The handwritten letter arrived at Dale Tingle's home in Watkinsville,Georgia, after months of
her praying for the survival of a person she'd never met.Tingle,a grandmother, was well beyond
the golden age for stem cell (donation.Less than a year and a half earlier, she had
organized a stem cell registration event to help a local 3-year-old boy battling a rare type of
leukemia().She wasn't a match for him.But she was informed just before Christmas in
2010 that she appeared to be a match for Kruger,a German with leukemia in urgent need of her
stem cells.
Months after the donation,Tingle began receiving letters from Kruger."It's an amazing feeling
to know that there is someone on the other side of the world who I am connected to so deeply."
Tingle is certain it wasn't just luck that led to her being able to save a stranger."There are not
many opportunities in life to know that you have truly saved someone's life,"Tingle says."It's a
chapter of my story that I hold close,a rare and precious marker of a life that has touched another
deeply."

donation of stem cells harvested from a mother giving birth and has no sign of cancer now.

New research from the University of Birmingham indicates that regularly eating foods high in
lavanols(黄烷醇),like tea,apples,and cocoa,may help support vascular(血管的)health in
men during extended periods of sitting.
Sitting for long stretches is a common part of modemn life.Young adults are estimated to spend
around six hours per day seated, and this amount of inactivity has been shown to reduce how well
blood vessels function.Earlier work has demonstrated that even a small 1%drop in vascular
function is linked to a 13%increase in the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks.
To investigate whether flavanols could protect the vascular system from the effects of sitting
without breaks, the researchers examined the impacts of consuming them before a controlled sitting
period.Forty healthy young men took part.Twenty of them had high fitness levels, the other twenty
with lower fitness levels. Each participant consumed either a high-flavanol cocoa drink (695 mg of
total flavanols per drink)or a low-flavanol cocoa drink (5.6 mg of total flavanols per drink)before
completing a two-hour sitting trial.
Researchers found that participants in both fitness groups who consumed the low-flavanol drink
showed declines in flow-.mediated dilalation(FlD)(流量介导扩张)in the arteries(动脉)of their
arms and legs. The low-flavanol drink was also associated with reduced blood flow, and lower
muscle oxygenation in the legs. However, the group that consumed the high-flavanol cocoa did not
experience declines in FMD in either the arm or leg arteries.
Dr.Catarina Rendeiro concluded,"Our research shows that consuming high-flavanol foods
and drinks during sitting periods is a good way to reduce some of the impact of inactivity on the
vascular system.Using favanol-rich foods and drinks, especially in combination with a short walk
or standing up,could be a good way to enhance long-term health,no matter the individual's fitness
level.

29.How did researchers conduct the study?
A.By analyzing the data of previous studies.
B.By comparing the effects of different drinks.
C.By examining the participants'fitness levels.

A.Stabilized artery function.
B.Improved fitness levels.
C.Increased heart disease risks.
D.Reduced leg blood flow.
31.What does Dr.Rendeiro recommend people to do?
A.Reduce the consumption of cocoa drinks.B.Focus more on fitness training.

In 2022,Hektoria Glacier()slipped into the sea near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Over 16 months,it lost a huge 8 kilometers in just two of those months-the fastest glacial melt(
in the modern record. Now,researchers say they have identified the worrying truth behind it:
a combination of glacial earthquakes and a belt of thinned ice appearing afloat and breaking apart
instant山y.
To figure out why Hekloria Glacier was melting so quickly, researchers first located its original
point.Using satellite data and researching its sunken areas, they found half of the 25 km of lost ice
had been grounded. The study suggests the process began 20 years ago, when the massive Larsen-
B ice shelf, which once blocked Hektoria, broke up in 2002.The glacier initially pulled back, but
thicker sea ice formed and held it in place for over a decade before it recently started to melt much
faster.
But at the same time, the Hektoria's ice was stretching and thinning out across the flat bedrock
underlying it,forming what's known as an ice plain.Warmer ocean temperatures, meanwhile,
began to prevent sea ice formation, exposing Hektoria to open seas.In 2022,the storm-driven
waves cleared out the sea ice and Hektoria's 12 kilometers of floating ice broke up into icebergs.
The loss of the floating ice's supporting effect caused Hektoria's ice plain to float, periodically
rising and falling with the tides()until it lifted fully off its bedrock and began breaking apart
into smaller icebergs. The force of the breakup turned over some of the icebergs"toes out",
changing their direction. These hits generated glacial earthquakes, leading the rest of the ice plain
to break free.
"The processes at work on Hektoria show a need for instruments that can detect a glacier
becoming released from its bedrock,"says Eric Rignot,a glaciologist at the University of
California.“Buoyancy-.driven(浮力驱s动)break-up could be the monster sleeping in our
backyard. It shows us what other Antarctic glaciers could do in a warmer climate."
32.What primarily caused Hektoria's record-breaking melt?
A.Warmer air temperatures.
B.The loss of all grounded ice.
C.The formation of a thinned ice belt.D.Glacier quakes and ice break-up.
33.What happened after the floating ice was gone?
A.Thicker ice melted faster.
B.Bedrock rose with tides.
C.The ice plain floated and broke.
D.Sea ice reformed quickly.

