argue the grammar focus of “historic” and “historical”.
D. To prove the importance of “historic” and “historical”.
D
