Others say that life is hard enough. But I guess I like to make things difficult on myself, because I do that all the time, every day and on purpose. That’s because I believe in disrupting my comfort zone. When I started out in the entertainment business, I made a list of people who I thought would be good to me. Not people who could give me a job or a deal, but people who could shake me up, teach me something, challenge my ideas about myself and the world. So I started calling up experts in all kinds of fields. Some of them were world-famous. Of course, I didn’t know any of these people and none of them knew me. When I called these people up to ask them for a meeting, they weren’t always friendly. And even when they agreed to give me some of their time, the results weren’t always what one might describe as pleasant. Take, for example, Edward Teller, the father of the hydrogen bomb (氢弹). It took me a year of begging to get him to agree to meet with me. And then what happened? He laughed at me and insulted me. But that was okay. I was hoping to learn something from him — and I did, even if it was only that I’m not that interesting to a physicist with no taste for our pop culture. Over the last 30 years, I’ve produced more than 50 movies and 20 television series. I am successful and, in my business, pretty well-known. So why do I continue to subject myself to this sort of thing? The answer is simple: Disrupting my comfort zone, bombarding myself with challenging people and situations — this is the best way that I know to keep growing. And to paraphrase (解释) a biologist I once met, if you’re not growing, you’re dying. So maybe I’m not the best surfer on the north shore, but that’s okay. The discomfort, the uncertainty, the physical and mental challenge that I get from this — all the things that too many of us spend our time and energy trying to avoid — they are precisely the things that keep me in the game. 1. What does the underlined word “disrupting” mean? A. Setting up. B. Messing up. C. Benefiting from. D. Making progress in. 2. Why did the author keep calling for a meeting with certain people? A. They were likely to give him a job. B. They were all people willing to help those in need. C. They might keep him challenging himself. D. Their professional knowledge was of little help to him. 3. When the author finally met with Edward Teller, ________. A. he learned something from the unpleasant experience B. he thought it was worth years of waiting C. he found it was a mistake to arrange the meeting D. he was ready to be laughed at by him 4. We can conclude from the article that the author is ________. A. interested and talented in many fields B. ambitious and generous C. strong-willed and motivational D. humorous and inspiring B I meet regularly with a few friends and we ask one another an important question. We ask: “How is it with your soul?” It’s a bigger question than “How are you fueling?” It includes body, mind, spirit, relationship — everything. I love that question. It reminds me to check in with myself from time to time. And I appreciate that there are a few other people that really want to know. So let me ask you — how is it with your soul? And how would you answer these related questions? 1 Do you regularly take time to FEED your soul? Human beings need nourishment (营养) beyond the physical. I’m told that a hummingbird flaps its wings some 50-80 times a second. It must eat constantly to work that hard. It takes much energy simply to live. We, too, must feed our minds and spirits as well as our bodies if we intend to be fully healthy. This may include meditation (冥想) or the practice of other spiritual disciplines (训练). Other possibilities include doing yoga, reading uplifting books or simply contacting an old friend. Without constant nourishment, our bodies, minds, spirits and even our relationships will grow weak. 2. Do you REST your soul? Charles Darwin said: “If I had my life to live over again, I would make a rule to read some poetry and listen to some music at least once a week.” What rests your soul? In our multi-tasking lives, sometimes the best thing we can do is to do nothing. I occasionally like sitting quietly, listening to soft music and letting my soul be at peace. 3. How do you CHEER your soul? One of the greatest gifts you have been given is the gift of laughter. And it is a gift you can never use enough. My own experience is that when I feel down, disheartened and discouraged, the cause is not too much suffering; it is too little joy. Where I find joy, I find life. So, how did you do with those questions? This may be a good time to check in with yourself. Make sure you ask the big question: how it is with your soul? Then listen carefully. Your soul may have something significant to tell you. 5. Why does the author love the question “How is it with your soul”? A. It shows people really care about each other. B. It's a good way to start a conversation with strangers. C. It reminds people to examine themselves. D. It's a big question that not everyone can answer. 6. What can people do to feed their soul according to the article? a listen to music b. yoga c. read good books d. contact old friends A. a, b, c B. a, c, d C. a, b, d D. b, c, d 7. What can we learn from the author’s experience? A. figure out what made you feel that way. B. ignore the suffering in life. C. allow your soul to rest at peace. D. find the joy in life. C In any given week, about four dozen kids visit Dr. David Abramson’s preschool-like clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. And while most of them are barely old enough to speak, because of Dr. Abramson and the groundbreaking medical procedure he has created for a rare and potentially deadly eye cancer called retinoblastoma, they can see. In the past, if the cancer didn’t respond well to then-available treatments, survival required removing the cancerous eye. The parents, however, will often choose to let their children die with their eyes intact rather than live without them. “This was a transformational change in our field,” says Dr. Abramson, who began using the technique in 2006. “Overnight, we went from taking out children’s eyes to not taking out children’s eyes.” But there’s an aspect of the technique that Dr. Abramson doesn’t talk about much, even though it is as inspirational as the technique itself. He refused to patent it. Pursuing a patent, he feared, would have meant the technique would be kept secret for a long period of time while the paperwork was approved by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office. In the meantime, untold numbers of children would have suffered and perhaps died. Patent experts wouldn’t make a guess on exactly how much money Dr. Abramson left on the Table by not patenting his procedure. But the purpose of a medical procedure patent is that it allows a doctor to profit by teaching others to perform the procedure. “I want people to know that when I do something, it’s from my scientific heart, not because I have any financial benefit,” he says. “And ultimately, our goal is to help children. Our driving force in this is not to make money. ” 8. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. Eyes. B. Parents. C. Children. D. Treatments. 9. Why didn’t Dr. Abramson get the technique patented? A. He feared that the technique might be kept secret forever. B. He didn’t like the idea of teaching others about the technique. C. The application process meant many sufferings and even deaths. D. The application process would require too much money and time. 10. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? A. To introduce an eye cancer. B. To give credit to Dr. Abramson. C. To recommend an evolutionary cure. D. To show the difficulty of a patent application. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Find Your Self-worth Do you measure your personal self-worth based on what others think of you?
