Visitors will be able to get close to — and even touch — 100 life-size sculptures of Indian elephants which are beginning a cross-country journey that aims to raise awareness about conservation. The real-life elephants of the sculptures are personally known to The Coexistence Collective — the community of around 200 artists in southern India who made them.
The sculptures can be seen in Newport, Rhode Island through early September. From there they will head to New York City, Miami, the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana and finally Los Angeles.
The organization is planning to sell the elephants off to raise funds for 22 conservation organizations around the country as the tour progresses. Organizers said 30 sculptures had already been sold off, with prices ranging from $8,000 for a baby elephant to $22,000 for an adult. In Newport, the profit will go to Save the Bay, which works to remove foreign grasses from local wetlands in order to restore the habitats for the birds there.
The enormous life-like sculptures are made out of lantana — a tough foreign grass that’s been encroaching upon the elephants’ natural forest habitat, pushing the animals onto tea and coffee farms where their coexistence with humans has become a genuine challenge.
“Lantana has displaced animals across huge areas in India, because it takes over from herbs and bushes that are food for animals,” said Tarsh Thekaekara, a wildlife conservationist specializing in human-elephant relations. “40 to 50% of many Indian parks are taken over by it.”
Tarsh Thekaekara also hopes that visitors will learn more about how important it is for animals and humans to negotiate shared space, as more places become uninhabitable for both owing to direct human destruction and the impacts of human-caused climate change.
4. What can we learn about the exhibition?
A. Its first stop will be in New York City. B. It includes 100 real elephants from India.
C. The sculptures will be sold at the same price D. All the exhibits are based on identified elephants.
5. The underlined phrase “encroaching upon” in paragraph 4 can be understood as ________.
A. restoring B. damaging C. dividing D. restricting
6. What is Tarsh Thekaekara mainly worried about according to paragraph 5?
A. Public parks in India. B. Impacts of climate change.
C. A harmful foreign grass. D. Human-elephant coexistence.
7. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A guidebook to an exhibition.
C. An advertisement. D. An introduction to an organization.

