The 22-Month Journey of Discovery
Adapted from Reader's Digest 202308
Neal Moore is New York State's Mohawk River by canoe①, approaching the end of a journey: began 22 months ago and covered 7,456 miles. His paddle② has plied (定期来往) 21 bodies of water across the continent③. His mission was in search of what people together.
When his 50th birthday was only a few years off, he decided to make good use of his time—he'd traverse④ the continent by canoe to rediscover America, and to see what still held it together.
The open canoe would not only the continent's first inhabitants⑤, but it would put as little as possible between him and the world. His plan was to travel from west to east, Pacific to Atlantic. The trip would need a at the end, and he knew just the thing—a victory lap⑥ around the Statue of Liberty(自由女神像), symbol of the American people, who were what this trip was about.
On February 9, 2020, Moore sets out⑦ from Astoria, Oregon, at the mouth of the Columbia River. He packs a tent, a sleeping bag, jugs of water and freeze-dried meals, then points his bright red five-metre canoe upstream. He starts paddling—1,078 uphill miles to the Continental Divide in Montana—he portages(运输) over the Divide, then does an eight-month, 3,600-mile downhill run to New Orleans. The final leg⑧, 2,890 miles over several months, takes Moore east along the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, then up through Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky, and eventually to New York City.
Along the way, he dodges (躲开) barges (驳船) and container⑨ ships, grizzlies (灰熊), and gets bumped (碰,撞) hard by a bull shark and escorted (护送) by dolphins. He capsizes (翻船) twice and is hit by all kinds of conditions: heavy winds, sleet⑩, downpours⑪ and floods. But there is spectacular scenery. The beauty of a river lies in the balance between nature and civilization⑫, which appeals to Moore. He is as interested in people as he is in the land. For example, at river towns as old as the country itself, he's often swarmed (包围) by curious : Where did he come from? And he's going all the way to where?
The vast majority⑬ of people are happy to help, to share, to swap⑭ stories and to form intense—however brief—connections. Whatever you might see on the news, Moore learns that people are still generous and curious, brave and resilient⑮, still connected by neighbourly⑯ values.
On December 14, 2021, shortly after his 50th birthday, Moore makes his final approach along the Hudson River to New York City. Hard to believe it is coming to an end. Tears well up, and not from the wind.Crowding the harbour⑰ are boats filled with friends and journalists and gawkers marveling⑱ at the magnitude⑲ of his accomplishment⑳: 7,456 miles. Twenty-two rivers, 22 states, 22 months, just as he'd said he would do.
His mother, who had passed away㉑, would be proud—he had done something truly transformative㉒, something “pure”. Though it's all over now, he wishes he could just keep paddling.
