【原文】Good evening to you all. As we all know, education is very important. If our children pay attention and learn as much as they can, it can set them on the road to a good career and a happy life. But as well as learning subjects at school, it is also important for them to learn right ways to obey in life. All of us should have basic rules of behavior, including truthfulness, honesty, charity, love, and kindness. Education is not aimed at getting only a degree. Successful moral education can make a good student perfect. Perhaps most moral education can be learned at home, rather than in school or college, because our children spend most of their time at home. Moral education can often be learned best by actions rather than words. Sometimes we adults forget this golden rule and advise young people to act well, while not always doing so ourselves. Children are good observers, so it is the duty of you as parents to set a good example to the younger generation.

Which story in Reader’s Digest impresses you the most?
Last year, I once came across a story in Reader’s Digest about a man lost deep in the forest in wintertime. Night was falling and he built a fire under the large fir (冷杉) tree he was using as a shelter (庇护物). Wind came in and snow that was on the fir tree slid off and put his fire out. Lesson learned? Never build a fire (or a shelter) under a tree with snow.
— Sharon Jardine, Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia
Tony Fitzjohn (“Locked in the Lion’s Jaws,” April 2023) gives his all to help ensure wild animals like Freddie can live their lives under proper care. But one can only imagine how dangerous it must be for humans to live in the wild. Tony survived an animal attack with the help of not only his fellow human beings but also Freddie, the lion, whom he raised from a cub (幼兽). My belief in mutual care between humans and animals was deepened.
— Vasudevan, India
Many years ago, I read a short line in Reader’s Digest that I decided to make a family rule at my house. We set aside an hour every day when we could reconnect, share our ups and downs — and especially share the best laughter of the day. I’m so happy I did this because it was the only quality time that we shared as a family. Some very happy memories were formed at those times.
— Lynn Sabourin, Gatineau, Quebec
I enjoyed “Fast and reliable Facts About Trains” (13 Things) in the June 2023 issue! It brought back a childhood memory to me: my mother bringing me to the dentist when I was a child. I remember snow, so it must have been wintertime, and the dentist chair. The dentist was friendly, and I believe he had to pull a rotten (蛀坏的) tooth. It reminds me to appreciate those small warm moments of life.
— Douglas Woods, Napanee, Ontario
21. What caused the fire to go out in the story Sharon Jardine read?
A. The strong wind. B. The snow falling from the tree.
C. The cold night. D. The wrongly chosen wood.
22. Why did Lynn Sabourin set up a daily family hour?
A. To make a strict household rule. B. To follow a popular parenting style.
C. To reduce the children’s screen time. D. To create a space for family connection.
23. What do the four readers share in their reviews?
A. They retell the impressive story

Creating a running route (路线) is not easy, especially in a city like San Francisco: you’ve got to find somewhere safe and avoid crowds. One runner in the city, however, is making things even more complicated (复杂的) — with beautiful results.
For the past four years, Lenny Maughan has been turning his routes into art. His paths through the city are carefully chosen so that, viewed on a map, they form images (图像) of everything from a simple hand to a spaceship. So far he’s made 53 works — including, most recently, an unmistakable image of the artist Frida Kahlo that hit the headlines on social media.
Maughan didn’t set out to be a running artist. But as route-tracking apps became popular, runners began to notice images in their pathways, “kind of like a Rorschach test”, he said. The immediate impulse (心血来潮) among many runners was, of course, to draw heart shapes: “That’s where it all began,” he said. “But I wanted to do something innovative and something original.”
His first project was the Vulcan hand gesture from Star Trek. “I just printed out a paper map and drew a hand shape along Market Street and the other fingers and wrist came pretty easily,” he said. Next up was a television, in the area that helped give birth to the. TV set, followed by a giant Batman logo covering much of the city.
Maughan has lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and many of his images happen to have a connection to the region. He has run in the shape of California; the famous guitarist Jerry Garcia’s hand; and a firefighter’s helmet, to honor heroes amid wildfires. His goal is to create images anyone can recognize: “This is just a way to make the streets my own.”
24. What do we know about Maughan?
A. His map drawing has attracted the public.
B. His art has greatly changed San Francisco.
C. His running paths make him known online.
D. His works are praised by artist Frida Kahlo.
25. What does the underlined word “innovative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Difficult. B. Creative. C. Popular. D. Useful.
26. Which can best describe Maughan’s running projects?
A. Freely-chosen and educational. B. Easily-finished and unmistakable.
C. Digitally-designed and promising. D. Carefully-planned and meaningful.
27. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. San Francisco offers the safest environment.
B. Maughan’s artworks are inspired by San Francisco.
C. The city roads will be under Maughan’s ownership.
D. San Francisco benefits from Maughan’s running art.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. D 27. B

