Step 1 Lead-in
1. Start the class by introducing the topic of the day: volunteer work at a nursing home. Ask students:“What do you know about nursing homes?Have you ever visited a nursing home?”
2. Encourage students to give more answers and write down their ideas on the blackboard.
Step 2 Work on 3a
1. Ask students to read the conversation between Ella and Teng Fei silently. Then answer the questions:“Where does Teng Fei volunteer? Who does he help?”
2. Check the answers: At a nursing home; He helps the elderly.
3. Teach the following words and expressions by giving examples.Youth, active.
Step 3 Work on 3b
1. Ask students to read the conversation again and complete the table about Teng Fei's work and thoughts.
2. Check the answers: Teng Fei’ s work: stay active; playing Chinese chess; use a mobile phone. Teng Fei's and Ella's thoughts: very lonely;visit them; care for; be old; interesting life stories and experiences.
3. Lead students to read the completed table aloud and discuss TengFei's volunteer experiences and thoughts.

1. Listen to the conversation. Then ask students to work in pairs to act out the conversation. Encourage them to use more phrases and sentences they have learnt.
2. Walk around the classroom to monitor and provide help if needed.
3. Invite some pairs to present their conversations in front of the class.
Step 5 Work on 3d
1. Ask students to imagine they are volunteers and discuss their⋯volunteer work with their partners, using the questions in 3d.
2. Encourage students to share their volunteer work experiences and feelings.
3. Invite some students to share their discussions with the class.
