It can make them feel bad both in their bodies and minds. Some researchers wanted to see if Tai Chi, a special kind of exercise that uses slow movements to help both the body and mind, could help people with fibromyalgia feel better. They studied 226 people with fibromyalgia for a year. Some did regular exercise, and others did Tai Chi, which can be done by anyone, no matter their physical limits. Before starting, the researchers checked how much pain and stress each person had. They chose patients who had a lot of pain and had been dealing with fibromyalgia for about nine years. They divided them into two groups: one did regular exercise, and the other did Tai Chi. Both groups exercised twice a week for an hour. After either 12 or 24 weeks of classes, they were told to practise at home for at least 30 minutes every day. The researchers checked on them every month. They also asked how much pain and other problems the patients had in the beginning, after 12 and 24 weeks, and after the whole year. The results showed that the Tai Chi groups, especially those who practised for 24 weeks, had less pain than the regular exercise groups. The Tai Chi groups also felt less stressed and were better at dealing with their problems. They attended their Tai Chi classes more often. Tai Chi is about moving slowly to exercise all parts of the body. It helps with balance. It also helps with feelings and behaviour. The researchers said, “Tai Chi helped patients with fibromyalgia feel better in their minds and bodies, which might be better for them in the long run.” Many patients have also said that Tai Chi helps them feel better. The researchers’ study adds something more to that. They said, “Tai Chi could help patients feel more confident to manage their condition better. Tai Chi may be especially well suited to the treatment of fibromyalgia.” 39. What can we learn about fibromyalgia? A. Patients’ minds are free of pain. B. A long time is needed to improve it. C. By providing a small electrical support at the right moment, they can keep a heart working properly. Their main problem is that they use batteries. Even the best of them will run out of energy, and changing the batteries requires operations. Since operations are usually best avoided, the search has been on for long-lasting batteries. Different choices have been explored for a long time. Today, pacemakers with lithium batteries (锂电池) last between 5 and 15 years. Zhang Hao, from Shanghai Second Military Medical University, and Yang Bin, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, tried a way to refill a pacemaker’s battery with electricity(电) by getting energy from inside the body. They report in the magazine ACS Nano that they have also used the heart muscle (肌肉) itself to work. Earlier efforts by other scientists to use heart muscle power to run pacemakers depended on piezoelectric materials (压电材料). These materials can be connected to a beating heart and produce electricity when they are slightly deformed (弯曲). This has worked, but not well enough: the output has rarely been over 5 microwatts (微瓦), while most pacemakers require at least ten. Dr Zhang and Dr Yang believed that they could improve the matter by making their piezoelectric materials more dramatically deformed, and then produce 15 microwatts, because the more deformed, the more electricity will be produced. They put their idea to the test in a 50kg pig. It made enough electricity for the pacemaker to work as expected. Whether such an idea will pass human tests remains to be seen. But if it does, the days of pacemakers that need battery changes through operations may not last long. 46. What is a problem with pacemakers according to the first two paragraphs? A. They often go off beat. B. Their energy can be used up. C Operations often influence them. D. They sometimes do harm to hearts. 47. What do we know about piezoelectric materials from this passage? A. They can be used to produce electricity. B. They can deform the heart to make it beat faster. C. They were first used by Zhang Hao and Yang Bin. D. They were proved to produce 15 microwatts in human tests. 48. What does the underlined word “dramatically” probably mean? A. Comfortably. B. Safely. C. Greatly. D. Quickly. 49. What is the best title for this article? A. No Need to Use Pacemakers B. The Problem with Piezoelectric Materials C. The Contribution of Chinese Scientists to Heart Operations D. Chinese Scientists Found a New Way to Improve Pacemakers 【答案】46. B 47. A 48. C 49. 根据文章第1、2段“Their main problem is that they use batteries. This combination (联合) of ice skating and archery (箭术) became popular during the Qing Dynasty. There were three arches (拱门) put on the ice, with a silk ball hung by a rope in the middle of each arch. Players would skate across the ice, led by a person with a flag. Once passing through an arch, they would turn around and try to hit the ball with an arrow. The scene was very powerful, as hundreds of players joined in together, moving in a line like a dragon. In the match, the players were divided into two teams. They competed to catch a ball thrown into the air above ice. Unlike the ancient cuju, players were allowed to pass the ball with their hands and feet. According to historical records, the Qing government included the sport in military (军事的) training, as it could improve players’ endurance (耐力) and strength. This sport was popular in the 18th century. On cold winter days, organizers would water a slope (斜坡) about ten meters in length to create an ice track for competitors. Wearing ice skates, competitors would take turns to slide (滑行) down the slope to show as much of their skating skills as they could. Those who made it down the slope without falling would be the winner. The sport was dangerous and carried a high risk of injury (损伤). 50. Group work is very important in ________. Business World B Fibromyalgia is a long-lasting health problem, which makes people feel pain and have trouble sleeping. D For those whose hearts often go offbeat, pacemakers (心脏起搏器) are lifesavers. C. Operations often influence them. Chinese Scientists Found a New Way to Improve Pacemakers E Winter sports were popular in the north of China hundreds of years ago. A. archery on ice and ice football B. ice football and downhill ice skating C. archery on ice and downhill ice skating D. archery on ice, ice football and downhill ice skating 51. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Downhill ice skating first appeared in the Qing Dynasty. B. Players competed to hit the silk ball before passing through the arch. C. It’s not so hard to win the match of downhill ice skating without getting hurt. D. With a strong mind and full strength, one team may be the winner of Ice football. 52. In which column (栏目) of a newspaper may we read the passage most probably? A. Modern ice sports B. Interesting ancient competitions C. Beauty of Chinese culture D.