34.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Glacial melt driven by buoyancy is rarely seen.
B.The melt of Antarctic glaciers is hard to detect.
C.Unexpected glacial disasters may appear in the future.
D.Human activities are the most powerful driver for glacial melt.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Pressures on Hektoria Glacier

Simple Morning Habits for Greater Productivity
Want greater productivity?Start with simple momning habits.36 Let's dive into what
actually moves the needle.
Limit unnecessary decisions.
Start your moring by eliminating as many decisions as possible.37 For example, lay out
clothes the night before, know exactly what to have for breakfast, and don't debate whether to
exercise-it's already decided. This isn't robotic. It preserves mental energy for choices that matter
later in the day.Automating the small stuff gives you a head start while others are still figuring out
what socks to wear.
女Move your body early.
Exercise is the most transformative thing you can do for your brain today. But here's the
kicker-it doesn't have to be intense.Maybe it's 10 push-ups,a quick walk around the block,or
stretches while you are making coffee. The workouts get your blood flowing before the day's stress
takes over.38
Feed your mind wisely.
39 Skip social media and striking news.Instead, read a few book pages, listen to a
podcast()that challenges your thinking,or joural to clarify priorities for the day.Feeding
your brain with quality content shapes how you process information all day.
女40
Complete one small but meaningful task-make the bed, reply to an important email,or
prepare meals-before most people sip their first coffee. This small act brings a quick sense of
achievement. In this case, your brain releases a hit of dopamine()that prepares you for
more productive behavior.
A.Be selective about morning input.
B.Create motivation with a tiny win.
C.Prioritize minor tasks over big ones.
D.They're easy to stick with but powerful over time.

Chloe was a high school student from a cat-loving family-her home had three beloved pets.
Every family member loved them deeply.Yet Chloe knew the three cats were a big burden:their
food, toys and regular checkups at the pet clinic took up much of the family's monthly budget, and
her parents, who worked long office hours, struggled to spare time for their care.Still, her mom,
with a soft spot for furry creatures, often left out extra treats for animals passing the yard. She
would always sigh afterward and say they couldn't afford to take in more.
One cold winter aftemoon,as Chloe walked home from the library,a soft, trembling cry came
from a bush by the sidewalk. She pushed the branches aside and found a little thin cat,its fur
messy and dirty. Its front paw()was bleeding, with a sharp piece of broken glass stuck in it.
The cold wind made it shake violently, and it let out a weak, pitiful meow.
Chloe felt heartbroken but stuck:just the day before, her mom had set a strict rule, saying
three cats already stretched the family's budget and energy to the limit, and that they couldn't take
in another pet or cover pet clinic costs. But Chloe couldn't leave the little cat to suffer in the
freezing cold:She wrapped it gently and quickly in her jacket and ran to a nearby pet clinic, where
she was told that the cat needed wound cleaning, medicines, and daily bandage()changes for
a week-and that improper care might cause infection. The total cost would use up all her saved
pocket money-cash she had saved up for months to buy a limited-edition cat-themed sketchbook
and watercolor set.As the little cat let out a soft meow,Chloe paid without hesitation.
After treatment,Chloe held the sleepy cat, which Chloe named Milo, and stood at her front
door, anxious. She'd sacrificed her much-wanted art set for Milo, but convincing her mom to let
Milo stay felt like an impossible task.
