Celebrating with Clear Sky
Fireworks, long used in celebrations, could commit lasting damage to the delicate environment. Good news — celebrations are getting a high-tech, eco-friendly makeover! Forget loud bangs and smoky skies. Check out these awesome new ways to light up the night!
Drone Shows — Like a Sci-Fi movie
Drone shows generate zero pollution, and they are controlled by precise GPS and intelligent programming, which avoid the fire danger and accidental burns. Drones are reusable, making the shows more cost-effective in the long run compared to one-time fireworks displays.
Digital Fireworks — Just press play
At the Hangzhou Asian Games, AR was used to create stunning 3D fireworks. Audiences at the site can still experience the fireworks atmosphere through a huge screen that is 185 meters wide and 15 meters high. At home, your phone screen might just become the best seat through the live broadcast.
Silent Fireworks — Keep it calm & bright
Quiet household fireworks for birthdays, weddings and housewarmings deliver lively light shows without the scary BOOM. They get rid of the big noise so that kids, pets, and everyone can enjoy the sparkle without the panic. It’s a colorful win for fun and kindness.
Eco Balloons — Fireworks alternatives
Shuyang balloons are made of a special material that breaks down naturally. They can float gracefully, sparkle brightly and burst cheerfully in the grand ceremony. Notably, 80,000 of these eco-friendly balloons were released at the Tiananmen Square, which was very impressive.
Celebrations are evolving — brighter, smarter, and kinder to Earth. Next time you look up at the sky, imagine a show that dazzles without damage. The future of fun is green and gorgeous!

