Here are four impressive examples of nature reclaiming (利用) our world for itself with amazing results. Houtouwan, China It lies on the island of Shengshan Town on the furthermost edge of a group of islands. The only way to get there is by private boat, or by bus, and then by ship. Its isolation (隔绝) was one of the prime factors leading to the abandonment of the village in the 1990s. Now, its walls and streets become green with overgrowth. Spreepark, Germany Spreepark was closed in 2001 and the local plant life soon got to work. Structures in use since the park originally opened in 1969 were quickly covered by leaves. Now, an initiative aims to bring the site back to life. Vallone dei Mulini, Italy Its high humidity (湿度) encouraged a microclimate perfect for plant growth. As the abandoned buildings fell apart, the ruins and their surroundings became completely overgrown. Photographs taken of the site in 2006 went widespread online. Beng Mealea, Cambodia Though constructed around 900 years ago, this grand temple is far less frequented than its more famous neighbour, Angkor Wat. In 2020, it was submitted for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Natural decline, among other factors, has caused serious damage to the site, allowing the surrounding jungle to overrun and combine with it. 21.What mainly caused Houtouwan's abandonment? A.Its wet climate. B.The overgrowth of plants. C.Its separate location. D.The aging of walls and streets. 根据Houtouwan,China部分中的“The only way to get there...leading to the abandonment of the village in the 1990s.” 22.Which place once became popular online? He says that he tried to take his own life nine years ago after hitting__rock__bottom. “In the beginning, I was so paranoid (多疑的) and angry that I couldn't leave the house,” says Doogue.“When I attempted to end my life, I knew I needed to see someone. I went to the doctors and got treatment, but I knew that I needed something more and that's when I started photography.” Now a dad of two, Doogue found that looking at insects through a camera helped him in ways he could never have imagined and it proved to be the lifeline he needed. It had a calming effect that helped him to disconnect from stress. And his astonishing images, showing insects and spiders in amazing detail against brightly colored backgrounds, caught the eye of publishers at National Geographic. “I ended up as one of their featured photographers,” recalled Doogue.“It was the peak of my career. It was incredible.” Originally from Salford, Greater Manchester, he now lives in Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. Though he fears that Scotland is in the middle of an epidemic of male suicide, he believes that sharing his love of nature photography can help others to cope with their mental health issues as well.“I think the problem is this manup approach;the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time,” says Doogue.“This is why I try and am so open about my own experience. Whenever I am out with my camera, I don't think about my other worries. It is just me and the environment around me.You can lose yourself in a spider making its web.” 24.What does the underlined phrase “hitting rock bottom” in paragraph 1 mean? C.It provided him with lifesaving skills. D.It offered him an opportunity to explore nature. 根据第二段中的“It had a calming effect that helped him to disconnect from stress.” 26.What caused Scottish men to develop mental health problems? A.The way men employ to solve problems. B.The lack of love for men's life and work. C.The worry that men get separated from people. D.The belief that men are expected to be strong. 根据第三段中的“the idea that men need to be strong puts so much pressure on young males to be fine all the time”可推断,男人被要求保持坚强,这种观念给苏格兰的年轻男性带来很大压力,导致他们患有心理疾病。 27.What is the main purpose of the author in writing the passage? A.To warn the severity of mental problems. B.To show the benefits of nature photography. C.To advise readers to get close to nature. D.To introduce Doogue's fighting against depression. When necessary, colonies (群) of these insects turn themselves into ladders, chains and walls. And when floodwater rises, a colony can float to safety by making an unusual boat. The ants hold tightly to each other, forming a floating disk atop the water. The ant raft may float for months seeking safe harbor. The ants on the bottom don't drown, and the ants on the top stay dry. Working together, the ants float to safety—even though a single ant alone in the water will struggle to survive. “They have to stay together as a colony to survive,” Nathan Mlot said. Fire ants and water don't mix. The ant's hard outer shell naturally repels (推开) water. A drop of water can sit on top of the ant like a backpack. When an ant does end up underwater, tiny hairs on its body can trap bubbles of air that give the bug a boost up. To investigate the science behind the ant raft, scientists placed hundreds or thousands of ants at a time in the water. A group of ants took about 100 seconds, on average, to build a raft. The researchers repeated the experiment multiple times. Each time, the ants organized themselves the same way, creating a raft about the size and the thickness of a thin pancake. The rafts were flexible and strong, staying together even when the researchers pushed the rafts underwater. The scientists then froze the rafts in liquid nitrogen (氮) and studied them under powerful microscopes to figure out how the ants kept everyone safe and the water out. The team found that some ants used their jaws to bite other ants' legs. Other ants joined their legs together. Thanks to these tight bonds, said the scientists, the ants did a better job at keeping the water away than any ant could do on its own. By working together, thousands of ants could stay alive in the face of a crisis like a flood by using their own bodies to build a boat. 28.What do fire ants do when flood comes? A.They will run away separately. B.They combine themselves into a raft. C.They find a hole to hide themselves. D.They climb onto boats on the water. 根据第一段中的“And when floodwater rises...forming a floating disk atop the water.” 29.What can make fire ants stay afloat? A.Their powerful jaws. B.Their rather slippery skin. C.Tiny hairs on their body. D.Their backpack on the body top. 根据第二段中的“When an ant does end up underwater...give the bug a boost up.” 30.What can we learn from the paragraph 3? A.The ant crafts still work underwater. B.The ants organize themselves in different ways. C.The fire ants like looking for the food of pancakes. D.The researchers find fire ants' ability to construct limited. 