The Valley Neighborhood Association is starting a community labor program for local teens, requiring a 2-month commitment with 6 hours of work per weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 to 12:00). This program is open to students aged 15 to 18.
Tasks
Participants will clean public areas, such as picking up litter in the neighborhood park, sweeping sidewalks, and cutting overgrown grass around community facilities. In addition, they will assist with small maintenance work, like repainting benches (长椅) fixing loose fence boards, and cleaning public restrooms in the park. They will also help elderly residents with simple household work, such as carrying groceries, watering plants, and sorting daily rubbish — with permission from the seniors in advance. All necessary tools such as gloves, brooms and paintbrushes will be provided by the association.
Requirements
Participants are required to be responsible and hardworking, with the ability to work in small teams. No special skills are needed, but a willingness to learn and follow instructions is essential. Since the work involves outdoor activities, participants should be in good health and able to stand or walk for a long time. A 30-minute safety coaching will be offered before participants’ first day of work, and failing to attend it will result in the loss of their right to join the program.
Benefits
All participants will receive a community service certificate after completing the program, which can be used for college applications. Those who finish over 40 hours of labor will receive a $50 store credit at a local bookstore. What’s more, the association will hold a closing event to honor excellent participants, who will be awarded a “Community Service Star” medal and a letter of recommendation from the neighborhood director.
1. What are the participants required to do for the elderly?
A. Prepare meals. B. Classify garbage.
C. Teach them to learn. D. Repair loose furniture.
2. What can lead to disqualification?
A. Lacking necessary skills. B. Failing to work outdoors.
C. Missing a pre-job training. D. Having no related experience.
3. What can a participant gain after working over 40 hours for the community?
A. A college application. B. An official reference letter.
C. An honorable medal. D. A bookstore credit.

Nearly two years ago, a group of fourth-graders at Sabetha Elementary School in Kansas started a conversation about fruit.
These students wanted to know why Kansas didn’t have an official fruit, like more than 30 other states do. A fruit is one example of a state symbol — an object that represents a state’s traditions and values. Other state symbols include flags, flowers, and birds. The students decided that Kansas should have its own state fruit. And they were determined to make it happen. “They really worked as a team to achieve this goal,” says their teacher, Jobi Wertenberger.
The kids were about to find out what it takes to create a new law. Wertenberger asked state lawmaker Randy Garber to speak to the class. Garber explained all the steps to get a new state symbol. Most importantly, it would require that a new law be passed. Garber explained that the Kansas state legislature (立法机构) normally meets for 90 days each year. He didn’t think they had enough time to get a bill passed. Then, the kids had to wait for the next year. By then, Wertenberger’s students moved up to fifth grade. But he got his new fourth-graders involved too.
While researching, the kids learned an attempt two years before to get an official state fruit had failed. Thomas Richardson had an idea. The 11-year-old suggested they get more kids involved. Wertenberger emailed teachers at other schools. Before long, more than 400 fourth and fifth-graders from 24 schools gathered. In January of the following year, Wertenberger’s class sent voting papers to other schools, and after all votes were counted, the sandhill plum (李子) proved to be the clear winner. Then, they drafted a bill naming it the state fruit of Kansas and introduced it into the state legislature.
The kids wrote letters to their state representatives and some of them spoke before the legislature. On April 12th of that year, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed the bill into law.
4. What made the students discuss fruit?
A. The lack of their state symbol.
B. The teacher’s after-class assignment.
C. The introduction of a new state law.
D. The idea of changing traditional values.
5. Why did the students put off presenting their bill to the state legislature?
A. To get more students involved.
B. To learn more about the failure.
C. To leave the legislature more time.
D. To clarify the steps to establish a law.
6. What is Thomas Richardson?
A. A state representative. B. A state lawmaker.
C. A school teacher. D. A local student.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. Many hands make light work.
B. Ups and downs make one strong.
C Curious minds never feel contented.
D. Success knocks at your door only once.