The scent of old paper is a memory that never leaves you. I learned this over forty years as the owner of a bookstore “The Owl’s Nest”, a legendary fixture on a brick street that time forgot. Now, as I tape shut the final cardboard box, all the stories passing through the doors of the store.
I opened the shop in 1979. Back then, bunches of customers arrived with author names written on paper, and we’d dive into the shelves together, pulling out dusty books. Regulars came not just for books, but for human warmth: shared silence over poetry, and a kind clerk’s sincere recommendations.
By the early 2000s, things had changed. Customers browsed our shelves, and then pulled out phones to order the same books online for less. It was a heartbreak — seeing a book loved in person, but abandoned for a better price.
Survival demanded adaptation. My daughter, Sarah, fresh out of college, pushed me to join the very world that competed with us. We created an account @OwlsNestBooks, and started sharing not just new arrivals, but updates of the shop’s life: a photo of a cat napping in the sunlight by the comics, a quote from a beloved novel, and a rare first edition we’d just acquired.
To my astonishment, people responded. A woman in Toronto recalled buying her favorite childhood book from us decades ago. A young man in London asked for recommendations for a gift. The real turning point came when I saw a post by a young man online — he’d shared an old photo taken at our physical bookstore years before, one that showed him proposing to his girlfriend right in the history aisle (过道). The photo had clear little details of our store, making it instantly recognizable to anyone who’d ever stepped foot in it. I shared his post with a heartfelt comment, and the story behind this warm moment spread far and wide. Our online bookstore account gained hundreds of new followers that very day. It was then that I realized people weren’t just looking for a book from us; they were buying into a story, a sense of belonging tied to our little physical store that once brought so many people joy.
24. What made the bookstore appealing in the early days?
A. Its competitive prices. B. Its warm interpersonal atmosphere.
C. Its cozy reading environment. D. Its large collection of new books.
25. How did the bookstore survive in new times?
A. By cutting budgets sharply. B. By running a social media account.
C. By enlarging physical space. D. By cooperating with other bookstores.
26. Why did the proposal event become the turning point?
A. It made the physical store reopen. B. It attracted the attention of other media.
C. It brought a huge offline customer flow. D. It gained new followers as potential customers.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Scent of Old Paper: Memories of a Book Lover
B. Online Shopping: A Threat to Local Bookstores
C. The Struggle Journey: The Survival of a Bookstore
D. The Great Change: The Fall of a Legendary Bookstore
C
Need to learn how to change a car tire or create a monthly budget? “Adulting” courses are on the rise in America. Austin Community College has been running “Adulting101” programmes for six years, helping students from their late teens to mid-40s successfully navigate adulthood. The topics run from basic — how to dress appropriately for a job interview — to advanced, such as how to get a bank loan.
Raffi Grinberg, who created and taught “Adulting 101”, was inspired by his first working day at his company soon after leaving college. Faced with choosing health insurance and retirement plans, he and his well-educated colleagues had to call their parents for advice. “We were graduates of top schools,” he admits, “and we still didn’t know what to do.”
He has since turned his 14-week course into a new book called How to Be a Grown-Up: The 14 Essential Skills You Didn’t Know You Needed. Mr Grinberg writes with a positive tone that anyone who has gone to business school must have experienced, but his book is genuinely informative. A financial beginner will grasp the basics of investing. A gabby mom will be reminded of the importance of listening.
The demand for such courses reflects changes in adolescence. Despite having vast information at their fingertips, many young people lack practical life skills. Consequently, they often find adulting hard, as one student put it. Grinberg adds that young people today are also less interested in what their elders have to offer. “Parents and grandparents are seen behind the times who can’t work the Wi-Fi.” Most importantly, young people are remaining in education for longer, meaning that they mature later and financial independence necessarily comes later. Adulting is, in fact, hard. The world is more complex than a couple of generations ago. The lessons don’t just teach skills — they empower people to embrace adulthood.
28. Which of the following skills is most likely taught in Adulting101 programmes?
A. Car engine repair. B. Personal budget management.
C Academic learning strategies. D. Developing personal hobbies.
29. What inspired Raffi Grinberg to start the course?
A The release of his first book. B. His confusion over adult issues.
C. His parents’ professional advice. D. The recommendation from colleagues.
30. What does the underlined word “gabby” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Patient. B. Green-handed. C. Humorous. D. Talkative.
31. Which factor contributes most to the young’s late maturity?
A. Extension of schooling. B. Early financial independence.
C. Addiction to the virtual world. D. Hard access to practical life skills.
D
How fast do you listen? Hollywood actor Glen Powell likes 1.0x listening speed, saying, “I want to hear people talk at a normal human rate,” while American comedian Bowen Yang believes 1.8x is the perfect pace. Their debate went viral earlier this year in an advertisement for a streaming platform. It reflects a broader change in how people consume digital media.
Surveys support this observation. A survey showed that 31% of Americans aged 18-29 listen faster than 1x, compared with only 8% of those over 45. To meet this demand, many platforms such as Apple, Netflix and YouTube now provide fast playback(播放)options. Some even allow speeds up to 4x for regular users.
The appeal is easy to understand: faster playback can save a large amount of time. YouTube once reported that its viewers together saved more than 900 years per day thanks to this feature. For busy students and workers, such efficiency is attractive.
The practice has also raised different opinions. From the platforms’ perspective, faster speeds mean users consume more content, which increases advertising income. But many performers argue that something artistic is lost. Reading aloud involves pacing, tone and pause, and rushing may damage the quality of a performance. Imagine the famous monologues(独白)in Hamlet delivered at double speed—much of the meaning would disappear.
But does speeding affect comprehension? The average person speaks at a rate of about 150words per minute, but most brains are capable of processing information faster than that, says Marcus Pearce, a cognitive scientist at Queen Mary University of London. A recent meta-analysis by academics at the University of Waterloo in Canada found that up to 1.5x there was not much of a difference in performance, although scores started to decrease noticeably as playback speeds reached 2.0x. Despite the disagreements, fast playback has become part of daily life for many people. For them, to speed or not to speed is no longer a real question.
32. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Digital media is a topic of many debates.
B. Streaming platforms are part of daily life.
C Hollywood movies are played at a normal rate.
D. People have different needs for listening speed.
33. Why do many platforms introduce faster playback options?
A. To meet artists’ demands. B. To make more profits.
C. To save advertising time. D. To cut production costs.
34. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Hamlet?
A. To stress fast speed harms art. B. To show people favor classic works.
C. To prove actors dislike fast playback. D. To suggest modern audience lacks patience.
35. At what playback speed do listeners start to have comprehension problems?
A. 1.0X. B. 1.5X. C. 1.8X. D. 2.0X.

Living in Harmony with Urban Wildlife

Feeding urban animals bread or snacks may seem kind. But it can hurt their health and make them rely on humans. You can pick natural food sources to care for urban wildlife properly. Plant native flowers, and you will attract bees and butterflies. Grow berry bushes, and squirrels and birds will get safe, healthy food. ___37___
●Respect the boundaries of wild neighbors.
Every animal shows signs when it feels threatened. A bird may cry out an alarm. A fox may glance at you cautiously. ___38___ We can also protect their space in daily life: seal trash cans to stop raccoons from garbage rummaging(翻找),and keep cats indoors to keep birds and cats safe.
● ___39___
Small design changes help urban animals a lot. Green roofs are cozy nests for pigeons and bats. Leave some park corners wild with tall grass, and rabbits will have a place to hide. It turns isolated spots into wildlife pathways. These spaces link up broken habitats. Animals can then move freely without crossing busy roads.
When people see urban animals as neighbors, not pests, they will protect them. Schools can organize nature walks. ___40___ Media can produce more animal science programs. Little by little, such care and understanding will build harmonious cities for all. Harmony is possible for all city residents.

