He has drawn the attention of the world with his groundbreaking generation of electricity from an air-powered generator (发电机). After seeing the struggles his community faced because they didn’t have enough electricity, Ernest knew he had to do something. He believed that with a bit of creativity and hard work, he could make a difference. Armed with waste materials and a strong passion for invention, Ernest spent months experimenting in his simple workshop. Through trial and error, he improved his design, finally creating a model which was beyond expectation. Ernest’s self-made air-powered generator, made from repurposed and old parts and locally sourced materials, operates on a very simple principle (原理). Pressed air is channeled through a series of turbines (涡轮) and generators, producing clean and renewable energy with little environmental impact. Since displaying his invention, Ernest has become a local hero in Chinguwo Village, with his air-powered generator providing a lifeline to the community as far as electricity is concerned. Nine homes in his village are now lit up around the clock, which has left his villagers amazed and expecting that his invention could benefit them all. He hopes to make his invention reach even more communities in need across Malawi and beyond, with the support of local authorities and international organizations. “Electricity is a basic necessity. My goal is to empower as many people as possible with clean and renewable energy,” Ernest stressed. Ernest’s impressive story serves as an inspiration to other inventors around the world, proving that there is no age limit to having a meaningful effect. With strong determination and limitless creativity, Ernest has begun a transformation in energy generation that promises to shine for generations to come. 24. People are increasingly using AI tools in their daily personal and professional lives. A significant amount of heat is produced by the energy required to power the tools. This heat is released into data centers, which provide those AI systems with the computational support and storage space they need to function. There are no regulations for AI and no laws requiring technology companies to deal with the problem. That’s led scientists like Shaolei Ren, an associate professor at UC Riverside, to investigate this question independently. As he notes, cooling down the data centers requires an enormous amount of water, similar to the amount used by tens of thousands of residents (居民). “When you use water for a shower, for example, it can be repurposed,” says Ren, whose research is focused on how to make AI more socially and environmentally responsible. “When water is evaporated (蒸发) to cool down a data center, it’s gone.” Even before the current AI development, data centers’ water and energy demands had steadily (稳定地) increased. In 2022, according to Google, its data centers used over five billion gallons of water, 20 percent more than in 2021; Microsoft used 34 percent more water companywide in 2022 than in 2021. AI stands only to compound the existing resource demand that data centers create for the global energy system: In 2026, electricity consumption at data centers because of the increasing use of AI will double the amount in 2022, the International Energy Agency says. “I explain it in terms my kid understands,” says Ren. “If you have a conversation with ChatGPT for 10 to 50 questions and answers, it will use about 500 milliliters of water, or the size of a standard bottle of water. This shocking water consumption shows how necessary it is for the technology industry to put more money in and develop energy-saving AI to cut down on such waste to ensure the digital inventions don’t come at the expense of our planet’s resources.” 28. What is the primary issue discussed in the text? A. The safety risks of AI. B. The limited computational support. C. The energy consumption by AI. D. The high cost of building data centers. 29. How does water used for data centers differ from shower water? A. It’s cleaner in quality. B. It cannot be reused. C. It consumes less water. D. It’s treated with chemicals. 30. What does the underlined word “compound” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Slow down. B. Connect with. C. Add to. D. Smooth out. 31. What’s the purpose of Ren’s words in the last paragraph? A. To encourage the use of AI. B. To highlight the power of AI. C. To provide the exact data for researchers. D. To call for the development of greener AI. 28. C 29. B 30. C 31. The researchers studied 134 babies, 67 at 12 months and 67 at 15 months in a three-part task. The babies played on the floor while often listening to parents talk about grapes in a conversation about more familiar fruits like apples and bananas. A week later, the researchers presented babies with words they understand, paired with an image of the object, such as apples and bananas, to which it referred. Then, babies heard a new word while the image of a novel object grapes was hidden from their view. Finally, two novel objects grapes and knives appeared and babies were asked, “Where are the grapes?” 