Scientists have made a surprising discovery about Bogong moths (蛾) — small brown moths in southeast Australia. Each spring, billions of these insects take an incredible trip, flying over 1,000 kilometers to reach caves (洞穴) in the Australian Alps.
The moths make this trip to get away from the heat. When they reach the cooler temperatures of the mountains, they gather on the cave walls and sleep for months. In the fall, the moths fly all the way back. But scientists have long wondered: How do the young moths, who have never traveled, know where to fly to? Eric Warrant, a Swedish scientist, says, “It’s totally amazing.”
Previous studies showed the moths used the Earth’s magnetic (磁) field to guide them, but scientists wondered if they also use stars. Deep in Australia’s countryside — far from human lights — the stars shine brightly. To test these ideas, Warrant and his team caught about 400 moths. They tested each moth in a specially designed flying space. Inside this space, the moths were attached in a way that allowed them to move their wings and fly any way they wanted, but not leave the area.
To make sure the moths weren’t being guided by the Earth’s magnetic field, the researchers blocked the field using a special electronic device. The scientists then projected images of the starry night sky on the top of the flying space. Sure enough, the moths flew in the correct direction. When the researchers turned the image, the moths also turned so that they were still lined up correctly under the stars.
Then the researchers mixed up the stars on the top of the space so that they no longer represented a real night sky. The moths became perplexed. They didn’t know which way to fly all at once. This showed the moths were using the stars as a guide. The moths’ small eyes can probably only see very bright stars, so it’s likely they use them as a guide. On cloudy days, they use their backup — Earth’s magnetic field.
8. Which season do Bogong moths fly to the Alps to avoid?
A. Spring. B. Summer. C. Autumn. D. Winter.
9. What gave the scientists inspiration about doing the experiment?
A. The stars in the night sky. B. The Earth’s magnetic field.
C. The countryside human lights. D. The living place of these moths.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss?
A. The process of the experiment.
B. The power of the magnetic field.
C. The basic theory of the experiment.
D. The guiding abilities of the moths.
11. What does the underlined word “perplexed” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Interested. B. Encouraged. C. Frightened. D. Confused.

Soon after he was born, doctors knew that KJ Muldoon was struggling. Tests showed that KJ’s DNA had a mistake which made it hard for his body to clear out a dangerous chemical called ammonia. Too much ammonia can damage the brain and other organs seriously.
When the human body digests proteins (蛋白质), it creates ammonia. In a healthy person, the liver (肝脏) helps get rid of this ammonia. But because of the problem with his genes, KJ’s liver couldn’t remove ammonia. Doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) asked KJ’s parents if they wanted to try a brand-new method — a special medicine made just for KJ. His parents said yes.
Scientists at Penn Medicine had been working on creating medicines to fix a single patient’s genes. Now they had a chance to try it. But the pressure was on, as there was little time to help KJ. The researchers studied KJ’s DNA. The problem was like fixing one misspelled letter in a word that’s three billion letters long. With many scientists working long hours, soon they developed a CRISPR tool to edit KJ’s DNA. Next, they tested the new medicine on mice and monkeys. The results were positive. After just six months, the new medicine was approved. KJ was six months old when he got the first dose of the new medicine, designed to reach his liver and make one tiny change to his DNA.
Soon after the first treatment, his body’s levels of ammonia were controlled. The positive results led his doctors to give KJ two more doses. KJ has gained weight and is now much healthier. Soon, the hospital expects him to go home for the first time in his life. KJ isn’t completely cured. He may need to keep taking medicine. As Dr. Rebecca Ahrens-Nicklas, an assistant professor at CHOP, says, “We have made real progress and right now the signs are promising. But we’re still in early days right now.”
12. What do we know about ammonia?
A. It mainly digests human proteins.
B. The genes remove it automatically.
C. It changes a healthy person’s DNA.
D. The liver acts as its natural enemy.
13. Why does the author mention a word that’s three billion letters long?
A. To praise the scientists’ efforts.
B. To show the medicine’s effect.
C. To emphasize the task’s challenge.
D. To explain the gene editing process.
14. What is the author’s attitude to the result of the brand-new method?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Unclear. D. Concerned.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. CRISPR’s Application in Medicine
B. A Personalized Gene Editing Success
C. A Medical Breakthrough for Humans
D. The Battle Against a Genetic Disease

Willa’s hands gently touched the hand-made bookmarks (书签). They were decorated with colorful paper flowers, and she had spent three weekends making them.
The school would hold a charity sale to help poor students in the countryside, and Willa wanted to sell these bookmarks to raise money. Her deskmate Gavin, who ran the sale’s book corner, had promised to help her find a good spot. She wanted Gavin to check the bookmarks first.
Early that morning Willa put the bookmarks into the box and took it to the classroom. Gavin’s eyes lit up at the beautifully decorated bookmarks, praising them as unique and lovely. Willa’s confidence grew; she imagined the bookmarks selling well, allowing her to raise more money. She carefully put the box back into her schoolbag, then went to the library to borrow a few books and stuffed them into the bag too. The library was crowded, so she hurried out. Her bag was so full that the bookmark box slipped out and fell to the ground, but she didn’t notice at all.
The next day, Willa rushed to the playground where the charity sale would be held. But when she opened her schoolbag, her face turned pale — the box of bookmarks was gone. She emptied her bag in a hurry: textbooks, notebooks, a water bottle fell out, but no box.
She hurried to the classroom and searched everywhere around her seat, but the box was nowhere to be found. At that moment, Gavin came over to ask, “What’s wrong?” “My bookmarks... they’re gone,” Willa whispered. She had worked so hard on them, and now she couldn’t help the poor students. The charity sale had already started, and other students were busy selling their items. Willa stood there, feeling helpless and sad.
Gavin asked her where else she had been before leaving school the previous day, and she said she also went to the library. Gavin suggested that she go there to ask.

