Four of the Most Beautiful Roads in the United States

In the early days of World War II, fears of a potential attack on the Territory of Alaska stimulated military officials to create the Alaska Highway.
Eagle-eyed motorists may spot caribou, moose and grizzly bears along the road. Those keen on eyeing bald eagles should plan a stop near the Canadian border at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. During evenings spent with her crafting (手工艺) group, Kate Smith has produced a host of lovely pieces: hand-made bags, summer dresses, and even jewellery. But the thing she’s most proud of creating is a group of close friends that value each other’s company.
The four members of the group, Smith, Ratnett, Jenny and Clark, whose children were of the similar ages, first met at the school gate in the village of Marshfield. Later Smith ran a shop called Makery, selling craft materials and running in-store workshops. When the four got chatting, it turned out that they all showed interest in crafting and had all popped into the shop at one time or another. From then on, they have been meeting regularly to get crafty, taking it in turns to host at home.
During their craft nights, the group will either work on their own projects or deal with a craft task together. Everyone will bring something delicious to eat, always Clark’s famous homemade bread, sometimes chocolates or a bottle of prosecco. But although all four women love to get their craft on, the real highlight of the evening is the chance to catch up.
“We’ll give each other a big hug when we see each other,” says Smith. “Sometimes we’ll have a lot going on at home, but at our crafting evenings we can just let it all out. We don’t have to pretend everything is all right. I get a huge sense of comfort from asking their opinions on things, and we love sharing and learning new skills together. It’s a safe space filled with lovely people, and just really therapeutic (治愈的).”
With Clark due to move back to her native New Zealand in November, the group plans to meet as regularly as they can in the run-up, and continue their meetings via video call once she’s overseas. As Christmas approaches, they’re also planning to keep up their crafting traditions.

B. They will meet every Christmas.
C. They will travel to New Zealand.
D. They will keep their traditions alive.

About 50 years ago, workers found the remains of a large ship (24 meters long) in the sea near Quanzhou, Fujian Province. Scientists believe it was a cargo (货物) ship from China’s Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
Judging from the ship’s design and the objects found on it, it is suggested that the ship was full of goods (商品) and sailing back to Quanzhou. Long ago, Quanzhou was a very busy port. Ships like this one sailed many times between China and other countries. If you visit Quanzhou, the historic city in southern Fujian, you can explore many old traditions and activities. Some have existed for hundreds of years. Others show how Quanzhou was an important link between East and West and still is.
Right now, until October 7th, an exhibition called the “Ship of Peace” is happening in Beijing at the Fujian Plaza. It tells the story of Quanzhou’s history and rich culture. Quanzhou was a major center for sea trade between the 10th and 14th centuries. Because of this amazing history, UNESCO added Quanzhou to its World Heritage List in 2021, calling it the “business center of the World in Song-Yuan China”.
At the exhibition, visitors can see different-sized model ships that present how boats were built in ancient China. Visitors can also see Dehua white porcelain (德化白瓷), which is famous in the West as “Blanc de Chine” (meaning “Chinese White”). This delicate pottery was made by craftsmen in Fujian’s Dehua town and was highly valued internationally. Besides, there are also traditional crafts and photographs. They show Quanzhou’s living culture and traditions.
8. What do we know about the Quanzhou ship?
A. It was a cargo ship filled with goods.
B. It was a ship sailing to other countries.
C. It was a large ship about 24 meters wide.
D. It was an old ship found on an island.
9. Where is the exhibition “Ship of Peace” being held?
A. In the sea near Beijing. B. In the sea near Quanzhou.
C. At the plaza in Quanzhou. D. At the plaza in Beijing.
10. Why was Quanzhou added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2021?
A. For its importance in sea trade. B. For its old buildings.
C. For the successful exhibition. D. For the amazing sea.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Ways of ancient shipbuilding. B. Things in the exhibition.
C. Living culture and traditions. D. Dehua white porcelain.
D
Have you ever had something good happen to you and felt like shouting it from the housetops? Sharing good news with others and receiving an enthusiastic response in return has been tied to many good results, including closer relationships and greater happiness. Now, a new study suggests another advantage of sharing the good things: more feelings of thankfulness.
The researchers started by asking 300 attendees how often they would like to share good news, and how other people in their lives generally responded to their good news. Then, six times a day for ten days, the researchers asked the attendees to report on how thankful they were at that time, how recently they’d had a social meeting, whether they’d shared good news with that person, and how close they felt to the person as a result.
After that, the researchers studied the results to look for styles. They found those who shared good news with others felt more thankful at the time and closer to the person with whom they shared the news. In addition, people who would like to share good news and receive enthusiastic responses were generally the most thankful in the group.
Sharing good news calls attention to the good things happening in your life, says Alexandra Gray, study co-writer of Northeastern University. For example, you might tell a friend what a great time you had over the holidays, and in recounting what happened, you can re-experience the good feelings and become even more thankful.
Getting an enthusiastic response to your good news is also important, says Gray, because it makes you feel connected and cared for in a way that improves your relationship, and also leads to thankfulness.
Though there’s still more research to be done, Gray suggests people not hesitate to share their good news with others, or on showing enthusiasm when others share good news with them. We all have a role to play in helping good news spread.
12. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By studying the attendees’ daily reports.
B. By noticing the attendees’ social meetings.
C. By following the attendees’ interactive behaviors.
D. By changing the attendees’ thoughts about sharing.
13. What does the underlined word “recounting” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Hiding. B. Considering. C. Restating. D. Questioning.
14. What can we learn from enthusiastic responses to shared good news?
A. They influence more friends.
B. They show the listener’s mindset.
C. They increase the sharer’s self-acceptance.
D. They make people more connected with others.
15. What is the main finding of the research mentioned in the text?
A. Social meetings are key to close relationships.
B. Sharing good news helps build thankfulness.
C. Enthusiastic listeners have the best friendships.
D. Daily reporting improves one’s happiness.

