Vanessa, who is a researcher of human behaviour once said that Tony the Tiger has some of the best body language we can learn from. The picture is Tony the Tiger’s typical (典型的) pose on every cereal (麦片) box across America. Researchers have found that the broader we stand, the more powerful we feel. So by examining Tony’s pose, we see that he is standing very broadly with his feet. If you look closer, you’ll see he is pointing upwards, as if he were saying, “I am going up.”or “__▲__” If you look at Tony again, you can see his smile lines reach almost all the way up to his eyes. His smile is not only open, but it is hugely expressive. This smile design makes Tony look unbelievably happy, excited and optimistic. Tony the Tiger always faces forward. When we are talking with people face to face, we are showing a sign of respect. So if you look at the cereal box, you may feel like Tony is paying attention to you and this is exactly what kids like to see. An interesting study found that 57 out of the 86 cereal boxes had characters (角色) looking down. Imagine a child is walking around in the supermarket, hand in hand with his or her mum. The small child is looking up at all the boxes and sees the cereal characters looking down at them. When the child looks up and makes eye contact with the box, this attracts the child’s attention to that character. Making eye contact is great because it can increase feelings of love and interest! Great body language during the speech draws the audience’s attention to your points, and helps you connect with your listeners and build up a good relationship. Next time you are going to speak in public, just think about Tony the Tiger! ( ) 1. What is the best sentence for “ __▲__” in Paragraph 2? A. This is me. B. I’m No.1. C. Who are you? D. Why not? ( ) 2. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about? A. Making eye contact with people is helpful. B. Characters can attract children by looking up. C. The number is useful to the study on characters. D. Many cereal boxes have characters looking down. ( ) 3. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To introduce Tony the Tiger. B. To tell people how to make a speech. C. To talk about Vanessa’s interesting study. D. To help people have better body language. B Words: about 300 Time: 9 minutes 难易度 ★★★★☆ Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. Research finds that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly possible that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes, cats and dogs have a good relationship. However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression (好斗) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body language is just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away, it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission (顺从). In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found something surprising. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk“Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk“Cat”. What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other’s body language, showing that the two may have more in common (共同的) than we thought. Once familiar (熟悉) with each other’s body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go more than pets — to people who don’t get along well, including neighbours, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, why can’t people do? ( ) 1. What does the underlined word “swimmingly” mean in Paragraph 1? A. Early. B. Well. C. Mostly. D. Quickly. ( ) 2. What may cause cats and dogs to fight? A. They are cold to each other. B. They look away from each other. C. They are introduced at an early age. D. They misunderstand each other’s body language. ( ) 3. Which following is TRUE about cats and dogs in Paragraph 4? A. They have common interests. B. They are not so smart as we thought. C. They have a common body language. D. They are less different than we thought. ( ) 4. What can we learn from cats and dogs in the last paragraph? A. We should know more about animals. B. We should live in peace with animals. C. We should learn more body language. D. We should learn to get along well with others. 阅读填空:Words: about 290 Time: 7 minutes 难易度 ★★★☆☆ Have you ever been stuck (犯愁) for words? 1.________ Luckily, everyone can learn, practise and improve their communication skills. What does communication mean? Listening helps you discover new ideas and understand how others are feeling because you’re seeing things through someone else’s eyes. I am glad that you will travel to China. In China, we usually wave our hands to say“hello” to greet others. We often greet our guests by shaking hands with them. Some people may nod and smile instead of shaking hands. When you meet your Chinese friends, you can greet them by hugging or clapping their hands. Like in many countries, we nod our heads to say “yes” and shake our heads to say “no”. Chinese people will hold their thumbs up if someone does something great. I hope this information will be helpful to you. Please feel free to ask for more information. And I hope that you will have a good time in China. Yours, Li Ming 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