My dad is a phone repairman. He is familiar with the screen with spiderweb cracks — the fight between parents and kids is always an open secret. Over time, he’s become really sensitive about the problem of teenagers glued to their phones. Unluckily, I have become one of them. I always spend hours scrolling through social media, playing games, and ignore family matters.
One rainy evening, I had promised to attend my cousin’s birthday dinner, but I lost track of time while playing an online game and finally told my parents that I had something important to do. When my parents came home to find me still on the couch, my phone in hand, my dad’s voice trembled with anger. “Is the so-called important thing just this? Can’t you prioritize anything over that screen?” I shouted, “It’s nothing but a dinner!” I stormed out of the house with a loud slam of the door. Without looking back, I was ready to teach my parents a lesson by staying far away overnight.
After what seemed like an age, I wandered aimlessly around the wet streets away from home. I was surrounded by the dark night. Suddenly my foot slipped, my phone crashing heavily from my hand onto the hard ground. The screen was full of spider cracks and the phone died instantly. Panic surged through me — without my phone, I had no way to contact others. I had to stay at a bus stop, cold and scared, as the rain poured down.
Deep into the night, there were few vehicles on the road, let alone pedestrians. My eyes grew misty. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, warm yellow headlights cut through the dark ahead. A car rolled slowly and smoothly toward me. The second it came close, my heart jumped.

(1)续写词数应为120个左右;

M: No problem, it's only eight o'clock. We close at 10 o'clock but we stop taking orders after 930.
W: I see I also need to make a dinner reservation for this Saturday.
M: How many people would you like a table for?
W: Four? I will invite my friends for a gathering. I feel like a table by the window.
M: Sorry madam, there is only a table in the corner available but it is not close to the door so it will be quiet there. Is that alright with you?
W: Hmm, okay.
M: Alright, and may I have your name.
W: Bethany, thanks.

B 25. B 26. D 27.

C. Academic learning strategies. D. Developing personal hobbies.
29. What inspired Raffi Grinberg to start the course?
A. The release of his first book. B. His confusion over adult issues.
C. His parents’ professional advice. D. The recommendation from colleagues.
30. What does the underlined word “gabby” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Patient. B. Green-handed. C. Humorous. D. Talkative.
31. Which factor contributes most to the young’s late maturity?
A. Extension of schooling. B. Early financial independence.
C. Addiction to the virtual world. D. Hard access to practical life skills.
B 29. B 30. D 31. A

根据文章第二段“Raffi Grinberg, who created and taught “Adulting 101”, was inspired by his first working day at his company soon after leaving college. Faced with choosing health insurance and retirement plans, he and his well-educated colleagues had to call their parents for advice. “We were graduates of top schools,” he admits, “and we still didn’t know what to do.”(这门课程的开创者兼授课老师Raffi Grinberg,其开课灵感源于大学毕业不久后入职第一天的经历。面对医保选择与退休规划的难题,他和一众受过良好教育的同事,竟都只能打电话向父母求助。“我们都是顶尖院校的毕业生,”他坦言,“可那时依旧手足无措。”)”可知,Raffi Grinberg开设这门课程的灵感源于他大学毕业入职后,面对医保选择、退休规划这类成人问题时的困惑与手足无措,即便他是顶尖院校毕业生,也对这些问题毫无头绪。故选B。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词所在语境“A gabby mom will be reminded of the importance of listening.(……的妈妈们,也能从中重新意识到倾听的重要性。)”可知,这类妈妈会被提醒倾听的重要性,由此可推断“gabby”描述的是话多、爱说话的特质。选项D“talkative”,意为“健谈的”,与此相符。故选D。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Most importantly, young people are remaining in education for longer, meaning that they mature later and financial independence necessarily comes later.(最重要的是,如今的年轻人接受教育的年限变得更长,这意味着他们的心智成熟时间随之延后,经济独立也必然姗姗来迟。)” 故选A。
C. Hollywood movies are played at a normal rate.
A. 1.0X. B. 1.5X. C. 1.8X. D. 2.0X.
D 33. B 34. A 35. D