【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。主要介绍旧金山跑者莱尼·莫恩将跑步路线设计成地图艺术图案,其创意作品走红,且作品多与当地地域特色相关的故事。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“So far he’s made 53 works — including, most recently, an unmistakable image of the artist Frida Kahlo that hit the headlines on social media.(到目前为止,他已经创作了53件作品——其中包括最近一幅辨识度极高的艺术家弗里达·卡罗的形象,这一作品在社交媒体上登上了头条。)”可知,莫恩的跑步路线形成的艺术图案让他在网络上被人们熟知。故选C项。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The immediate impulse (心血来潮) among many runners was, of course, to draw heart shapes: “That’s where it all began,” he said. “But I wanted to do something innovative and something original.”(当然,许多跑步者的第一反应都是画心形:“一切都是从这里开始的,”他说。“但我想做一些富有新意且独一无二的东西。”)”可知,句中but表转折,说明莫恩不想和其他跑者一样只画心形这类常见图案,而是想做不同的事;且innovative与original为并列关系,二者语义相近,original意为“独特的、原创的”,由此可推测,innovative意为“有创意的、新颖的”。故选B项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“His paths through the city are carefully chosen so that, viewed on a map, they form images (图像) of everything from a simple hand to a spaceship.(他精心选择穿过城市的路线,这样在地图上看,这些路线就能形成从简单的手到宇宙飞船等各种事物的图像。)”以及第五段中的“Maughan has lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and many of his images happen to have a connection to the region. He has run in the shape of California; the famous guitarist Jerry Garcia’s hand; and a firefighter’s helmet, to honor heroes amid wildfires.(莫恩在旧金山生活了20多年,他的许多图案恰好都与这个地区有着关联。他跑出过加利福尼亚州的形状、著名吉他手杰瑞·加西亚的手的形状,还有消防员的头盔形状,以此向野火中的英雄们致敬。)”可知,莫恩的跑步路线都是经过精心挑选规划的,且作品多与当地相关、兼具纪念意义,是精心规划且富有意义的。故选D项。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Maughan has lived in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and many of his images happen to have a connection to the region.(莫恩在旧金山生活了20多年,他的许多图案恰好都与这个地区有着关联。)”可知,莫恩的艺术作品的灵感都来源于旧金山这座城市及其相关的人或事。故选B项。
C
You’ve arrived at a party, but you don’t see anyone you know. Who should you talk to? You put on a special pair of glasses and look at the people again. Now, you see information about each person on their faces or chests — their jobs, interests, even the friends you have in common. Then, you approach someone who shares a lot with you.
Can you buy these special glasses right now? Negative. But a technology called augmented reality (AR) may make them readily available soon. Augment means to “add to something or expand something.” So, augmented reality is an expanded reality. AR adds pictures, sounds, text, and other information which comes from computer software to the real world.
Some forms of AR are already in use. When you watch a sport such as soccer, you can see the score and the amount of playing time on the TV screen. In addition, the TV producers often draw circles or lines on it to more clearly illustrate something. Doctors use a more complex type of AR. They can project an MRI (核磁共振) scan of a person’s head onto the head itself. Then, while they are performing an operation, the doctors can look at the MRI scan on the patient’s head.
Today, the most accessible (可使用的) form of AR is through smartphone applications. Smartphone AR uses your phone’s GPS software. Imagine you’re walking down the street trying to decide where to eat. Just hold your phone up to a street with restaurants and your phone will show you reviews, menu items, and prices. Shoppers who point their phones at an item in a store can get information on the price and quality — even the same product at other stores.
In the future, we probably won’t use cell phone screens to see augmented reality. A pair of glasses might be all we need. This is an exciting idea, but there are some concerns. Some people worry that AR might produce too much information that can be confusing. Others worry that people might get so addicted that they would prefer augmented reality to actual reality. However, there is no question that AR is here to stay. Soon, everyone will have access to it and people will learn to get used to it.
28. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By solving a problem. D. By describing a scene.
29. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To show how AR is first developed.
B. To explain what AR is and how it works.
C. To discuss why AR glasses cannot be bought now.
D. To tell the differences between AR and the real world.
30. What can we learn about AR from the text?
A. It is more useful in hospital than in other fields.
B. TV producers has already used it for drama programs.
C. Most personal use of AR is through special glasses so far.
D. Smartphone-based AR needs to know your location to work.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward AR?
A. Consistent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. D 31. C

