第二部分第二节
The Surprising Strength of“Weak”Social Ties
It's long been known that a community of supportive relationships improves our quality of life and
can even help us recover from illness.36.Regularly interacting with a wide variety of social ties,
both "weak"and"strong",enhances our satisfaction.A rich diversity of ties provides more significant
benefits to well-being,and "weak"social ties can prove just as important to life satisfaction as core,or
"strong"ties.37.There you can find the people who cheer, serve, support, comfort, educate, motivate,
and entertain you…
When in fifth grade,I had a big dream:I wanted to win the school's Science Fair. The prize was a
shiny gold medal, and every year, students from all the grades would gather in the gym to see who the
winners were.I didn't think too much about how to make it happen-I just wanted to win...
One of the judges asked softly,"Can you explain how your rocket works?"
When the awards were announced,my name wasn't called.

Well, we're a sort of social club for people from different countries, and it's quite a new club when we have about fifty members at the moment, but we're growing . all the time. That sounds interesting. I'm british actually, and I came to washington about three months ago. I'm looking for ways to meet people. Ah what kinds of events do you organize? Well, we have social get togethers and sports events, and we also have language evenings. Could you tell me something about the language evenings? Fashion magazines usually mean grand photoshoots showing models with colorful,
eye-catching clothing in unique patterns. But imagine a fashion magazine without a single
picture in it.British Vogue, the UK's well-known fashion magazine is making history by
doing just that, making copies of the magazine available in pictureless Braille()and
audio formats for blind and low vision folks.
Selma Blair is best known for her acting career, but she's also known as a disability
advocate.British Vogue interviewed Blair about her struggles with multiple sclerosis(
in its May 2023 edition and the actress was also featured on the magazine's cover.
That wasn't an accident, but rather a sign of the fashion magazine's commitment to disability
inclusion.
Edward Enninful,the former editor-in-chief of the well-known magazine,announced
the new format in an Instagram post that has since gotten more than 40,000 likes."For
the first time in the magazine's history,"Enninful's post reads,"I am pleased to share
that the magazine is now available in Braille, for blind and partially sighted people. The
Vogue team and I are delighted by the response to the May issue, but what the process of
making it taught us is that what are most important are clear and lasting changes.
Vogue's move towards greater accessibility mirrored Eninnful's experiences and his
values."I'm partially blind and my hearing is less than 50 percent. It's never stopped me,
but there are so many people with invisible disabilities who never talk about it,because it
might block them.We always talk about diversity and inclusivity, but that also has to extend to
our disabled brothers and sisters,"he said.
The move has been warmly praised by people with disabilities and disability advocates.
Natalie Trevonne,a blend fashion designer and accessibility consultant, says that the new
formats are a good start, but there's still a lot more to do.She shares,"I just hope they
will go beyond that and start including more blind and low vision folks in front of the camera
and in more fashion brand campaigns."

Hollywood may have warned about the risks of striking up relationships with
artificial intelligence, but one computer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we do
not accept the positives that human-machine relationships have to offer.
Tony Prescott, professor of cognitive robotics at the University of Sheffield, argues
that AI has an important role to play in preventing human loneliness.Just as we develop
meaningful bonds with pets, and have no reservations about children playing with dolls,
so should we be open to the value of AI to adults,he says.
“Human loneliness is often characterised by a downward spiral(螺旋线)in which
isolation leads to lower self-esteem(),which discourages further interaction with
people,"Prescott writes in a new book,The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence.
"There may be ways in which AI companionship could help break this cycle by boosting
feelings of self-worth and helping maintain or improve social skills. If so,relationships
with AI could support people to find companionship with human and artificial others.
With more than a third of Americans reporting "serious loneliness",the loneliness
problem has become evident in recent years.Whether AI can,or should,be part of the
solution is not a new debate.Sherry Turkle, professor of social science at MIT,has
warned that forming relationships with machines could backfire, and lead people to have
fewer secure and fulfilling human relationships.
Murali Doraiswamy, professor of medicine at Duke University, said:"Right now,all
the evidence points to having a close human friend as the best solution for loneliness. But
until society prioritizes social connectedness, robots are a solution for the millions of people
who have no friends.”
Researchers may soon know whether people turn to AI for company.Tech firms are
building chatbots to be ever more fluent and responsive to emotions. This week,it emerged
that OpenAI asked Scarlett Johansson to be the voice of their latest chatbot,GPT-40,to "help
consumers to feel comfortable".Johansson refused, but the chatbot was released with a voice
that friends and family thought was hers.OpenAI has since suspended (the voice option
“out of respect for Ms Johansson”.
28.What do the pets and dolls mentioned in Paragraph 2 help illustrate?
A.The limitations of human-AI relationships in daily life.
B.The potential for AI to provide similar companionship.
C.The possibility for AI to replace traditional companions.
D.The overestimation of AI's role in ending human loneliness.
29.What do the underlined words "this cycle"in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The repeated use of AI and others for companionship.
B.The consistent failure of human relationships with Al.
C.The process of developing human self-worth and social skills
D.The pattern of isolation, lower self-esteem and further isolation.

