“Have you checked the oil in the car Ted?” my father used to say to me. Sometimes our phone calls would begin and end with an only inquiry (询问)about the oil, without asking anything else. Fathers have lots of love to give, but it’s often provided through useful advice. In my experience, it’s mostly about the car.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? Why can’t the sentences “I care about you” and “You made my life better from the moment you were born” be heard? Because fathers tend to express their true feelings indirectly. You just have to understand the language — Fatherlish (父亲式语言).
When I was 17 years old, I went on my first road trip in that old car. My father stood on the corner on a cold early morning to say goodbye. “Roads are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try driving faster than a horse. And remember to take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time I thought his speech was pretty funny and old.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that if I had owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I would have understood that the speech that I always laughed at was simply Dad’s way to express love and care.
4. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. The author wanted to buy a new car badly.
B. The author forgot to check the oil regularly.
C. The author’s father expressed his love differently.
D. The author’s father preferred to make phone calls.
5. Why does the author mention his first road trip?
A. To show the danger of the trip. B. To present his father’s hidden love.
C. To explain the rules of driving. D. To tell a very exciting experience.
6. How does the author feel about his father’s speech at last?
A Funny. B. Traditional. C. Caring. D. Old.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Speaking Fatherlish B. Making Phone Calls
C. Taking Helpful Advice D. Checking the Oil

Written by Josef Essberger, an experienced English teacher, this book presents a unique method of learning by breaking down the process into seven easy steps. Each step focuses on a different area of language learning, making it suitable for both beginners and advanced learners.
The seven key areas covered in the book are words, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, writing, and pronunciation. The author does not just focus on theoretical (理论的) knowledge, but also offers practical advice and real-life examples to help readers apply what they learn. For many teens (青少年), Saturday mornings are a time to sleep in. After a busy week of waking up early, weekends offer a chance to catch up on rest. A new study finds that sleeping in on weekends — as long as it’s not for more than two additional hours — may help teens feel less anxious (焦虑的).
Sleep is very important for everyone, especially teens, because it helps the brain and body work properly. However, 75% of American teens do not get the recommended (推荐) 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School, homework, and other activities require early wake-ups, and teens usually find it difficult to fall asleep before 11 pm.
In the past, research has suggested that sleeping too much on weekends could cause health problems. But no one had looked closely at how weekend sleep affects anxiety.
Sojeong Kim, a researcher from the University of Oregon, decided to study this. She focused on teens aged 12 to 15, as this is when sleep problems often start. The study used data from around 1,900 teens who had filled out questionnaires about their feelings of anxiety.
The results showed that teens who slept in on weekends had lower anxiety, but only if they slept for less than two additional hours. Teens who didn’t sleep in-or lost sleep on the weekend-reported higher anxiety levels. Those who slept in more than two additional hours had the most anxiety of all.
Kim believes that sleeping too much on weekends can cause “social jet lag”, just like the tiredness people feel when they travel across time zones. For now, she wants teens to know there can be benefits to sleeping in on the weekend. “Getting a little more sleep on weekends might help you feel less anxious,” she says. “But sleeping too much may make things worse.”
12. What does the author want to point out in paragraph 2?
A. It’s hard for teens to get enough sleep.
B. Too much homework is harmful to kids.
C. Most teens sleep for over eight hours.
D. Adults enjoy sleeping late on workdays.
13. What were the teens in the study asked to do?
A. Finish a test paper. B. Answer some questions.
C. Write a diary entry. D. Go to bed early every day.
14 What did the study show about teens sleeping in over two additional hours on weekends?
A. They avoided “social jet lag”. B. They felt calm in the classroom.
C. They experienced higher anxiety. D. They reported a look of satisfaction.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How Early Wake-ups Affect Teens B. The Best Time for Teens to Sleep
C. How Teens End Struggles at School D. Teens’ Catch-up Sleep on Weekends

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I never thought my father’s job could change my life so much. One evening he came home and told us his company was sending him to another city. At first, I didn’t worry, thinking it might be a short trip or just a small change. But then he added that because he and Mom would both be very busy, I would have to go to a boarding (寄宿) school. The word “boarding” made me unhappy. It meant leaving my neighborhood, my old school, and most of all, my best friend June.
June and I grew up together. We rode bikes in the summer, shared secrets at night, and laughed until our stomachs hurt. When I told her about the move, she tried to smile. “It’s okay,” she said quickly. “We’ll call every weekend. We’ll always be best friends,” she added. I wanted to believe her, so I agreed, holding on to her promise. Still, deep inside, a small voice raised doubts: Would things really stay the same once I left?
The new school was nothing like home. The buildings were big, and the students all were friendly, but I still missed home and June. At Saturday night, I sat on my dormitory (学生宿舍) bed waiting for June’s call. At first, we talked a lot, but soon our calls grew shorter. Sometimes she didn’t answer right away. When she did, she often talked about a new student named Emily. “Emily is so cool,” June said once, laughing through the phone. I forced myself to laugh too, but inside I felt hurt.
I told myself I didn’t care, but the truth was that I cared too much. I imagined Emily taking my place, walking beside June, and telling her jokes that used to be mine. I grew jealous (妒忌的). Soon I stopped answering her calls. I left her texts unread. At night, I cried quietly into my pillow, telling myself June didn’t need me anymore.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One Saturday morning, I heard my name called outside the dormitory.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Peter,
Hearing that you need some advice on what to talk about in your lecture on English learning. I’m writing to give you some suggestions.
First of all, perhaps you could focus on English listening and speaking skills, as many students especially those in Grade One are struggling with them. Your practical tips, such as how to improve listening accuracy and how to speak English naturally and fluently, would be helpful. What’s more, introducing some effective and creative ways to enlarge English vocabulary is a wise choice. After all, a rich vocabulary allows us to accurately interpret passages and convey our ideas thoroughly. Additionally, why not add a Q&A session? In this way, students may get immediate feedback in the interactive activity.
Hopefully, my suggestions will be of some help and wish your lecture a great success.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】例文
One Saturday morning, I heard my name called outside the dormitory. To my surprise, it was June, her eyes tired from the long journey. She told me she had been worried when I stopped answering her calls. After begging her parents for permission, she decided to visit me. Sitting together on the bench, she explained gently, “You and Emily are both my friends, but you are unique.” I heard those words, and my sadness melted away. The fear that had been pressing on me for weeks lifted, replaced by the warmth of knowing I still mattered to her.
The next afternoon, I saw June off at the train station. We stood there, not wanting to let go, our eyes filled with both sadness and hope. The train whistle blew, pulling us apart, but inside I felt steady. I knew distance would never break what we shared. There would be phone calls, messages, and visits, each one keeping our ties alive. Walking back alone, I realized true friendship is not measured by how often we are together, but by the certainty that we remain close, even miles apart.
