Our team went to a small town in Guatemala. We set up our tables and packages of pre-made glasses in the dirty courtyard of a clinic, put up the Snellen chart (an eye chart) on a wall, and began our work. Young and old people came from many of the surrounding towns. Most had never received an eye exam before. They waited for hours patiently in the sun, never complaining. If we could help them out, their thankfulness for a simple pair of glasses was overwhelming. Some only left with eye drops or sunglasses, and even these people expressed their gratitude sincerely. All of them were very generous with blessings and smiles. We heard over and over from people who knew their eyes needed help but they had not gone to a doctor because it was too expensive,or had not got the glasses they needed for the same reason. It's so easy to overlook how much difference the volunteers' small actions can make to the lives of people in Guatemala. The glasses in my country are so easily available, but to people in Guatemala, they are not. As those who could give them a hand,we watched their lives change. What a gift sight is—and what a difference being able to see clearly makes! Here, we'd like you to join us and take action to help people in need. And every day, those actions change lives. No action is too small; no action is ever wasted. 24.What do we know about the volunteers in the eyeglass team? Most people like smartphones or tablets because they seem to make everyday tasks easier, but after gathering 48 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 29 for the study, the researchers found that those who wrote on paper to finish note-taking tasks completed these about 25 percent faster than people who used smartphones or tablets. What is the reason? The team said that using paper gives the volunteers more of a chance to write in their own form, while digital paper is uniform (一致的), has no fixed position when people are scrolling, and disappears when the app is closed. The researchers divided the volunteers, including college students and office staff, into three groups depending on their memory, preferences for using paper or digital tools, sex and age.In the study, a total of 48 volunteers read a fictional conversation between characters discussing their plans for two months in the near future, including 14 different class times, the deadlines for homework and personal appointments.Volunteers then recorded the fictional schedule using paper, smartphones or tablets. There was no time limit and volunteers were asked to record the fictional events in the same way as they would for their real-life schedules, without spending extra time memorizing the schedule. After one hour, including a break and an interference task to distract them from thinking about the calendar, volunteers answered a range of simple (When is the deadline for homework?) and complex (Which is the earlier deadline for homework?) multiple choice questions to test their memory of the schedule. Those who used paper for note-taking spent only about 11 minutes jotting down their thoughts during the study, while people who used tablets spent 14 minutes and smartphone users spent about 16 minutes writing down their thoughts. As for the accuracy of the answers, those writing on paper seemed to stand out. This suggested that writing on paper benefits their memory. 28.Why did the volunteers writing on paper finish note-taking tasks faster? A.Their tasks were less difficult. B.They took notes without any stops. C.Their writing styles were consistent. D.They could write in their unique ways. 根据第二段中的“The team said that...when the app is closed.” 29.What were the volunteers required to do in the study? A.To make up some conversations. B.To raise questions for each other. C.To take notes about a schedule. D.To discuss notes with group members. 根据第三段中的“In the study...paper, smartphones or tablets.” 30.Why were the volunteers asked to answer questions after an hour? A.To test their memory. B.To ensure the accuracy. C.To keep them energetic. D.To influence their thoughts. 根据第三段中的“After one hour...their memory of the schedule.” 31.What does the underlined words “jotting down” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Leaving out. B.Taking down. C.Breaking down. D.Concentrating on. 根据最后一段中的“smartphone users spent about 16 minutes writing down their thoughts”可知,使用智能手机的人花了16分钟写下自己的想法。 D Honeybees can't swim, and when their wings are wet, they can't fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide toward land—like surfers who create and then ride their own waves. As with many scientific advances—Isaac Newton's apple or Benjamin Franklin's lightning bolt—Dr.Roh's experiment began with a walk.Passing Caltech's Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water's surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water. Dr.Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee's bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get trapped on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It's a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity. The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn't been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic insects use their legs for pushing power, which is known as water-walking.It may have developed in bees, they predicted. Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees' surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. “This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can't send a boat or helicopter,” Dr.Gharib said. 32.What does the author intend to show by mentioning Newton and Franklin? A.Roh's admiration for them. B.Their similar achievements in discovery. C.Their outstanding talent for science. D.Roh's chance discovery about bees. 33.What plays the most vital role in a bee's moving forward on water? A.The air weight. B.Its continuous wing beat. C.The water movement. D.Its leg extension. 根据第三段中的“But that weight...up and down.” 34.What's the author's attitude towards using this observation? A.Supportive. B.Uncaring. School was coming, and I was afraid of it.I was not an adventurous person.Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries.Would I make friends? Would I fit in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn't know. I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading.I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework.Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades.Teachers loved that about me.Other kids, though, did not.Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates.I was unpopular.I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me. Then one day, a tall boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team.I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said.“You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us.Do you think you could help us?” “Yes.Oh, definitely yes.I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made a deal with an exchange of smiles. Something gradually changed after that.____________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball.________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ One possible version: Something gradually changed after that. Meanwhile, the basketball players taught me how to play basketball. I learned a variety of basketball skills from them and became better and better at the sport, which made me have the confidence to take part in basketball games with them.Through basketball, I also made more friends.Gradually, I became more outgoing and had the courage to communicate with others actively. Not only did I help the basketball players, but they also changed me for better.I realised that a bold attempt is half success.
