( A )
I attended a birthday party in 1991. My teacher was then 59 years old. But her fellow teacher said that we were celebrating her 39th birthday. We were all surprised and puzzled.
After the party I was told by the fellow teacher that American women have a special saying about birthdays. If a woman is over 40 or even if she is 80, her birthday is always the 39th. If she is in her thirties, her birthday will be the 29th. And in her twenties, it's the 19th. They usually have their real birthday when they are below 20.
This shows that American women especially elderly women are very sensitive (敏感的) about their ages. But my teacher always says, “We want to be younger”, so about the age of Western women, my advice is that if you don't know it, don't ask about it; if you really know it, don't mention it.

Daddy just didn't know how to show love. It was Mom who held the family together. He just went to work every day and came home and he'd have a list of faults we'd committed and he would scold us about them.
Once when I stole a candy bar, he made me take it back and tell the mall I stole it and that I'd unpack boxes to pay for it. But it was Mom who understood I was just a kid. I broke my leg once on the playground and it was Mom who held me in her arms all the way to hospital.
At my birthday parties, Dad always seemed sort of out of place. He just busied himself blowing up balloons, and setting up tables, and running errands(跑腿). It was Mom who carried in the cake with candles on it for me to blow out.
I remember when Mom told him to teach me how to ride a bicycle. I told him not to let go,but he said it was time. I fell and Mom ran to pick me up, but he waved her off. I was so mad, but I showed him. I got right back on that bike and rode it myself. Ho didn't even feel embarrassed, ho just smiled.
When I went to college, Mom did all the writing. He just sent chocks and a little note about how great his grass looked now that I wasn't playing football on it.
Whenever I called home, he acted like he wanted to talk, but he always said, I'll get your mother. All my life he said “Where are you going?” “What time are you coming home?” “No,you cannot go.” Daddy just didn't know how to show love... Unless… is it possible he showed it and I didn't recognize it?
