As a farmer, the land was always at the heart of Andrew Green’s life. But a momentous decision saw him stop using his ground to grow crops, and start using it for the benefit of nature and wildlife. It all started when Andrew dug out a lake to begin the process of creating a 250-acre wetland reserve.
Now Kingfishers Bridge Nature Reserve is celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary this year. Over three decades, its pioneering work has seen huge numbers of creatures and plant species flourishing (蓬勃) as never before. It is now home to more than 420 plant species. 215different birds, 740 different moths and many more species.
Andrew started farming the land with his brother and concentrated on salad crops, sugar beet and some daffodils. However, the banks of the River Cam are on a major bird migration route. That led him to expand the land he was farming into one of the UK’s first rewilding projects, before “rewilding” was even really a term.
“I realized that to make a wetland reserve it needed plenty of water,” Andrew says. “So, I made a lake, and what followed was animals and birds used it every day.” Key to the development was the arrival of James as manager in 2011. James gradually found the right places on land and water, leading to a wonderful nature reserve which he had an extraordinary ability to manage.
They go from a winter with the highest rainfall recorded in decades straight to one of the driest summers on record. That makes it very difficult for animals and habitats that require a nice stable water level and structure to cope with such rapid changes. It means every effort has to be made to manage water for the benefit of the wildlife, and there are currently long-term plans for a big reservoir.
Happily, despite all the difficulties, there’s something to be seen year-round at the nature reserve. Along with beautiful birds and other wildlife, Kingfishers Bridge is now home to herds of water buffalo and Konik ponies which have become huge attractions for visitors.
4. What decision did Andrew make?
A. Creating a wetland park. B. Reintroducing diverse crop varieties.
C. Giving up restoring the farm. D. Returning the farmland to a natural state.
5. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To reveal the scale of the reserve. B. To showcase the success of the reserve.
C. To introduce various species of the reserve. D. To celebrate 30th anniversary of the reserve.
6. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Water challenges in the reserve. B. Efforts to manage water.
C. Rapid changes in water level. D. Plans to build a big reservoir.
7. What do we know about Andrew?
A. He finds the right places for wildlife. B. He has a great ability to purify water.
C. He creates a natural habitat for wildlife. D. He works as manager of Kingfishers Bridge.

