Fang Li, a 70-year-old director and producer, hit the headline with The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru.
Late in September 1942, the Japanese military transported over 1, 800 British prisoners of war (POW) from Hong Kong to Japan by ship. In the waters off Dongji Island, it was torpedoed (被鱼雷击中) by a US submarine. Fishermen from Zhoushan risked their lives to save 384 POW. Fang was shocked. “How had we in China never heard of the Lisbon Maru? We know of the Titanic, but no one here ever mentioned the Lisbon Maru.”
This mystery aroused Fang’s curiosity, leading him to begin the search for the ship in 2016. During the journey, Fang learned of 94-year-old Lin Agen, the sole surviving fisherman to have participated in the rescue, and of a 98-year-old British soldier, Dennis Morley, who survived the tragedy. “It felt like a race against time. We had to document their stories before it was too late,” Fang says.
Fang launched a search for more survivors and their families. He placed ads in British newspapers like The Sunday Times and The Guardian. “People thought I was crazy — ‘Who even reads newspapers anymore?’ they said. But I knew that the elderly, like myself, still do,” Fang says. The campaign was a success, leading to BBC Radio 4 inviting him on a show, which in turn connected him with 380 POW families.
On Aug 23, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru was released on Dongji Island, where the tragedy occurred. Fang wrote on his WeChat moments: “We finally showed the documentary on Dongji Island, the very place where our ancestors performed their heroic acts 82 years ago. I also received the honorary title of ‘Dongji Island Citizen’ — a privilege I treasure deeply.”
4. What shocked Fang Li when he first heard about the Lisbon Maru story?
A. The great number of deaths. B. The cruelty of the war at sea.
C. The bravery of the fishermen. D. The silence about the history.
5. What did Fang Li mean by “a race against time” in paragraph 3?
A. The witnesses were old. B. The film had a deadline.
C. The ship was hard to find. D. The mystery remained unsolved.
6. Why did Fang Li choose to place ads in newspapers?
A. To attract the BBC. B. To save some money.
C. To reach older readers. D. To avoid new technology.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Dongji Island: a Land of Heroes B. Lisbon Maru: a Sunken Tragedy
C. Fang Li: an Honored History Recorder D. Fang Li: a Determined Citizen Journalist
C
With record numbers of people moving globally, understanding how to support reading skill development in a second language is vital. Currently, the foundation of scientific understanding of the reading process is narrow because most studies focus only on English. An interesting question arises: do immigrants transfer strategies from reading text in their native languages to additional languages?
This is exactly what the Multilingual Eye-Movement Corpus (MECO) (多语言眼动语料库) aims to answer. MECO collects data using a special camera setup to record eye movements during reading. It shows precisely where the eyes focus, reread, or skip words, showing how the brain processes text in real time. To allow for comparison, participants in the study read the same texts in English and were also tested using translated versions in their native languages.
A key finding has been that the habits acquired from reading in a first language leave traces on the second language. For example, writing systems like Korean pack much information into smaller units. As a result, Korean readers tend to skip many words and make shorter, more frequent eye movements. In contrast, in languages like Finnish where words are longer, readers tend to spend more time on specific words and do not skip them often.
MECO also reported a noticeable difference between understanding and eye-movement behavior. In their second language, readers often achieved similar understanding scores to native English speakers, but their eye movements showed that the process was much more effortful. This could be because, in educational or workplace settings, the benefits of fully understanding materials outweigh the benefits of reading speed.
Linguist (语言学家) Yaqian Borogjoon Bao stated that such research was likely to help researchers, educators, and policymakers design better strategies for language teaching. She also suggested that MECO inspire others to explore understudied languages, aiming to fill the existing gaps in our knowledge.
8. What is the main goal of the MECO project?
A. To create better eye-tracking technology. B. To explain why English is widely studied.
C. To compare reading in different languages. D. To test if first-language skills affect another.
9. Why did the researchers use translated texts?
A. To make the reading process easier. B. To test participants’ translation skills.
C. To ensure better understanding scores. D. To allow comparison across languages.
10. What can be inferred from the MECO study?
A. Native speakers always read faster and understand more.
B. Immigrants may gain good understanding with hard work.
C. First-language reading habits vary from person to person.
D. The writing system is the factor that decides reading speed.
11. What is the significance of MECO’s research?
A. It leads to sound immigration policies.
B. It fills the gaps in unstudied knowledge.
C. It promotes more effective language teaching methods.
D. It suggests using eye-tracking technology in classrooms.
D
Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that leads to cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA. Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on forever throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.
Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.
When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer.
The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.
12. How do plants stay genetically healthy?
A. By removing the parts that carry genetic errors.
B. By stopping the growth of all newly formed tissues.
C. By fixing the cells that have received some damage.
D. By protecting the roots from the outside dangers.
13. What does the word “propagation” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Spread. B. Repair. C. Change. D. Attack.
14. Why is the animal safeguard mechanism mentioned in the text?
A. To find a better way to treat the human cancer.
B. To prove a theory that was published years ago.
C. To explain the common protective system in two groups.
D. To show the differences between plants and animal cells.
15. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Plant study’s value to agriculture. B. Scientists’ plans for future research.
C. How to respond to climate change? D. How to develop stress-tolerant plants?

A Midnight Rescue
It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.
The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork (岔路) in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits (坑) set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of bright red blood on the fallen leaves.
David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, “Could Unicorn be hurt that badly?” Harry answered, “If we can’t find it as soon as possible, it doesn’t stand much chance to survive.” Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient (顺从的) and not afraid of human beings. “Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison. “ Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit (急救箱) on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.
It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. “We must hurry up”, said Harry.

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. C

D By protecting the roots from the outside dangers.

【答案】
Getting to Know the Intangible Cultural Heritage Around Us
Last weekend, our school held a special workshop called “Exploring Our Intangible Cultural Heritage.” We invited a well-known local paper-cutting artist to teach us about this beautiful craft.
First, we watched as he turned simple red paper into lovely shapes using only scissors. Then, with his help, we all tried making our own paper art. It was not easy, but everyone enjoyed the hands-on practice.
Through this experience, we learned to appreciate the art more and felt more connected to our own culture. We realized that to keep traditions alive, we must try them ourselves and understand their value.

A Midnight Rescue
It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight.

【答案】范文
However, it was really not easy for them to find it. Thick fog came, covering almost everything. They had to bend down to search for clues like blood splashes or footprints, which made them walk more slowly, ears sharper than usual. Suddenly, painful roars came to the rescuers and in front of them lay the young elephant. “Look! Unicorn! “Harry rushed forward, cried excitedly, and gently touched the trembling creature. His heart dropped a beat at the sight of the exhausted elephant, with a wound on its left front leg bleeding badly.
Without delay, Harry knelt down to do first aid on its wound. Fortunately, everything needed was available in the first aid kit. Calmly and skillfully, Harry conducted an operation on Unicorn immediately, and it seemed more obedient than before. Therefore, it didn’t take much time for Harry to stop the bleeding as an experienced rescuer. And after a while, Unicorn was able to stand up and walked away. It was rescued! Waving goodbye to it, Harry and David felt a heavy burden lifted. At this moment, the whole forest woke up, the moonlight fading while winds singing welcome to the dawn.