Several years ago, a gallery in Australia was selling hand-painted copies of Vincent van Gogh’s work. Even though they were very close to those original old works of Van Gogh, they were just hand-painted copies, nothing more or less. So, even though they were produced with brushes and paint, did that really make them originals? The answer is clearly no; there was nothing at all original about them. And the same goes for those painted copies of Old Masters sold online.
Copying is a legal (合法的) way of learning how to paint. Unfortunately, some painters never get out of the habit and if it leads to success, then for them it is reasonable. Copying not only the style, the subject matter but particular use of colour of noted artists is becoming widespread and some painters are personally benefiting from it.
A while ago, a copy of a well-known artist, both in style and subject, won a prize. A few years ago, a painter did an exact traced copy painting of an award-winning photo; the painting won first prize and caused a lot of bad feeling all round. Such art should not be worthy of a prize, but somehow it gets the nod from judges even when the appropriation (挪用) is obvious, and such artists do accept the praise for an image that has been copied to the last detail.
Artists who copy seem to be encouraged by social media, online galleries and more. Audiences of these platforms are often unaware of appropriate d work from other artists or other copyrights sources. Moreover, some publications not only present them as outstanding artists but pretend (假装) that they produce their own original work when in fact they struggle to find any originality.
It has to be said that most copying that goes on in non-professional circles doesn’t affect the livelihood of professional artists. However, it is ethically (道德上) wrong to claim it is your own original work when we know it isn’t true.
32. What fact does the author tell at the beginning of the text?
A. Copied works are displayed for sale.
B. Original paintings are highly valued.
C. Most of the art galleries exhibit originals.
D. Hand-painted copies are considered originals.
33. How does the author view copyists being awarded and praised?
A. It is unacceptable at all. B. It is an encouragement.
C. It values impressive skills. D. It is legally advocated.
34. Which is a reason why copying has become widespread according to the text?
A. Audiences tend to favor such artworks.
B Social media helps copyists get noticed.
C. Publications prove these works are original.
D. Copying brings artists success undoubtedly.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Who would allow copying? B. What could copies be made from?
C. Where might copying end? D. How should copies be dealt with?
【答案】32. A 33. A 34. B 35. D

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Artists who copy seem to be encouraged by social media, online galleries and more.(复制作品的艺术家似乎受到了社交媒体、在线画廊等的鼓励)”可知,社交媒体帮助复制者得到关注是复制变得广泛的原因之一。故选B。

How to write a movie review
Whether a movie is a dull or a brilliant work of art, if people are watching it, it’s worth critiquing (评论). Writing a movie review can be an exciting but difficult task. You have to be both a viewer, enjoying the performance, and a critic, analyzing the production. ___36___
Do some background research. It will be valuable to know as much as you can about who worked on the movie. It’s also a good idea to look at reviews for similar movies to know how others have done it.
Take notes as you watch the movie. Before you sit down to watch a film, get your notebook or a computer ready. ___37___ Taking notes allows you to write down little things you can return to later.
Use plenty of examples to back up your opinions. ___38___ Describe the way scenes look, the way a certain person acted, camera angles, and so on. You can use dialogue to help you make your points as well.
___39___ You could treat your review like a formal writing task, but it’s more interesting if you make it your own. If your writing style is usually funny, your review should be no exception. If you’re serious and dramatic, that works, too. Let your language and writing style reflect your unique angle and personality — it’s much more entertaining (娱乐的) for the readers.
Revise and rewrite as needed. Read your review carefully, looking for mistakes, awkward phrasing, or others you might want to change. Don’t be afraid to make major revisions. ___40___. If it makes the review better, then take this opportunity to improve your work.
A. Give it some personality.
B. Be creative and interesting.