Group of students is aiming to become the first non-government, non-commercial team to send a rocket to space. The team’s Aurora rocket, set to launch from California this month, is designed to reach a top speed of Mach 5.2 and break through Earth’s atmosphere. If successful, it will be the second student-led team to reach space, and the first to do it with a reusable rocket.
The Karman Space Programme (KSP) was founded by students. They designed the craft, which consists of two separate stages, each with its own engine fuelled (提供燃料) by liquid oxygen and ethanol. Each stage will fire for just over 20 seconds, and the rocket will be travelling at 5522 kilometres an hour at its peak speed. About 100 seconds after launch, it will reach its highest point and then should begin falling back to Earth for a soft landing by parachute (降落伞). KSP’s chairman, Shapol M. says the KSP mission will use multi-stage liquid engines like commercial launchers, recover all sections of the rocket and could, in theory, be turned around for a second launch within 24 hours.
The team is planning to launch Aurora from a site in the Mojave desert in California on 24September. “Launching outside the UK is a huge pain, but there isn’t a place right now to launch up to these altitudes in the UK. It’s a real shame,” says Shapol.
Shapol says it is hard to predict what will happen at launch, but preparations have included tests of many components. The team’s previous rockets include Vega, powered by the same engine as Aurora’s second stage. “We’ve tried to fail as much as possible before, so that we don’t fail on the big one,” says Shapol.
8. What’s special about Aurora rocket?
A. It can be recycled. B. It is the fastest in the world.
C. It is quite profitable. D. It belongs to the government.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The challenge in rocket design. B. The KSP’s new mission.
C. The expected process of the launch. D. The first students’ space shot.
10. What can we learn from Shapol’s words in paragraph 3?
A. It is rather difficult to launch the rocket.
B. Launching outside the UK is unacceptable.
C. The launch has to be carried out in the desert.
D. There is no suitable site for this launch in the UK.
11. What’s Shapol’s attitude to the launch?
A. Objective. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
D
Why do you vividly remember your first day of school or a scary movie, but forget what you had for lunch last Tuesday? A new study suggests the answer involves surprising cells in your brain called astrocytes.
Previously scientists thought these star-shaped cells just provided support to neurons (神经元), the brain’s main nerve cells that create memories. However, research published in Nature shows astrocytes play a much more active role. They help lock in emotional memories for the long term and could be a new target for treating memory disorders like PTSD and Alzheimer’s disease.
To test this, researchers studied mice learning to fear a specific cage where they received a mild, unpleasant shock. They tracked a gene called Fos, which acts as a marker of cell activity when a memory is formed.
The surprise came when the mice returned to the cage days later. While recalling the fearful memory, their astrocytes became highly active in brain regions like the amygdala, the emotion center. This activity was much stronger during the memory recall than during the initial scary event.
The researchers found that after an emotional experience, astrocytes produce special “receptors” on their surface. These receptors act like tags, marking the cells as part of an important memory network. This process takes hours or days, which is exactly how long it takes for a memory to become stable (稳定的).
“This is revolutionary for neuroscience,” said Maite Solas Zubiaurre, a neuroscientist at the University of Navarra in Spain, who was not involved in the study. The long-standing belief was that only neurons stored memories. This discovery “will bring about new methods of treating some memory problems”, potentially by targeting astrocytes to improve memory in health and disease.
12 What’s the main function of astrocytes according to the study?
A. Stirring up fears. B. Creating emotions. C. Stabilizing memory. D. Building connection.
13. Why did researchers track the Fos gene?
A. It controls how long memories last.
B. It directly stores emotional memories.
C. It produces proteins for brain neurons.
D. It marks active cells during memory formation.
14. What is the key significance of this study on astrocytes?
A. It proves that emotional memories can be completely erased.
B. It shows that neurons are not involved in memory formation.
C. It reveals a new approach for developing memory-related treatments.
D. It demonstrates that astrocytes can create memories without neurons.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Memory Role of Astrocytes Rewrites Neuroscience
B. Brain’s “Helper” Cells Are Key to Strong Memories
C. Astrocytes Can Create Artificial Memories in Laboratory
D. New Target for PTSD Treatment Is Discovered in Brain Cells

Can't Resist Junk Food? Study Suggests You Try This Simple Trick
You're tired and hungry. Then you catch a whiff of something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken!____16____A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices.
Let's take a closer look at this process. Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose's attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? What will happen if you're standing in line after a couple of minutes?____17____ And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.
The results of a series of experiments, including field studies at a supermarket and at a middle school cafeteria, show that extended exposure (of more than two minutes) to junk food smell (e. g,cookie smell) leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell (e.g.strawberry smell).____18____That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth, which in turn decreases the desire for consumption of junk food.
____19____When the exposure to smell of healthy food were examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food are not connected with reward in our brain and therefore have little influence on what we desire.
So next time you're feeling you don't have the will power to resist that French fries, it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two. ____20____
A. But wait a minute before you order.
B. It's a response that has been researched.
C. Get the satisfaction with none of the calories.
D. It isn't quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago.
E. However, it's not the same case with smell of healthy food.
F. It's the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied.
G. The brain doesn't necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell or taste.

