Dr. Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist and conservationist, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, at the age of 91. Her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees reshaped our understanding of the animal kingdom and inspired generations to protect the natural world.
Beginning her research in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park in 1960, the 26-year-old Goodall brought a fresh perspective to animal behavior studies. With no formal scientific training, she pioneered a compassionate, non-invasive approach to observing chimpanzees. She broke scientific conventions by giving the chimpanzees names like “David Greybeard” instead of numbers, allowing her to document their individual personalities and complex emotional lives. Her patience and dedication led to revolutionary discoveries, including her observation of chimpanzees using and making tools — a capability once thought unique to humans.
Goodall’s most famous discovery came when she witnessed David Greybeard modifying a twig to “fish” for termites. This finding, along with her records of chimpanzees exhibiting behaviors such as hunting, warfare, and displaying emotions like grief and joy, fundamentally challenged the boundaries between humans and other animals. Her methods, initially criticized by some scientists, ultimately revolutionized the field of primatology and established a new paradigm for animal behavior research.
Beyond her scientific contributions, Goodall transformed into a global conservation leader. She established the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 and founded the “Roots & Shoots” youth program in 1991, empowering young people in over 100 countries to take action for people, animals, and the environment. Honored as a UN Messenger of Peace and receiving numerous awards, including the presidential Medal of Freedom, Goodall’s true legacy lies in the enduring hope she instilled in millions worldwide. She proved that one person’s dedication can indeed change the world.
9. What made Goodall’s work significant?
A. She worked extensively with chimpanzees in laboratory environments.
B. She greatly changed our perception of animals and inspired environmental protection.
C. She was mainly recognized for establishing an international wildlife research institute.
D. She proved that formal academic training is useless for important scientific discoveries.
10. Why did Goodall name the chimpanzees instead of numbering them?
A. It helped her to secure more research funding for her project.
B. It was a requirement of the Gombe Stream National Park.
C. It reflected her unique methodology and personal approach to studying animal behavior.
D. It was a common practice among scientists at the time to ensure objectivity.
11. Which of the following best describes Goodall according to the passage?
A. Well-trained and educated.
B. Conventional and determined.
C. Patient and devoted.
D. Competitive and ambitious.
12. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To outline the scientific process of primate tool-making in detail.
B. To criticize the initial skepticism of the scientific community towards a female researcher.
C. To honor the life and highlight her scientific and conservation impacts.
D. To promote the “Roots & Shoots” youth program and encourage reader participation.

Imagine that you are in a crowded place. You do not notice, but someone is watching you and learns your iPhone password(密码). Then, they steal your phone. Suddenly, your photos, documents, financial information, and the rest of your digital life have been taken from you.
Apple, the iPhone maker, recently released an update to its iOS operating system. It has a new feature called Stolen Device Protection (SDP). The feature makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to open the device and access important functions and settings.
Apple says the feature adds extra security for users. It addresses a drawback that thieves have used to lock device owners out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud, and take money from their bank accounts.
SDP keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations”, such as their home or workplace. It also reduces the importance of passwords. Instead, it favors “biometric”(生物识别的)features such as faces or fingerprints, which are a lot harder to copy.
If a thief tries to erase or reset an iPhone, the device will require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to confirm that the person is the rightful owner. The new feature does not let someone use the password or any other backup method.
Another part of the new feature is designed to slow down thieves trying to change security settings. For example, if someone tries to sign out of an Apple ID account, change the password or reset the phone in an unfamiliar location, they will have to authenticate(证实)by using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, and then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.
Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will lead to this feature.
13. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To set a phone-stealing scene.
B. To introduce the following text.
C. To remind readers to be cautious.
D. To explain how password theft directly causes device loss.
14. What can SDP do to add security for users?
A. Stop iCloud files from being deleted.
B. Make it less likely to enter the phone.
C. Secure Apple accounts with remote locking.
D. Prevent thieves from accessing bank accounts.
15. What does SDP require for resetting a stolen iPhone?
A. Previous passwords. B. A new security setting. C. An Apple ID account. D. Identity recognition.
16. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. iPhone’s anti-theft measure. B. Apple ID security settings.
C. Usage of biometric features. D. Apple’s iOS operating system.
【答案】13. B 14. B 15. D 16. A

Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work — it’s how they’ve always done it, and it’s how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason it not only wastes time, but it’s also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.
So how can students manage to study efficiently? One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.
17. Which of the following phenomenon is an example of pseudo-working?
A. Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B. Alice and Sara are sitting on the sofa reading their favorite books.
C. Mike is sitting in the study room in preparation for a final exam quietly.
D. Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
18. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Straight-A students believe some tasks are worth twice the effort.
B. Too much thinking may weaken the brain’s ability of the students.
C. Negative effects of pseudo-working are not fully realized by many students.
D. Students will get good grades once they realize that pseudo-working is ineffective.
19. What does the underlined word “optimal’ mean in paragraph 5?
A. Longest. B. Best. C. Least. D. Effective.
20. Why does the author mention the formula in the text?
A. To show the benefit of working hard.
B. To prove the necessity of accomplishing work.
C. To emphasize the importance of concentration.
D. To explain the reason for spending much time.
【答案】17. D 18. C 19. B 20. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍“伪学习”现象的表现、危害及高效学习的方法。
【17题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard — he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night — but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn’t actually accomplish much.(伪学习者看起来和感觉上都像是在努力学习的人——他或她在图书馆花很长时间,不怕熬夜到很晚——但由于缺乏专注和集中,他或她实际上并没有完成多少事情。)”可知,伪学习的特点是花费大量时间但注意力不集中,收效甚微。杰克在图书馆花很长时间写论文却听着音乐,符合这一特征。故选D项。
【18题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain’s ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand.(这些学生把自己置于容易分心的环境中,坚持长时间学习,这损害了他们清晰高效地思考以完成手头任务的能力。)”以及第四段中的“The bigger problem here is that most students don’t even realize that they’re pseudo-working.(更大的问题是,大多数学生甚至没有意识到自己在伪学习。)”可知,伪学习有负面影响,但很多学生并未完全意识到。故选C项。
【19题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.(一些认知科学研究得出结论,大约50分钟是optimal学习时间,以最大限度地提高每单位时间所学的材料。)”可知,对于学习来说,提高效率非常重要,为了效率的最大化,50分钟的时间应该是“最适合的”或者“最佳的”,所以,“optimal”的意思与Best意义相近。故选B项。
【20题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段中的“One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished = time spent×intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.(以下简单公式体现了一个关键因素:完成的工作量=花费的时间×专注强度。伪学习的特点是专注强度很低。因此,通过伪学习来完成某件事,你需要花费大量时间。另一方面,优等生的方法是最大限度地提高专注强度,以最小化时间。)”可知,作者提到这个公式是为了强调专注的重要性,专注强度高才能在更少时间内完成更多工作。故选C项。

66. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Growing up in a small village in the care of my grandmother affected my childhood with a mix of love and simple pleasures. Every day after school, I’d hurry to Grandmother’s welcoming home, greeted by the smell of freshly baked cookies and the warmth of the fireplace. We would spend hours together gardening, baking, and especially knitting (编织). Each birthday, Grandmother would gift me a hand-knitted sweater with bright colors and complex patterns, which I held dear.
Later, I moved to the city for my studies, leaving the countryside and Grandmother behind. Getting used to the exciting city life and burdened by an increasingly demanding academic schedule, I found myself unwilling to call Grandmother. Although the handmade sweater kept arriving each year, my appreciation for it decreased. The bright, old-fashioned patterns looked out of place among the modern and fashionable clothes of my classmates.
Before my 18th birthday, a package from Grandmother arrived on time again. Inside was Grandmother’s latest creation. The sweater was as colorful as ever, with eye-catching designs, but it might cause embarrassment if I wore it in school. In a moment of disappointment, I threw the sweater aside. “Why couldn’t Grandmother just be like my friends’ relatives who gifted fashionable clothes or smart devices? Why does she stick to such an old-fashioned tradition?” I complained to my mother.
My mother was sad when she heard my words. “Your grandmother is getting older, and her eyesight is not so good as it used to be,” she replied. “Despite this, she insists on keeping the birthday tradition alive.” She continued, her voice trembling (颤抖), “She rejected my advice, spending months knitting that sweater. Every stitch (一针) is filled with her love for you. She could easily buy something from the store, but she chooses to make the sweater because it means something more.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】范文
A sense of shame suddenly washed over me. The realization that I had taken my grandmother’s love for granted struck me deeply. I picked up the sweater, running my fingers over the distinctive patterns that she had painstakingly created for me. Fueled by a surge of gratitude, I dialed my grandmother’s number, my heart pounding. Hearing her voice on the phone, I immediately expressed my heartfelt thanks and promised I would wear the sweater on my birthday. Knowing I was delighted with her present, my grandmother sounded so pleased and we chatted happily for a long time.
On my birthday, I walked into the classroom wearing the sweater. When seeing my special sweater, some of my classmates were curious but others laughed at the old-fashioned design. However, their reaction didn’t bother me. After I explained its story and the love behind it, an expression of envy crossed their face. They showed great admiration for my unique and priceless gift. Wearing the sweater, I felt a profound connection to my grandmother. I proudly saw her creation as a badge of honor.

14 What can SDP do to add security for users?
