Singapore is one of the cleanest countries in the world. People in the country have many strict rules in public (公共场所). These rules make sure that streets are clean and parks look nice. Now let’s see the “Dos and Don’ts” in Singapore.
There are many things you must do in Singapore. When using the escalator (自动扶梯) in Singapore, you must stand on the left and walk on the right. This allows those people who want to walk up to go around you easily. Singapore also builds bike-riding roads and walking roads, so you must make sure you walk on the right roads. This keeps everyone much safer.
Also, you must bring a bottle if you want to drink water, because you can get tap water (自来水) easily in Singapore. The government carefully tests the water, so it’s safe to drink straight from the tap. You can buy bottled water anywhere in Singapore, but it’s quite expensive, while tap water is free.
However, there are some things that you can’t do. In Singapore, the government doesn’t allow shops or supermarkets to sell chewing gum (口香糖). You can’t even bring it with you. To keep clean, the government also doesn’t allow people to eat or drink on trains and buses, because it can make the seats and floors dirty. You can’t play loud music or talk loudly on your phone either, because it might make other passengers angry.
People in Singapore take their rules very seriously, and this makes their country clean and enjoyable for people from around the world.
28. What must people do in Singapore?
A. Stand on the right of an escalator.
B. Walk on the right of an escalator.
C. Walk on the roads for bikes.
29. What does the underlined word “gratis” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Fresh. B. Delicious. C. Free.
30. Why CAN’T people eat on trains in Singapore?
A. Because there’s no food for sale on trains.
B. Because it may make the seats or floors dirty.
C. Because other people may get hungry.
31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Strict public rules in Singapore.
B. Clean streets in Singapore.
C. People in Singapore.

A few days ago, I ran into (撞到) a stranger. I said sorry to him, and he said, “I’m sorry, too. I wasn’t even noticing you.” We were very polite, the stranger and I. Then we went on our ways after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, when I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude (粗鲁的) to Betty. Go and check the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favourite blue.”
When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient (有耐心的). I felt sorry about that.
I quietly went to Betty’s bed. “My dear,” I said, “are these the flowers you picked for me?” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated you that way today.” And she said, “Mommy, that’s okay. I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”
That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn’t realize (认识到) how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.

Singapore is one of the cleanest countries in the world. People in the country have many strict rules in public (公共场所). These rules make sure that streets are clean and parks look nice. Now, let’s see the “Dos and Don’ts” in Singapore.