【56题详解】
考查副词。句意:每年农历十月的第一天,人们都会庆祝这个节日。修饰动词is observed(庆祝;度过)需用副词,annual(每年的)的副词形式为annually,表示“每年一次地”。

故填to learn。

I’m writing to share a special experience with you. Last week witnessed a thrilling football friendly match at the city stadium, where I cheered for the players as an audience member. Right after the final whistle, I joined a volunteer team for the “Leave No Trace” cleanup. We divided the venue into several sections, sorting and collecting all litter on the ground. With everyone’s joint efforts, the once-messy stadium soon regained its tidy and pleasant look.
This experience left me a deep impression. The match brought me excitement, while the cleanup made me realize small collective efforts can make a big difference to public spaces. Working with peers also gave me a warm sense of fulfillment.
Have you ever joined similar activities? Looking forward to your sharing.

72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ethan had been living with the retired (退休的) couple Mr. and Mrs. Cooper as a paying guest for over six months while studying environmental science in a new city abroad. The couple treated him like their own grandson. Mr. Cooper, a former park guardian, often took him hiking on weekends to watch local plants and animals, pointing out different trees and birds and teaching him basic nature knowledge. Mrs. Cooper, a great cook, made tasty soups and fresh fruit pies daily and listened patiently to his hometown stories — whether about his little brother’s tricks or family lake picnics — never getting bored. Their care reduced Ethan’s loneliness far from home.
With his 19th birthday two days away, Ethan felt sad and empty. He was thankful for the Coopers’ kindness but missed his family badly. He thought of his mom baking his favorite chocolate cake weeks early, his dad buying long-wanted small gifts, and his brother sticking colorful stickers on birthday cards. Unwilling to bother (麻烦) them with his homesickness, he said nothing about the birthday. Every night before bed, Ethan took out the family photo from his wallet — the whole family around the table, a lit chocolate cake in the center, his brother wiping cream on his cheek — and sighed quietly, lost in memories.
Mrs. Cooper noticed Ethan’s low spirits and his frequent stares at the photo. Months ago, when chatting about summer holiday, Ethan had casually mentioned his late-October birthday. The couple marked it down on the calendar and planned a warm surprise to make him feel at home. At dinner that evening, they served his favorite beef soup and apple pie, chatting about nice weather and backyard birds as usual. Ethan tried to join in happily, but his eyes kept glancing at his quiet phone, longing for his mom’s cake and family’s birthday song.
注意:
1.续写词数150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After dinner, Mrs. Cooper said gently, “Let’s take a walk in the backyard.”

Ethan thanked them, and Mr. Cooper brought a box.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
After dinner, Mrs. Cooper said gently, “Let’s take a walk in the backyard.” Ethan followed outside, heart heavy with homesickness. A cool autumn wind touched his face as he walked behind the Coopers, his mind thinking of family birthday times. On stepping into the backyard, Ethan stopped in shock — the backyard looked warm and bright, many small lights hanging above a wooden table, on which was a chocolate cake saying “Happy 19th Birthday, Ethan”. Mrs. Cooper smiled softly, “Wish you a happy and joyful birthday.” His throat tightening and eyes watering, Ethan realized how much the Coopers cared about him.
Ethan thanked them, and Mr. Cooper brought a box. He handed it to Ethan, who took it with both hands and carefully tore back the wrapping paper. Inside the box was a notebook, whose cover was drawn with a cute little bird just like the ones they usually saw in the backyard. Eyes glistening with tears, Ethan held the notebook in his hand tightly, his heart beating with gratitude. Then they began to sing the birthday song, the cheerful tunes filling the air and laughter echoing around them. This simple yet heartfelt moment told him clearly that love is not about blood ties, but about the warm care that wraps around you like sunshine.

D His works are praised by artist Frida Kahlo.
25. What does the underlined word “innovative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Difficult. B. Creative. C. Popular. D. Useful.
26. Which can best describe Maughan’s running projects?
A. Freely-chosen and educational. B. Easily-finished and unmistakable.
C. Digitally-designed and promising. D. Carefully-planned and meaningful.
27. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. San Francisco offers the safest environment.
B. Maughan’s artworks are inspired by San Francisco.
C. The city roads will be under Maughan’s ownership.
D. San Francisco benefits from Maughan’s running art.
A. Consistent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.

B. Social media helps copyists get noticed.
C. Publications prove these works are original.
D. Copying brings artists success undoubtedly.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Who would allow copying? B. What could copies be made from?
C. Where might copying end? D. How should copies be dealt with?

注意:
1.续写词数150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After dinner, Mrs. Cooper said gently, “Let’s take a walk in the backyard.”