Every morning, Maya stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair, smoothing her blouse, checking her face one more time. “Do I look fine?” she would ask herself again and again.
At school, she felt invisible. Not like Lily, who wore stylish clothes and laughed loudly in the hallway. Not like Ben, who answered every question loudly, casually and confidently. “Why can’t I be more like them?” she thought to herself.
Last week, the school announced the annual speech contest—Find Your Voice. Maya’s heart jumped. She had written poems in secret for years—about stars, silence, and the way light falls through leaves. This could be her chance to be heard.
Still, she hesitated.
She watched Lily sign up with a smile Ben with a confident wave. No one else seemed afraid.
That night, she opened her notebook. She read her own poems—once, twice. Her voice was soft, but the words felt true.
The next day, she took a deep breath and added her name to the list.
The night before the tryouts, she practiced in her room. “I believe…” she began—then stopped. Her hands trembled. She tried again, but her throat closed up.
On the day of the tryouts, she arrived early. One by one, students performed—bold, loud, even funny. Some made the judges laugh. Then it was her turn.
She stood up. The room went quiet. She opened her mouth—but nothing came out. Her face burned. Her hands shook. She whispered, “Sorry,” and ran out.
In an empty art room, she sat on the floor, head in her hands.
“Hey.”
She looked up. It was Mr. Chen, the drama teacher, holding a cup of tea. “Tough moment?” he asked, sitting beside her.
Maya nodded, eyes wet. “I wanted to say something real... but I froze.”
Mr. Chen smiled gently. “Sometimes the quietest voices have the most to say.” He paused. “You don’t have to be loud to be heard.”
Mr. Chen took Maya’s notebook and paged through it.

A. Objective. B. Optimistic. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.

12. What’s the main function of astrocytes according to the study?
A. Stirring up fears. B. Creating emotions. C. Stabilizing memory. D. Building connection.
13. Why did researchers track the Fos gene?
A. It controls how long memories last.
B. It directly stores emotional memories.
C. It produces proteins for brain neurons.
D. It marks active cells during memory formation.
14. What is the key significance of this study on astrocytes?
A It proves that emotional memories can be completely erased.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】16. A 17. D 18. G 19. E 20. F
【解析】
【分析】本文为说明文,介绍了几项抵制垃圾食品诱惑的技巧。
【16题详解】
根据下一句“A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices."可知,暴露在垃圾食品中至少两分钟会帮助你选择健康食品,所以本句与等待时间有关,表达“但是在预定之前先等一下”。故A选项“但是在预定之前先等一下”切题。故选A。
根据前句“it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two."(最简单的方法是坐在那里闻上一两分钟香甜的味道)与选项中“It’s the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied. (闻到味道与吃到它是一样可以满足愿望的。)承接自然,话题一致。故选F。

【答案】 My Favorite Hands-on Course
In response to the call of nationwide labor education, a series of hands-on courses were launched last term in our school, ranging from planting vegetables to making traditional handicrafts.
Sewing is one of my favorite courses, where I obtained a fundamental knowledge of essential life skills such as sewing a button, knitting a scarf, and making a cushion by operating the sewing machine. It was surely a rewarding and fulfilling experience, which not only enriched our extracurricular life but also helped us acquire practical basic working capabilities for livelihood and form the good habit of labouring.
The hands-on courses have won wide popularity among students and exerted a positive effect on the personal growth of everyone involved. If possible, an exhibition could be held to demonstrate students’ well-designed works and display their creativity.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
She watched Lily sign up with a smile, Ben with a confident wave.

The next afternoon in the classroom, Maya stood before her fellow classmates.

【答案】Mr. Chen took Maya’s notebook and paged through it. A look of amazement crossed his face. “Maya,” he said, “these poems are extraordinary. Your words carry such depth and emotion. You have a gift, and it doesn’t need to be shouted out. A soft voice can be equally, if not more, powerful.” He then gave her some practical advice, like visualizing a supportive audience and speaking from the heart. “Trust in your words. They are your strength,” he added. Maya felt a newfound confidence building up inside her.
The next afternoon in the classroom, Maya stood before her fellow classmates. Her palms were sweaty, but she took a deep breath and started. Her voice, though soft, was steady. As she recited her poems, she could see her classmates’ eyes light up. They were captivated by her unique perspective. When she finished, the room was filled with warm applause. Maya beamed, realizing that she didn’t need to be like others. Her quiet voice was her superpower, and she had finally found her voice in the most beautiful way.