根据第三段中的“The rafts were flexible...pushed the rafts underwater.” 31.What's the author's purpose of writing this passage? A.To introduce building ability of fire ants. B.To introduce how fire ants react in the face of fire. C.To introduce fire ants' ability to live underwater. D.To introduce fire ants' differences from common ants. 根据第一段中的“Fire ants are famous for their construction projects (as well as their burning bites).” D Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive (相互排斥的) career paths. But that wasn't always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings. “Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new sciencepoetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their scientific field. Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth's workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17syllablelong poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members' research projects.“It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing.“We do a disservice(伤害) to ourselves to think that scientists can't be artistic and that art can't be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says. That viewpoint is echoed (附和) by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their handsoff PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a twoway dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientistpoet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says. Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We're all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share. 32.What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in paragraph 1? A.To display they were talented. B.To confirm they were out of favor. C.To encourage different career paths. D.To show poetry and science can be combined. 根据第一段中的“The mathematician Ada Lovelace... a licensed surgeon.” 33.What are Illingworth's workshops aimed at doing? A.Promoting a new sciencepoetry journal. B.Encouraging science communication through poems. C.Inspiring outsiders to pursue their careers in science. D.Getting scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research. Environmental protection prevents natural disasters. Nature struggles for balance. This is why forests absorb carbon dioxide, grow and change it into oxygen. This provides an opportunity for life and also slows down climate change. The destruction of forests greatly changes the climate of entire regions, or even causes powerful floods. 36.________ Environmental protection stimulates research and technological innovation. 37.________ Almost every animal and plant has its own technical secrets. People spy on (秘密监视) them and copy them. With the disappearance of ecosystems and wildlife species, the base for scientific research and technical improvement will be nowhere to find. Protecting the environment is protecting people. The loss of natural resources leads to economic crisis, war or disease. 38.________ For example, the reduction of the population of bees will affect not only the production of honey, but also the whole food production system. No bees—no honey, no fruit, very few vegetables. This leads to hunger, disease, migration and war. 39.________ We meet with likeminded people. Any local success—the rescue of an endangered population for reserves—becomes a cause for global joy and inspires more participation. We humans are part of nature and its cycles. Our impact on ecosystems has noticeable influence on our daily life. But it can be predicted and avoided if we think with our head and act carefully. 40.________ Even small deeds can improve the state of nature and our life on Earth. A.We are strongly dependent on it. B.Respect for ecosystems helps to avoid such troubles. C.And positive change can be promoted in the same way. D.Taking part in environmental protection is a source of joy. As long as we carefully observe and study the nature, we will get inspiration from it. As the picture shows, there are two birds, one sleeping while the other with a worm in its mouth. This presents a wellknown Chinese idiom: The early bird catches the worm. The idiom reminds us of the importance of diligence. It is also a metaphor that preparation plays an important role on the road to success. Opportunities are always for those prepared minds, and only when we are wellprepared can we make achievements, attaining our goals. Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters.More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach.Worse still, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore. They were upset and decided that something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend, Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up.Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags.To their disappointment, after a day's hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water.Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure. That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently.Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It's those annoying plastic bags.We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair's disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted, “Well, it's really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us...”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that's the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus. Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning._____________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on social media.______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ One possible version: Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning. Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet.“Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's awareness.” Maria proposed.“Good idea! We can also make a video!” Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea.Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the cleanup. Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on social media. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately.Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their cleanup.More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags.A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their longawaited pleasure.
