Poppy stood in front of the mirror, admiring herself. Her new dress was perfect. It was her favorite colour of blue and had a row of bows (蝴蝶结) down the front.
Poppy’s mother was making her famous fruit juice. “My goodness, sweetheart, why are you dressed up today?” she asked. “I’m trying on my dress for picture day tomorrow,” Poppy explained. “I want to make sure everything is perfect.”
“Well, I think you’re already perfect,” her mom said. “Be careful. Don’t spill it.” Poppy rolled her eyes, grabbing a cup of fruit and gulping (大口地) it down.
Seconds later, her mom cried, “Oh, sweetheart — you spilled your juice!” Poppy looked down at the spots on her dress. She couldn’t go to school picture day like this! Her class picture would be in the yearbook forever. “It will be all right,” her mom said positively. “I’ll wash it tonight. It’ll be as good as new.”
The next morning, Poppy got up early to fetch her dress, and tried it on right away. She pulled it over her head, but something wasn’t right. Poppy failed to lower her arms, and her favorite bows got twisted (扭曲的). “Oh, no!” Poppy cried. “My dress shrank!” She ran to her closet to find something else she could wear. Finally, in the back of the closet, Poppy found an old yellow dress. Nevertheless, it would have to do.
While waiting for the class’s turn, she hoped it would never come. Maybe the camera couldn’t work or it happened to rain cats and dogs!
The class finally reached the stage. “All right,” the photographer called. “I guess we all have something we don’t like about our looks. None of us is perfect.”
Poppy looked around. Rosa had a bandage taped across her nose. Tom crossed his legs, trying to hide his mismatched socks. Lei flashed a Jack-o’-lantern grin, showing several missing teeth. We’re all different, she thought. Maybe that’s what makes us special. Poppy let go of her worry. “Cheese!” the photographer culled out. The flash went off as the photographer snapped the picture of the yearbook. Poppy smiled her brightest. The picture day hadn’t gone the way she had planned. It had gone even better. “Perfect anyway!” she cried.
4. How did Poppy feel when she looked into the mirror?
A. Upset. B. Relaxed. C. Excited. D. Nervous.
5. What happened to Poppy’s new blue dress the next morning?
A. It was covered with spots.
B. It became too small to wear.
C. It was not as bright as before.
D. It was broken when pulled down.
6. Why did Poppy think picture day was perfect in the end?
A. She found her classmates on stage all liked their looks.
B. The photographer cheered her up and eased her anxiety.
C. She realized and accepted her difference and uniqueness.
D. The picture of the yearbook satisfied her as she had expected.
7. What can be learned from the story?
A. Our differences make us unique. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Parents’ advice is always helpful. D. A stranger can make a difference.
C
Holidays are often described as picture-perfect moments: families happily united around a table filled with seasonal food favorites against a perfect background. For many parents, making efforts to meet such unrealistic expectations can destroy their self-worth gradually. In the real world, parents are juggling (同时兼顾) more activities from work to home. It’s all too easy to fall into survival parenting, one way where the focus is on simply getting through the day. These holidays can feel like anything but a holiday.
U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a warning in August 2024 calling for a rapid recovery of parental well-being. Murthy along with scientists and parents sees that the modern-day stress of parenting is seriously affecting the physical and mental health of caregivers. He states his deep worries about reports that most days, nearly half of all parents feel seriously stressed.
Data from a 2022 Household Pulse Survey found that most of parents — including 35% with children under 5 and 54% with children between 5 and 11 — have no formal child care support. This is surely caused, in part, by two facts: the rising costs for child care and fewer choices for child’s day care.
The research shows that focusing only on getting through the day with your kids is connected to more stress and harsher (严苛的) parenting behaviors. When a mom or dad is in survival mode, it’s possible for them to shout requests and criticize their children’s behavior, instead of thinking through the impacts of these behaviors. Stressed-out parents are quicker to criticize little things that get in the way of reaching immediate goals, such as spilling (洒出) flour on the floor. And they are slower to notice and admit their child’s strengths, such as their interest in helping in the kitchen.
However, bringing joy back to parenting during holidays — and any time of the year — is more direct than the “perfect” meal plans on social platforms. The secret to getting away from surviving the moment is to refocus on the future you want to create.
8. What is the parents’ real situation during the holidays according to the passage?
A. They fight hard through great stress.
B. They improve their parenting mode for kids.
C. They effortlessly reunite with a large family.
D. They deal with work-from-home tasks easily.
9. What’s the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To tell readers the fact of rising costs.
B. To showcase the parents’ stress.
C. To analyze causes of parents’ stress.
D. To explain how to get the data.
10. What will be most likely discussed after the last paragraph?
A. Ways to achieve long-term family goals.
B. Practical steps to bring back parenting joy.
C. Several perfect meal plans for good parents.
D. The kind of future for parents to build for families.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Holiday Daycare Crisis: A Hidden Threat to Parents
B. Harsh Holiday Parenting: Stress Shaping Child Behavior
C. Behind Parental Burnout: Holidays Hurting Modern Families
D. Beyond Holiday Survival Mode: Rebuilding Parenting well-being

An art exhibition about Chinese calligraphy
Last week witnessed a calligraphy art exhibition held by our school, which exposed us to the charm of traditional Chinese art. Here is the detailed information about it.
The exhibition, lasting from Wednesday to Friday in the school hall, attracted all students of different grades and our teachers. During the event, a large number of students presented their calligraphy works, which not only showed the unique beauty of Chinese calligraphy, but also served as a bridge connecting the splendid Chinese culture and younger generation. The atmosphere was lively, with some of our teachers creating several impressive works on the spot.
This activity turned out to be a rewarding experience, enabling us to admire the beauty of Chinese calligraphy and students were all looking forward to another one.