Sweeping the cultural and tourism sectors alike, the Lisbon-based experiential platform CultureTable is revolutionizing how travelers engage with local heritage. Labeled the “Uber of cultural immersion”, CultureTable pairs curious visitors with local hosts who offer not only traditional cuisine, but also family stories, handicrafts, and community history. “It’s like stepping into a living museum where each dish preserves a memory and every story carries a distinct moral,” remarks Carlos Mendes, the platform’s founder. This innovative model converts tourists into temporary residents, enabling them to perceive a destination through the lens of those who inhabit it.
The concept for CultureTable originated in 2019, following Mendes s return from a journey across Mexico. He recognized that although he had toured numerous famous historical landmarks, his most profound experience involved learning to prepare traditional food alongside a local family in a modest Oaxacan village. “That afternoon deepened my understanding of Mexican culture and community than any guidebook could convey,” Mendes reflected. Resolved to make such true encounters accessible to others, he developed a platform where locals could provide two-way cultural exchanges. “Travel should exceed mere sightseeing — it ought to be an exchange of narratives and customs,” Mendes said.
Presently, CultureTable functions in over 130 cities of 40 nations, with Mendes noting that merely around 7% of host applications gain approval. Each candidate undergoes evaluation based on guest feedback, assessments of cultural knowledge, and interviews conducted by CultureTable’s curation team. “We seek individuals who don’t merely exhibit culture — they live it,” Mendes states. This strict selection guarantees that each host reflects the authentic character of their community, delivering sincere and memorable experiences to guests. The company further equips hosts with training in cultural storytelling and hospitality, ensuring they can present their heritage both engagingly and respectfully.
“Our hosts range from grandmothers who pass on ancestral recipes, to musicians who interpret folk traditions, and young artists welcoming visitors into their studios. What unites them is a genuine passion for human connection and an extraordinary ability to weave cultural elements into personalized, unforgettable experiences.” Mendes concludes.
8. What does CultureTable highlight in paragraph 1?
A. Local cultural heritage. B. An innovation to taste culture.
C. The sense of community. D. A chance to try traditional food.
9. What did Carlos Mendes learn from his journey?
A. Cultural insight came from personal interactions.
B. Guidebooks best conveyed cultural understanding.
C. Visiting famous historical landmarks mattered most.
D. Traditional tourism platforms needed to be expanded.
10. What message does paragraph 3 convey?
A. Host applications are culturally diverse. B. Post-selection host training is necessary.
C. Host selection criteria are demanding. D. Host approval process is time-consuming.
11. What can be inferred about CultureTable’s hosts from the last paragraph?
A. They shine at cultural communication. B. They share the same career backgrounds.
C. They have a passion for cultural products. D. They focus on presenting ancestral recipes.
D
For decades treatment options for chronic (慢性) pain have been limited, expensive, or inaccessible. Decades of neuroscience show that attention, expectation, and perception play a decisive role in how pain is experienced. This insight has led researchers to unlikely testing grounds: virtual reality (VR) and imagining relief.
One of the earliest scientists to explore VR’s potential for pain relief is Hunter Hoffman, a psychologist at the University of Washington. He developed an immersive environment called “Snow World” to help children undergoing burn wound care. In the virtual landscape, patients threw snowballs while listening to music. The program has been shown in many clinical studies to reduce both pain and anxiety during burn wound care.
“The driving factor is distraction.” says Zina Trost, a VR pain researcher. “The visual system is so primary in people. And if pain does not have your attention, you are not in pain. This kind of immersive distraction works especially well for short-term pain.
Virtual reality isn’t the only way to tap into the brain’s pain-processing systems. Jian Kang, a researcher at Harvard University, is exploring whether watching a video can ease chronic pain. In a November 2025 study, Kang invited individuals with chronic lower back pain to participate and asked them to watch short videos. In one version, a person underwent acupuncture (针灸). In another video, it showed a simple touch with cotton sticks on a lower back. In both cases, participants were asked to imagine experiencing the same bodily experience
What surprised the researchers was that both videos helped. The effect was stronger in the video acupuncture group — an average of 1.7 points lower in perceived pain — but the cotton-stick videos also produced meaningful relief. This is comparable to some results for real acupuncture. Neuroscience has found that sensory imagery and real bodily experience often engage the identical brain regions — a finding that could explain how the video produces its effect.
VR and video-based approaches are still being studied and their reach remains restricted by awareness and access. But their relatively low cost and ease of use could make them easier to scale. These two approaches are bringing fresh drive to the field.
12. What inspired researchers to test VR and imagining relief?
A. The low effectiveness of pain medicine. B. Findings on pain-related mental factors.
C. Patients’ demand for cheaper pain care. D. Lack of progress in pain research methods.
13. How does VR help with pain relief according to Zina Trost?
A. It reduces long-term pain via music. B. It blocks pain signals in the brain.
C. It boosts visual system’s sensitivity. D. It shifts people’s attention from pain.
14. Why can watching videos relieve pain?
A. The videos lower patients’ pain expectations.
B. Both videos distract patients with pleasant stories.
C. Real acupuncture effects are transferred through screens.
D. Imagined and real experiences involve the same brain areas.
15. What does the author think about the two approaches?
A. Limited but promising. B. Costly but reliable. C. Novel but unsustainable. D. Useful but inflexible.

I’m 36, a single dad to my 12-year-old son Nick. It’s just been us since his mom died three years ago. Our ninth-floor apartment is small and loud with pipes. The elevator groans, and the hallway always smells like burnt toast. Next door lives Mrs. Lawrence, a retired English teacher and a wheelchair user in her seventies. For Nick, she became “Grandma L” long before he said it out loud. She bakes him pies before big tests and makes him rewrite an entire essay over “their” and “they’re”.
That Tuesday started normally. Then the fire alarm went off. At first, I waited for it to stop. We got false alarms weekly. But this time it turned into one long, angry scream. Then I smelled it — real smoke, bitter and thick.
“Jacket. Shoes. Now,” I said. Nick froze for a second, then dashed for the door. I grabbed my keys and phone. Gray smoke curled along the ceiling. “The elevator?” Nick asked. “Stairs,” I said. “Stay in front of me. Hand on the rail. Don’t stop.” The stairwell was full of people — bare feet, pajamas and crying kids.
Nine flights doesn’t sound like much until you’re doing it with smoke drifting down behind you and your kid in front of you. By the seventh floor, my throat burned. By the fifth, my legs ached. By the third, my heart was pounding louder than the alarm. Eventually, we burst into the lobby (门厅) and then out into the cold night. People gathered in small groups, some wrapped in blankets, some barefoot. I pulled Nick aside and knelt in front of him. I looked around for the friendly face of Mrs. Lawrence and couldn’t find it.
“I need to get Mrs. Lawrence. The elevators are dead. She has no way out.” My son’s eyes filled. “You can’t go back there. Dad, it’s a fire.” “I know. But I can’t leave Mrs. Lawrence behind,” I replied.