Across the flat plateau of AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades of gray-brown soil are dotted
with areas of dark rock-and a clearly defined circle of stones.Unmistakably constructed by
humans,this structure,called "standing stone circles"by Archaeologists,was built around
7500 years ago by a people we barely know for a purpose we have long misunderstood.
In 2019,archaeologists from the University of Western Australia began excavating
(these standing stone circles.Their initial idea was that these were structures built
by Neolithic nomads(新石器时代的游牧民)for some long-forgotten religious practices..
However, excavating at multiple sites, they found what turned out to be archaeological
pay dirt-domestic rubbish.The remains of discarded animal bones,household tools,and
even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes.
Standing stone circles seem to have sprung up around 5800 to 5500 B.C.This coincided
with a warmer climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of
rich grasses and trees, good conditions for raising cattle and goats. But these were also
good conditions for building permanent structures.More abundant vegetation meant less
pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes
more worthwhile. This, and the plateau's abundance of stones, may have encouraged the
nomads to stay a while and build.
Excavations of these settlements are revealing something of this people's way of life.
They kept cattle and goats for meat, but continued to hunt and gather to expand their diet
with animals, fruits and nuts. The many grinding()stones found on the sites suggest
inhabitants were regularly grinding grains, but these were likely to be gathered rather
than farmed. The plateau sites have also revealed tools made with materials from the
sandstone valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red Sea-these Neolithic
people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange.
The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla.Here were
a people more settled and more civilized than history has given them credit for.Their story
is just beginning to be revealed, but already a very different picture of early AlUla is emerging.
32.What did the 2019 excavation finally identify the "standing stone circles"as?
A.Religious sites.
B.Natural wonders.
C.Rubbish stations.
D.Domestic buildings
33.What was a contributing factor in the building of the standing stone circles?
A.The richness of plants.
B.The worsening climate.
C.The need to store goods.
D.The desire to raise more animals.
34.What is most likely true about Neolithic people's way of life in AlUla?
A.They had interactions with other groups.
B.They planted crops and kept cattle and goats.
C.They relied entirely on hunting and gathering for food.
D.They made tools and jewelry purely from local materials
35.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To promote a historical site.
B.To provide some new insights.
C.To introduce an ancient population.
D.To argue for some long-held beliefs

The Surprising Strength of“Weak”Social Ties
It's long been known that a community of supportive relationships improves our qual-
ity of life and can even help us recover from illness.36.Regularly interacting with a
wide variety of social ties, both“weak”and“strong”,enhances our satisfaction.A rich
diversity of ties provides more significant benefits to well-being,and "weak"social ties
can prove just as important to life satisfaction as core,or "strong"ties.37.There
you can find the people who cheer, serve, support, comfort, educate, motivate, and
entertain you.
Claire gets cheered up by going to the library and chatting with her favorite librarian
every week.Sherry gets great joy from her Sunday breakfasts at a local diner because the
manager and her favorite waitress are nice to her.38.I remember discussing Anna
Karenina on an airplane with a wise economics professor, and finding meaningful
moments of joy with street musicians and performers.
39.When you show kindness to a stranger, your seemingly small act might stay
in their memory as a source of support and positivity.Everyone needs to feel significant in
the eyes of another. You could be that person for someone in your extended circle. That's
why it's so important to reach out to people around you, especially when they're going
through hard times.
When we feel blue or lonely,we tend to turn down social engagements, either to avoid
the imagined embarrassment of being the only sad person in a group or because socializing with
people we don't know well can be awkward at first.40.Being open to both our strong
and weak ties allows us to benefit from the comfort, connection, and community they
provide.
A.All of those connections matter-and so do you
B.Harvard researcher Hanne Collins discovered something new
C.Even those we meet only once can leave a lasting impression
D.Our shared kindness and familiarity offer me a sense of community
E.Interacting with the weak ties encourages us to behave more professionally
F.But saying yes, despite the hesitation, offers an opportunity to feel less lonely
G.So notice, pay attention to,and be grateful for your big, wide world of loose
social ties

When in fifth grade,I had a big dream:I wanted to win the school's Science Fair.
The prize was a shiny gold medal, and every year, students from all the grades would
gather in the gym to see who the winners were.I didn't think too much about how to
make it happen-I just wanted to win.
However,there was a problem.I didn't really have an idea for my project.I wasn't
sure what would be impressive enough to win,so I came up with a quick solution:I'd
build a rocket.Rockets seemed cool, and I assumed if I made one that looked awesome,
that should be enough.
So,I went to the store with my mom and grabbed a bunch of supplies:cardboard
tubes,glue,markers,and glitter(闪光装饰物).My plan was simple-一make the rocket
look amazing, and everyone would be impressed.I didn't bother learning how rockets
worked, and I didn't think about running tests.I figured if it looked good, which would
be all I needed to win.
For the next few days,I worked hard on making my rocket shine.I glued the cardboard
together, added fins()to the sides, and covered the whole thing in glitter. It shined under
the light, and I thought to myself,"This has to be enough. But at the back of my mind,
I knew, the Science Fair was supposed to be about learning and showing something scientific.
Still,I ignored that feeling.
As the Science Fair approached,I spent all my time on my rocket's look.I didn't do
any research,didn't learn about thrust(or fuel,and definitely didn't test anything.I
convinced myself that would be enough.
The big day finally arrived.I walked into the gym, proudly carrying my glitter-covered
rocket.I set it up on the display table and watched as the judges made their way around
the room. When they stopped at my project,my heart raced. This was my moment.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One of the judges asked softly,"Can you explain how your rocket works?"
When the awards were announced,my name wasn't called.