15-month-olds, but not 12-month-olds, looked longer at the novel fruit grapes than the novel object knives. Although they had never seen any object paired with that novel word, 15-month-olds could use contextual information to correctly connect new words with unseen objects. “The study shows that even babies who are just beginning to say their first words learn from the language they hear, even if the objects or events being discussed are not present,” senior author Sandra Waxman said. The study provides new information for the developmental origins of the human ability to learn about things that are not perceived (感知). It also begins to address how, and how early, the human mind can create ideas of objects and events never experienced directly. This new work stresses the power of language in babies’ daily lives. The results of the study show that by 15 months, babies naturally use the linguistic (语言的) context in which a new word appears to build a point of its meaning that will support later learning. “When babies hear new words like grapes in a conversation when there are no grapes around, parents don’t waste the opportunity to home in on its meaning,” Waxman said. “We now know this is beneficial to babies’ language learning.” 32. What does the new study focus on? A. What language 15-month-olds can learn. B. How babies practice their learned words. C. Why babies prefer listening to language about objects. D. Whether conversational context helps babies recognize objects. 33. How was the study carried out? A. By measuring babies’ brain waves. B. By comparing babies’ reactions. C. By monitoring babies’ pronunciation. D. By interviewing babies’ parents. 34. What is Waxman’s attitude toward the study results? A. Debatable. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Uncaring. 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Practical value of the findings. B. Methods of on-site testing. C. Future direction for the study. D. Disadvantages of the study. D 33. B 34. C 35. 【36题详解】 根据上文“Nowadays, many teenagers are suffering from fashion stress. They struggle to find their identities because they fill their minds with acceptance from friends, parents and social media.(如今,许多青少年正承受着时尚带来的压力。 37题详解】 根据后文“What is in this season may not be cool the next time. Don’t get stuck in thinking about the clothes to wear because it will only make you confused. The first thing you should consider is the comfort. There’s no point in wearing the latest trends (趋势) if you are not absolutely comfortable. But if you are, then that’s great!(这个季节流行的东西可能下次就不流行了。 【38题详解】 根据上文“The trends that many people follow also came from their fashion identity. That identity is theirs, and we cannot follow ideas that are socially acceptable every time. Make your own fashion identity. It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as you still dress properly for the occasion. For example, in the office, you probably wear smart casual 是对该例子的延伸补充,且后一句“This is the way to build your fashion identity.(这便是塑造个人时尚个性的方式)”中的“this”,正是指代G句的具体做法,形成直接的指代衔接。 You go out, then find someone who has the same clothes as yours. Following trends means you are one of them. Most of us buy our clothes from the stores and we know we’re not the only one with the same design.(时尚潮流意味着模仿。 【40题详解】 根据上文“If you feel stressed for not buying a particular dress, don’t feel bad. You’re not alone. Not everyone can afford the clothes that they want.(如果你因为没有买某件特定的裙子而感到焦虑,那也没关系。别太自责了。这种情况并非个例。并非每个人都能买得起自己想要的衣服)”以及后文“It is a practical guide that helps you focus on what truly suits you. Remember, confidence doesn’t come from a price — it comes from wearing what feels right for you.(这是一本实用指南,能帮助您明确自己真正适合的款式。请记住,自信并非源自价格,而是源自穿着让自己感觉舒适自在的服饰)”可知,所在段落围绕“不必因买不起衣服而焦虑”展开,前一句明确“不是每个人都能买得起自己想要的衣服”,A句是对该观点的提炼,点明缓解这种焦虑的关键是“考虑自己的经济实力”。A句“考虑钱包”符合语境。故选A。 On Sunday, Nov. 2, 18-year-old Thomas Ruzzano was at the movie theater in Mizner Park. He created all sorts of clever machines. His workshop was filled with strange devices, such as a clock predicting the weather and a flying bicycle powered by wind-up springs. However, Mr. Lee’s greatest pride was his 11-year-old son David. The boy was always full of energy and curiosity, sharing his father’s passion for problem-solving and incredible creativity. They often spent weekends working together, turning gears (齿轮) and wires into fun and useful tools. One day, when they were at an amusement park, David was attracted to a bouncy castle Watching the children playing inside, David thought about his ideal playground, which presented mental and physical challenges, while being interactive. An image came across his mind. “Dad, let’s build a big maze (迷宫) here! One that’s fun and tricky, with surprises at every turn!” David shouted, eyes wide with eagerness. Mr. Lee smiled and patted his son on the shoulder, “That’s a great idea! Let’s make it the best maze the world has ever seen.” Wasting no time, Mr. Lee contacted the owner of the amusement park and told the plan. The owner was very happy with it because the park just needed a new and special attraction, and he agreed immediately. Soon, they were hard at work in an empty corner of the park. David thought up fun challenges and Mr. Lee applied himself to designing the hidden sign system to guide people. After weeks of construction, the maze was finished. The once-empty corner was transformed into an attractive place. It stood tall and mysterious under the sun, waiting to welcome every visitor who wanted to walk in. Finally the maze was open to the public. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version Finally the maze was open to the public. Laughter rang out everywhere as people solved exciting challenges at stops and cried out in surprise at the little gifts that were waiting around each turn. Some visitors got a bit lost but still had fun finding their way out. At the end of the day, everyone talked about how fun the maze was and it quickly became the park’s most loved spot. Watching the happy crowds, Mr. Lee and David realized their teamwork had created something truly special, and all their efforts felt more than worthwhile. 词汇激活 行为类 ①急忙:hurry/rush ②意识到:realize/be aware of ③解决:solve/address 情绪类 ①激动的:excited/thrilled ②快乐的:happy/glad 【点睛】[高分句型1] Laughter rang out everywhere as people solved exciting challenges at stops and cried out in surprise at the little gifts that were waiting around each turn.(运用了as引导时间状语从句,that引导的定语从句) [高分句型2] Watching the happy crowds, Mr. Lee and David realized their teamwork had created something truly special, and all their efforts felt more than worthwhile.(运用了省略that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025—2026学年度第一学期期末自主练习高一英语 注意事项: 1. What is the woman planning to do on Saturday? B In Malawi, a poor African country, a 19-year-old student Ernest Andrew, a native of Chinguwo Village, is making waves with his creative solution to the country’s energy challenges. 24. What problem did Ernest intend to solve for his community? A. The poor transportation. B. The serious air pollution. C The absence of clean water. D. The shortage of electricity. 25. What do we know about the air-powered generator? A. It’s eco-friendly and low-cost. B. It turned out perfect on the first try. C. It was produced by a local company. D. It makes use of non-reusable materials. 26. Which of the following best describes Ernest? A. Traditional and selfless. B. Creative and responsible. C. Hard-working and honest. D. Forward-looking and humorous. 27. What is the main idea of the text? A. A teen inventor electrifies his village. B. The renewable energy gains popularity. C. A new generator has jumped onto the market. D. The power plant has reached a new milestone. C AI has a water problem, which worries us a lot. A To encourage the use of AI. B. To highlight the power of AI. C. To provide the exact data for researchers. D. To call for the development of greener AI. D A new study by developmental scientists at Northwestern University and Harvard University offers the first proof that babies as young as 15 months can identify an object they have learned about from listening to language — even if the object remains hidden. Nowadays, many teenagers are suffering from fashion stress. They struggle to find their identities because they fill their minds with acceptance from friends, parents and social media. ____36____ Here’s how to ease the fashion stress and start believing in yourself. ____37____ What is in this season may not be cool the next time. Don’t get stuck in thinking about the clothes to wear because it will only make you confused. The first thing you should consider is the comfort. There’s no point in wearing the latest trends (趋势) if you are not absolutely comfortable. But if you are, then that’s great! The trends that many people follow also came from their fashion identity. That identity is theirs, and we cannot follow ideas that are socially acceptable every time. Make your own fashion identity. It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as you still dress properly for the occasion. For example, in the office, you probably wear smart casual (休闲的) clothes. ____38____ This is the way to build your fashion identity. Fashion trends mean copying. You go out, then find someone who has the same clothes as yours. Following trends means you are one of them. Most of us buy our clothes from the stores and we know we’re not the only one with the same design. ____39____ The best way to go about this is to wear it differently. If you feel stressed for not buying a particular dress, don’t feel bad. You’re not alone. Not everyone can afford the clothes that they want. ____40____ It is a practical guide that helps you focus on what truly suits you. Remember, confidence doesn’t come from a price — it comes from wearing what feels right for you. A. Consider your wallet. B. Fashion doesn’t last forever. C. So how will you stand out? D. Are the clothes comfortable for you? E. An expensive classic coat goes with everything. F. Ultimately, fashion pressures come from the influence of others. G. After weeks of construction the maze was finished. The once-empty corner was transformed into an attractive place. It stood tall and mysterious under the sun, waiting to welcome every visitor who wanted to walk in. Finally the maze was open to the public. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