Perhaps the next time you get up in the morning, you can try this. Slowly get up and sit at your bed for a few minutes. ____18____ You can shut your eyes if you feel that helps. The important thing is not to let any hurried thoughts fill your mind. Just be present, with no thoughts of the past or future. In these few quiet minutes to yourself, you will feel refreshed!

•Get moving
Do you often lock yourself in your room, finishing up your school work or playing video games? ____20____ Playing sports or simply cycling helps reduce the body’s stress and lift your mood. It has long been studied by scientists that even five minutes of exercise can have anti-anxiety effects!
These are three simple ways to feel less anxious and stressed. You would need to maintain these practices, of course. However, when you see the improvements in your mental well-being, it’s worth the efforts. Give them a try. Your mind will thank you for it.
A. Sit at your bed
B. Live in the present
C. Let the body and mind feel the peace.
D. Instead, take mealtime as a time to enjoy your food.
E. Then it is time to get out of the chair and have some fun.

I love to play the piano and enjoy performing my music, so when the annual winter recital (演奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs. My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You and your sister should perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living, ”my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the elderly there would really appreciate the music and you could each play more than just two songs. ”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the seniors with some lively tunes. My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for us to perform during the Sunday dinner hour in two weeks. I worked hard to polish up fifteen pieces, including many old classics. My sister and I decided to take turns playing throughout the hour.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, we entered the spacious dining room where a shiny black electric grand piano stood waiting. The room was filled with elderly residents enjoying dinner, yet despite the conversations, isolation hung in the air.
We were immediately greeted by Phyllis, an old woman in charge of Carriage House. When I told her we had come to play the piano, she seemed quite pleased flashing us a bright smile. Phyllis announced to the room, “These two girls have come to sing and let’s welcome them”. As she handed me the microphone, there was scattered applause. “Hi, my name is Baylie,” I said with a smile. “Hi, I’m Chloe,” my sister said shyly. “We have come here to entertain you with some piano songs. We hope you enjoy our performance,” I enthusiastically announced.

【36题详解】
考查主谓一致和动词时态。句意:对于学习中文来说,单词的正确发音是非常重要的。主语是“the correct pronunciation of the words”,为单数概念,且陈述的是客观事实,应用一般现在时。故填is。
故填that/which。

【43题详解】
考查时态和语态。句意同上。此处描述客观事实,用一般现在时;“how different sounds ____ (make)”是宾语从句,从句中主语different sounds与动词make之间是被动关系,用被动语态,主语是复数,be动词用are。故填are made。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
I sat down on the hard bench and turned to my first song.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After performing, I noticed Phyllis wiping tears from her eyes.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】A possible version:
I sat down on the hard bench and turned to my first song. My initial nervousness was quickly replaced by excitement as I began playing my songs. I found myself truly enjoying the performance, and so did my sister. The dinner hour flew by smoothly. Some of the elderly swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped their toes or snapped their fingers. I was amazed how the melodies brought such joy to their faces. What began as a standard dinner hour extended to ninety minutes. As it concluded, I gathered my music and joined my sister at the front and curtsied as the crowd wholeheartedly applauded.
After performing, I noticed Phyllis wiping tears from her eyes. She slowly approached us and told us many of the elderly there do not have families that visit them often, and tragically some do not even have families at all. Our performance really made their day and eased their loneliness. It struck me that no matter how young we are, we still have the power to make a difference in the world and spread kindness to those desperately in need of it. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, because it led to us sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