根据文章第一段“Hollywood actor Glen Powell likes 1.0x listening speed, saying, “I want to hear people talk at a normal human rate,” while American comedian Bowen Yang believes 1.8x is the perfect pace.(好莱坞演员Glen Powell偏爱1倍速,他说:“我想以人类正常的语速听人说话。”而美国喜剧演员Bowen Yang则认为1.8倍速是绝佳的播放速度。)”可知,好莱坞演员Glen Powell偏爱1倍速收听,美国喜剧演员Bowen Yang则认为1.8倍速是最佳播放速度,二人的不同看法能推断出人们对于收听速度有着不同的需求。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“To meet this demand, many platforms such as Apple, Netflix and YouTube now provide fast playback(播放)options. Some even allow speeds up to 4x for regular users.(为满足这一需求,苹果、网飞、油管等众多平台如今都推出了快速播放功能,部分平台甚至向普通用户开放了最高4倍速的播放选项。)”以及第四段“From the platforms’ perspective, faster speeds mean users consume more content, which increases advertising income.(从平台角度来看,更快的播放速度意味着用户能消费更多内容,进而带动广告收入的增长。)”
根据文章第四段“From the platforms’ perspective, faster speeds mean users consume more content, which increases advertising income. But many performers argue that something artistic is lost. Reading aloud involves pacing, tone and pause, and rushing may damage the quality of a performance. Imagine the famous monologues(独白)in Hamlet delivered at double speed—much of the meaning would disappear.(从平台角度来看,更快的播放速度意味着用户能消费更多内容,进而带动广告收入的增长。但许多表演者却认为,倍速播放会让作品丧失部分艺术价值。朗颂的表达本就讲究语速把控、语调和停顿,过快的播放速度会破坏表演的呈现效果。试想一下,《哈姆雷特》中的经典独白若是以两倍速呈现,其中的大部分深意都会荡然无存。)”可知,作者提及《哈姆雷特》中的经典独白,是为了举例论证倍速播放会破坏表演的艺术价值,强调快速播放对艺术的损害。故选A。

Living in Harmony with Urban Wildlife
Cities are not just for people. Squirrel, birds and even deer make their homes here too. These wild neighbors have got used to streetlights and tall buildings. ___36___ This balance turns concrete jungles into lively places where both humans and animals can live well.
●Offer natural food instead of handouts.
A. Create wildlife-human interactions.
B. Thus, their wild survival skills stay sharp.

根据上文“Cities are not just for people. Squirrel, birds and even deer make their homes here too. These wild neighbors have got used to streetlights and tall buildings.(城市并非只为人类而存在。
根据本段小标题“Offer natural food instead of handouts.(提供天然食物而非施舍的食物)”,以及上文“Feeding urban animals bread or snacks may seem kind. But it can hurt their health and make them rely on humans. You can pick natural food sources to care for urban wildlife properly. Plant native flowers, and you will attract bees and butterflies. Grow berry bushes, and squirrels and birds will get safe, healthy food.(给城市里的动物投喂面包、零食,看似是善意之举,实则会损害它们的健康,还会让它们产生对人类的依赖。
根据本段小标题“Respect the boundaries of wild neighbors.(尊重野生邻居的边界)”,以及上文“Every animal shows signs when it feels threatened. A bird may cry out an alarm. A fox may glance at you cautiously.(每种动物感到受到威胁时都会发出信号。
根据下文“Small design changes help urban animals a lot. Green roofs are cozy nests for pigeons and bats. Leave some park corners wild with tall grass, and rabbits will have a place to hide. It turns isolated spots into wildlife pathways. These spaces link up broken habitats. Animals can then move freely without crossing busy roads.(小小的设计改动,能给城市野生动物带来莫大的帮助。绿色屋顶成了鸽子和蝙蝠温暖舒适的巢穴,留些公园角落任高草自然生长,野兔便有了藏身之处。这样的设计能将零散的地块化作野生动物的通行廊道,把破碎的栖息地相互连接,动物们也能就此自由活动,无需穿越车水马龙的道路)”可知,本段核心是建议通过调整城市里的微小设计和细节,为城市动物打造适宜的生存空间。D选项“Adjust urban details to care for the animals.(调整城市细节,关爱动物)”高度概括本段主旨,“Adjust urban details”对应文中的“Small design changes”,“care for the animals”统领全段的具体做法,符合小标题要求。故选D项。
根据上文“When people see urban animals as neighbors, not pests, they will protect them. Schools can organize nature walks.(当人们将城市动物视为邻居而非有害物种时,就会去保护它们。学校可以组织自然徒步活动)”,以及下文“Media can produce more animal science programs. Little by little, such care and understanding will build harmonious cities for all.(媒体可以制作更多的动物科普节目。

At a glance, I recognized it as my parents’ car. My mom rushed out, wrapping me in a warm coat, her eyes red with worry. When we got home, my dad said nothing, but carefully tried to change the phone’s screen and I watched him work. I noticed the deep love my dad had for me, hidden behind his tough and strict exterior. Suddenly, I realized how selfish I had been and my parents just didn’t want me to lose myself in the virtual world. That night, I fell asleep, uneasy and regretful.
The next morning, the repaired phone lay on my bedside quietly. Picking it up, I seemed to feel a soft, subtle warmth. And I apologized to my parents. “I’m sorry for being so rude and ungrateful,” I said. From then on, I made a conscious effort to balance my phone use with family time. I joined my parents for dinners and shared my school life with them. The cracked phone screen became a symbol of our mended relationship—a proof that even when things break, love and understanding can fix them.
