Can you imagine a world without insects? Without ants or flies in your house, it might sound great. However, the results may be out of imagination.
The number of insects has dropped by half in the past few years, according to a British biologist Dave Coulson. You may think small insects are not important. But in fact they are the main part of the species (物种) on Earth.
Insects are indeed on the way to extinction, according to the first review of insect population. The researchers say the main reason for this is the use of pesticides (杀虫剂) because they destroy insects’ living areas. Also, weather change is another important cause.
“Unless we change our ways of producing food, insects will go down the way to extinction in a few years,” the researchers wrote in the review. “This will have huge influences on the planet’s ecosystem (生态系统).”
We need insects to pollinate (授粉) crops. They also break down (分解) dead plants and animals, which can keep the soil healthy. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat and die of hunger. Then, the ecosystem would be off balance.
“If the number of insect species keeps dropping, this will have bad influences on both Earth’s ecosystem and the survival of us humans,” said one of the writers of the review.
“The first step to stop this is to let more people understand the values of the natural world,” he suggests. “The best place to start is from our children, who should realize environmental protection from an early age.”

A pollution B. death C. harm D. protection

I was filled with doubts and worries until my grandfather told me to stand tall.
For me, height was my trouble. I was much taller than the other girls, so I often bent(弯曲)my body at the back of the line. I had always felt unsafe as the tallest student of my class in Bala Cynwyd. And I wasn’t looking forward to entering the ninth grade.
My grandfather didn’t laugh at me. Instead, whenever I tried to bend myself in order to appear shorter, he would tell me, “Stand straight and tall, Alisa.” I trusted my grandfather more than anyone else in my childhood. And whenever I was afraid of something, he always told me stories of his life.
My grandfather grew up in war-torn(受战争严重破坏的)Europe. “Stand straight, and stand tall” meant something else then. After the war, he went to America. He lived a hard life. “If they could do it, why couldn’t I? Stand straight, and stand tall,” he often reminded himself. Thanks to the help of a friend, my grandfather got a job. He once told me that he was very nervous at first. He was trying to learn not only this hard new job but also a new language.
“Stand straight, and stand tall,” he would always tell himself. I am so proud of my grandfather. After listening to my grandfather’s unusual experiences, I have changed the way I look at my own life.

We all might be angry now and then. We get angry after hours and hours of homework. We may be angry at a friend’s lie or distrust.Sometimes, we feel even worse after arguing with others or showing our angry in some way. Here are some things you can do to calm yourself and control your temper (脾气) before it gets control of you.
Realize that you’re angry. When you’re angry, you notice it in your body. You feel hot and worried.Anger will often cause changes in our body, such as rapid heartbeat or breathing. If you’re not physically feeling it, you might hear it in the sound of your voice. One way to realize that you’re getting angry is to listen to the volume of your voice. Is it increasing? That’s a sign that you’re getting angry. Once you notice this, try to reduce your voice. Try not to speak too loudly. That will help you calm down.
Follow your body’s signals, safely and slowly. Take deep breaths, in and out. Ask yourself what your body wants to do. If your hands want to clench (紧握) , or you want to shout, you can try to do them safely and slowly. This will stop you from your angry thoughts.
Give yourself a time out. If you find that your friend lied to you and you feel really angry, what will you do next? Have a fight with him? I don’t think so. Walking away gives you time to calm down and collect your thoughts. This also helps you control anger and the situation. Of course, don’t just get away from the problem. Let your friend know that you just need a little private space. Then you may have a good talk with him.
When you find a proper way to realize and control your anger, there will be a happier and wiser you.

48. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Try not to speak loudly when you’re getting angry.
B. Walking away when you get angry gives you time to calm down.
C. Giving yourself a time out will make all the problems go away.

All of us may have experienced embarrassing moments. It could have been the time when you pronounced a simple word wrong in class, wore your T-shirt backwards, talked about someone else without realizing that they were right behind you, or secretly tried to take a picture of someone while the flash was on.
Though these embarrassing moments don’t harm us a lot, they come back from time to time and make us feel upset. Even if these moments may have faded (消失) after some time, we would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. In fact, these feelings may last for years. When these kinds of feelings return, they are known as a “cringe attack (羞愧综合征)”.
I personally get a quite uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my parents took me to when I was younger. I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself. My parents shouted at me in front of everyone—for being so selfish. From then on every time I put a strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing scene back.
Why do these “cringe attacks” still pop up in our daily lives even though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago? According to researchers, our brains give special attention to feelings that can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the memory will be. If you have a highly embarrassing or highly emotional (情绪激动的) moment, no matter what it is, your brain will try to catch it.
So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be more objective (客观的) about our past selves. Consider that you are not alone in your embarrassment—everyone fails or makes silly, embarrassing mistakes. Instead of just trying to forget what we did, we should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about how we can change for the better.
49. The writer talk about his own experience in Paragraph 3 _________.
A. to show his love for strawberries B. to give an example of cringe attacks
C. to explain that he was not really selfish D. to show everyone has embarrassing moments
50. According to Paragraph 4, the more emotional we are, _________.
A. the more exciting life we will live
B the shorter the event will stay in our memory
C. the better we will remember about the event
D. the more embarrassed we will feel about the event
51. What’s the writer’s suggestion about dealing with embarrassing moments?
A. Taking them seriously. B. Just forgetting about them.
C. Trying to improve ourselves. D. Comparing them with others’.
52. The structure of the passage may be ________.
A. B. C. D.

Follow your body’s signals, safely and slowly. Take deep breaths, in and out. Ask yourself what your body wants to do. If your hands want to clench (紧握) , or you want to shout, you can try to do them safely and slowly. This will stop you from your angry thoughts.
Give yourself a time out. If you find that your friend lied to you and you feel really angry, what will you do next? Have a fight with him? I don’t think so. Walking away gives you time to calm down and collect your thoughts. This also helps you control anger and the situation. Of course, don’t just get away from the problem.

C. the better we will remember about the event
D. the more embarrassed we will feel about the event

On a small farm, a lonely pig named Wilbur met a kind spider named Charlotte. Wilbur was sad because he would soon be sent to the butcher (屠宰场). But Charlotte had an idea—she spun (编织) magical words into her web to save him.
First, she wrote “Some Pig”. People were amazed and came to see the special pig. Then she wrote “Great”, “Bright”, and “Humble (谦逊的)”. Everyone thought Wilbur was wonderful, and the farmer decided to keep him safe.
But spinning webs was hard work. Charlotte grew weak. Before she died, she laid eggs and asked Wilbur to protect them. Soon after, she passed away. The farm was sad, but Wilbur kept his promise.
When spring came, hundreds of baby spiders hatched. Some stayed, but most crawled away. Wilbur missed Charlotte but remembered her kindness. He grew up happily, knowing true friendship can change lives.