A. Interested. B. Encouraged. C. Frightened. D. Confused.

根据第一段中“Each spring, billions of these insects take an incredible trip, flying over 1,000 kilometers to reach caves (洞穴) in the Australian Alps.(每年春天,数十亿只这种昆虫都会进行一次惊人的迁徙,它们要飞行超过 1000 公里,前往澳大利亚阿尔卑斯山的洞穴中。)”以及第二段中“The moths make this trip to get away from the heat. When they reach the cooler temperatures of the mountains, they gather on the cave walls and sleep for months. (这些蛾类进行这次迁徙是为了躲避高温。当它们到达山区较为凉爽的环境中时,就会聚集在洞穴的墙壁上,休眠数月。)”可知,这些蛾子每年春天飞到澳大利亚阿尔卑斯山的洞穴是为了躲避夏天的炎热。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Previous studies showed the moths used the Earth’s magnetic (磁) field to guide them, but scientists wondered if they also use stars. Deep in Australia’s countryside — far from human lights — the stars shine brightly. To test these ideas, Warrant and his team caught about 400 moths.(此前的研究表明,这些蛾类利用地球的磁场来导航,但科学家们也想知道它们是否还会利用星星。在澳大利亚的偏远乡村——远离人类灯光的地方——星星闪耀着明亮的光芒。为了验证这些想法,瓦伦特和他的团队捕捉了约 400 只蛾子。)”可知,之前的研究表明蛾子利用地球磁场导航,但科学家怀疑它们是否也利用星星,澳大利亚乡村远离人类灯光,星星很明亮,为了验证这些想法科学家做了实验,所以是夜空中的星星给了科学家做实验的灵感。故选A。
根据第四段中“To make sure the moths weren’t being guided by the Earth’s magnetic field, the researchers blocked the field using a special electronic device. The scientists then projected images of the starry night sky on the top of the flying space.(为了确保这些飞蛾并非是受到地球磁场的引导,研究人员使用了一种特殊的电子设备来屏蔽磁场。随后,科学家们在飞行空间的顶部投射出星空的图像。)”可知,详细描述了实验的过程,先排除地球磁场干扰,然后在飞行空间顶部投影星空图像等,所以该段主要讨论的是实验过程。故选A。
根据画线词下文“They didn’t know which way to fly all at once.(它们一下子不知道该往哪个方向飞了。)”
D
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据第四段中的“Soon after the first treatment, his body’s levels of ammonia were controlled. The positive results led his doctors to give KJ two more doses. KJ has gained weight and is now much healthier. Soon, the hospital expects him to go home for the first time in his life. KJ isn’t completely cured. He may need to keep taking medicine.(第一次治疗后不久,他体内的氨水平就得到了控制。

One possible version:
Growth: A Unique Journey
I once joined a class speech contest, which turned out to be a key part of my growth.
At first, I was too nervous to speak in public. However, my English teacher encouraged me to try. Then, every evening, I read my speech aloud, and corrected my pronunciation. On the contest day, I took a deep breath and spoke bravely. Though I didn’t win first place, I got warm cheers from the class.
This experience teaches me that growth needs courage to face fears. It also shows me that not giving up leads to progress. Every small step helps us become better on our unique journey.

Early that morning, Willa put the bookmarks into the box and took it to the classroom.

One possible version:
Willa followed Gavin’s advice. She rushed to the school library, her heart beating fast with nervousness and hope. As soon as she saw the librarian, she asked anxiously if a small box had been found. The librarian nodded and said. “A student found it and turned it in to me. I’m just about to hand it in to the school lost and found office.” Then, she took out the box from the counter. Willa recognized it right away. Touching the undamaged bookmarks, she thanked the librarian repeatedly.
Willa took the bookmarks to the charity sale quickly. Gavin had already kept a good position for her near the book corner. While she laid out the colorful bookmarks, Gavin helped attract nearby students. “These bookmarks are all made by myself; every act of buying helps those in need!” Willa said gently. Soon, many students came to buy, and the bookmarks were sold out quickly. Looking at the money in the donation box, Willa felt warm in her heart, glad that she could finally realize her wish of helping others.
