B During the Spring Festival, you always see red paper cuttings with lucky patterns (图案) pasted on windows or doors—those great artworks are more than just decorations. Chinese paper cutting is an art of cutting out pictures from paper with the help of a pair of scissors or a knife. In 2009, the Chinese paper cutting was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录). Paper cutting originated (起源) in China, which has been around for over 1,500 years. But long before that, when paper wasn’t invented, Chinese people already used similar skills to make cutouts on leaves, leather and silk. It reached the top during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). From the common people to royal families (王室), paper cuttings could be seen everywhere. In our daily life, the subjects of the paper cuttings can be anything, from historical events and fairy tale characters to plants and animals. The paper cuttings are so vivid that they look like real ones. In celebration of the Spring Festival, people usually make cutouts of the Chinese character “Fu” and put them on windows, walls and doors for good luck. Chinese character “Xi” is cut for the wedding ceremony. Paper cutting may sound easy, but actually it’s much more difficult to do well. “You can’t forget aesthetics (美学) when making Chinese paper cuttings. This art was invented for decoration from the very beginning,” said Fang Jianguo, who has made paper cuttings for over 30 years. “Before doing it, you have to learn how to draw well. Without good drawing skills, you can’t make good paper cuttings.” Paper cutting tradition also has new development. Li Baofeng is a 54-year-old folk artist. “Traditional paper cuttings are often made with red paper, which seems to be a little boring. So I want to make something new,” says Li. “Scissors are still scissors. Techniques are improved based on traditional techniques.” She has made works in different colors which have amazing 3D effects (效果). Now more and more people love paper cutting works. 32. Why does the writer mention red paper cuttings in Paragraph 1? A. To catch readers’ interest. B. To show paper cutting tools. C To tell the symbol of paper cutting. 33. Which of the following are mentioned in Paragraph 2? ① The history of paper cutting art. ② The time when paper was invented. ③ The reason why people like paper cutting. ④ The materials that people used for cutting. A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ 34. What does the underlined word “vivid” mean? A. Lively. B. Lovely. C. Valuable. 35. What can we infer (推断) from Fang Jianguo’s words? A. Most artists can’t make good paper cuttings. B. A good painter must be a good paper cutting maker. C. Fang is good at both drawing and making paper cuttings. 36. What does Li Baofeng do to develop paper cutting? A. She uses new tools instead of scissors. B. She makes paper cuttings more colorful. C. She uses 3D printing to make paper cuttings. C Many westerners find it interesting that Chinese people always carry a vacuum cup (保温杯). If you go to a western restaurant, they usually serve you a cup of cold water with ice. And when you ask if they can change to hot water, you may receive a strange look from the waiter or people nearby. Hot water? Seriously? So hot water VS cold water, which one is better? By the 1930s, water supplies (供水) in China were often polluted because of poor conditions. In order to prevent people from diseases, the government suggested drinking boiled water, because they considered it a way to kill off bacteria (细菌). People at that time always boiled water and stored it in a vacuum bottle to keep it warm for the day. Even now you can find hot water everywhere, in schools, factories, and offices across the country. While for western countries, many people died of the plague (鼠疫). They took water quality (质量) seriously from then on, so that people can drink water directly rather than boil it. You may also discover that Chinese people prefer hot meals. Some parents always teach their children to drink hot soup with meals, because they think mixing cold water with hot meals is really bad for the stomach, and cold water may cause digestive (消化) problems. According to the eating habits in western countries, they prefer “raw” food, so they also prefer their water “raw”. They also like hamburgers and fried food, which are all with high calorie (高热量), so they need cold drinks to cool them off. Drinking hot or cold water also has something to do with medicine beliefs. In traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese people consider drinking hot water increases blood circulation (循环) and washes away the coldness in one’s body, and thus eases (减轻) pain. However, most westerners believe that drinking hot water may weaken your body. Drinking hot water too often will make your body unable to stand water below your body temperature. You may find out that there is no answer to this question. So don’t feel strange next time you see a Chinese ask for hot water, just show your respect. 37. How do westerners feel when you ask the waiter to serve a cup of hot water? A. Common. B. Shocked. C. Glad. 38. What causes of Chinese drinking hot water are mentioned in this passage? ①History ②Medical beliefs ③Body structure ④Eating habits ⑤Water system A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ②④⑤ 39. According to traditional Chinese medicine, what can drinking hot water do? A. Help heat off the body after eating fried food. B. Improve blood circulation and reduce pain. C. Kill harmful bacteria in the water directly. 40. What can we know from the passage? A. Westerners need to boil water before drinking. B. Chinese cannot eat dinner without hot soup. C. Both westerners and Chinese think water quality is important. 41. Which of the following is the best title (标题) for this passage? A. Is hot water good for health? B. Why do Chinese like hot water? C. Hot water or cold water? D 13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts (手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. C. To tell the symbol of paper cutting. 【答案】32. A 33. C. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community. Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad. One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea. “Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money!” With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up. Later, people began to stop by. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly (环保的) crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders. He was deeply moved and decided to write a song at once for New China with his love and pride. He had many ideas but none was good enough for him. One day in September 1950, on the way to Beijing Railway Station, Wang Xin walked past Tian’anmen Square. The moment he saw the Five-Starred Red Flag flying in the wind, a few words for the song came into his mind. On the train back to Tianjin, when he saw the fields and mountains outside the window, the main part of the song began to take shape, “Over the mountains, across the plains (平原)…” When Wang Xin arrived home, he said with excitement, “I made it! I made it!” He completed the whole song right away. The next morning, he went to a local newspaper, and hoped to get the song published. But it wasn’t accepted. However, Wang Xin didn’t give up. He led a music group to perform the song in different places. The song really brought people power, pride and more love for the country.