“I realized that to make a wetland reserve, it needed plenty of water,” Andrew says.
【答案】4 D 5. B 6. A 7. C

For decades, treatment options for chronic (慢性) pain have been limited, expensive, or inaccessible.
A Limited but promising. B. Costly but reliable. C. Novel but unsustainable. D. Useful but inflexible.
B 13. D 14. D 15. A

When the weather is calling for winter storms, drivers know to prepare for roads with snow. But there is an invisible danger that can appear even when skies are clear — black ice. Black ice creates a dangerously slippery surface. ___16___
Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice on a dark asphalt (沥青) surface, which gives the phenomenon its descriptive name. Most black ice is created by freeze — thaw conditions when temperatures are around the freezing point. .___17___ Freezing rain can also produce black ice, as the air is warm enough for rain, but it falls on ground that is still frozen.
___18___ While black ice is more familiar in colder regions it can occur anywhere temperatures drop below freezing overnight. Bridges and overpasses are likely to experience black ice buildup because cold air flows beneath them, lowering the temperature of the road surface to cause freezing ___19___ Black ice regularly forms on sidewalks, steps and other areas where those on foot face an increased danger of slipping.
To spot black ice, look for areas that appear a bit shinier or wetter than the surrounding pavement. However, don’t count on being able to spot every area of black ice. The best way to stay safe when driving in this winter weather is to slow down leave plenty of space between cars, and avoid distractions while driving. ___20___ Remember that black ice usually appears in small areas, so if you stay composed and keep your wheels straight, you will likely regain control within a few seconds.
A. Where is black ice most common?
B. What makes black ice so dangerous?
C. This explains why black ice is common after nightfall.
D. Even turning a corner can cause an uncontrollable slide.

故填with。
故填it。
故填a。
故填where。

Dear Alan,
How’s everything going? I’m writing to share my experience of the traditional handcraft DIY activity held in our school recently.
I made a paper-cutting work themed on Chinese dragons. It took me two hours to finish it — first I drew the pattern carefully, then cut it with scissors skillfully. Finally, I colored it red, which symbolizes good luck in Chinese culture.
This activity benefited me a lot. Not only did I master basic paper-cutting skills, but also I felt the charm of traditional Chinese culture deeply. It’s amazing how ancient handcrafts carry our ancestors’ wisdom.
Yours,
Li Hua

Then I turned and rushed back into the building.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We finally made it outside of the building.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then I turned and rushed back into the building. The stairwell felt smaller, hotter, with smoke clinging to the ceiling. By the ninth floor, my lungs hurt and legs shook. Mrs. Lawrence was already in the hallway in her wheelchair. Seeing me, her shoulders sagged in relief. “Thank God,” she gasped. “I didn’t know how to get out.” “I’ll manage,” I replied. I locked her wheels, slid an arm under her knees and another behind her back, and lifted. Her fingers clutched my shirt. Each step was demanding. My arms burned, my back screamed and sweat stung my eyes.
We finally made it outside of the building. After easing Mrs. Lawrence into a chair, I checked on her. Nick broke from the crowd and rushed over. Mrs. Lawrence cupped his cheek. “Your father,” she said, her voice raspy but clear, “runs toward what others flee. Remember that.” Wrapped in a silver emergency blanket, we three huddled together. Fire truck lights flashed in the distance, but the cold no longer bit. The frantic fear of the past hour receded. We had left everything behind in the burning building, yet there, shivering on the pavement, we felt completely whole.
