One of the important problems in getting beginners to read is that of self-confidence (自信). The key to really building learners' confidence in reading is to prepare them effectively (有效的) to read. This means “warming them up”, encouraging them to be interested in the subject of the reading text, and also pre-teaching the words they will need to really understand and enjoy the text. Similarly, learners can work together once they have read the text.
It is of course helpful to choose a text which is really interesting for the learners, because then they will be more willing to read. Find out what the students like, and then look for suitable reading material. Choosing really interesting material may mean that the text is a little above the level of the learners.
Developing reading abilities in the learners is not about testing them, but about helping them to become better readers. Another important point is in setting the task (任务) in advance of reading, so that learners know exactly what they are going to do. Thus, the chances are that the learners' confidence will be high and they will become better readers.

A. To let the learners know their work. B. To have the learners explain the text.

Eleven students made a volunteer group during the winter vacation to call on people to join the Clean Your Plate Campaign (光盘行动). It calls on people to reduce food waste. They went to many restaurants and told people the importance of saving food. China in these years had serious problems with wasted food. CCTV reported in January that the food Chinese people waste every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable (好客的) and generous (大方的). Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food.
Luckily the campaign has got the support of many people. More than 750 restaurants in Beijing have begun to offer smaller dishes and encourage their guests to take leftovers (剩饭剩菜) home.
To reduce food waste is a big task and it needs time. It's important that everyone does their best. Did you finish your meals today?
