When Will Fall Leaves Peak For You? — Late September or Early October: The Rockies, the northern parts of Minnesota through Michigan and a stretch from upstate New York to northern New England see peak color first. — Mid to Late October: Potential for peak fall color advances through the Midwest into the Appalachians and much of the Northeast in mid to late October. Most other areas in the western region, including valleys, see fall’s brightest color by this time of year as well. — November: Much of the mid-Atlantic coast and the South are the last holdouts to see peak color in November. Why Do Leaves Change Color? A shorter amount of daylight is the primary factor for the color of the leaves to begin to change. As nights grow longer and cooler, production of the green pigment (色素) slows and eventually stops. This allows the yellow and orange pigments to shine through, revealing the many beautiful colors of fall. What Makes A Good Colorful Season? Location matters: Higher altitudes and northern latitudes cool first, causing earlier color changes. Weather’s role: The perfect recipe includes warm, sunny days paired with cool nighttime temperatures. Soil moisture (湿度): Sufficient soil moisture through spring and summer can help increase the chances of the colorful leaves. Wind warning: If a strong windstorm affects an area that’s near peak color, then it can tear off leaves from trees to some extent, reducing the display of peak color. So grab your camera, plan your trip, and get ready for nature’s colorful delight! 1. When can you enjoy peak fall color in valleys of the western region? A. Late September. B. Early October. C. Late October. D. Mid November. 2. What mainly causes the change of leaf colors? A. Rainy nights in autumn. B. Reduced daylight hours. C. Uncovered pigments. D. Rising temperature. 3. What may ruin the full display of peak color? A. The wet soil. B. The tree species. C. The hot summer. D. The severe storm. B When James Shapland spotted a gap in the market for a dog-friendly café that was half-way between a tiny, trendy coffee shop and a large chain, he started one himself, Coffi Lab — coffi is Welsh for coffee and the lab refers to Labradors (a breed of dog). It’s not his first try in coffee shops. He sold his first business, Coffee #1, in 2011 for about £10 million to SA Brain, the Welsh brewer. However, he missed his business after the sale. He spent 2017 on a plan for a sourdough café, inspired by the success of the pizza chain Franco Manca, but shelved the idea because “the market seemed a little too good to be true”. In 2020, he sensed an unmet need for cafés that had enough “space to take my labrador in”. His plan was to open coffee shops big enough for dogs and their owners, with friendly staff selling good food and coffee. Coffi Lab also donates the profits from the homemade dog biscuits it sells, plus first-day takings from each store it opens. So far, it has raised more than £100,000 for Guide Dogs charity and sponsored 11 dogs in training. Coffi Lab now has 11 sites, with number 12 opening soon in Pontcanna, and three more over the next year in Wiltshire and Shropshire, all within 100 miles from its base in Cardiff. “I feel quite strongly about being able to visit frequently, so it’s not going to become a one-a-week blind expansion,” he said. Coffi Lab began doing its own baking in 2023, when Shapland decided that buying in pre-packaged baked goods and sandwiches wouldn’t keep customers coming back. “When you do that, you end up with average food that you’re selling for £5 and it’s not what people want” — especially when they are paying £4 for a coffee. 4. What sets Coffi Lab apart in the first two paragraphs? A. A middle-positioned café concept. B. A sourdough café plan. C. A former Coffee #1 brand. D. A pizza-chain model. 5. What does Coffi Lab do besides serving food and coffee? A. Provide dog training sessions. B. Run a dog welfare foundation. C. Donate dog biscuits to charity. D. Fund a dog charitable organization. 6. Which word best describes Shapland’s business approach? A. Thoughtless. B. Strategic. C. Idealistic. D. Careful. 7. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean? A. Coffee prices have been rising. B. Food shouldn’t cost more than coffee. C. Food and coffee should be priced reasonably. D. Customers expect better food for their money. C For its prey (猎物), a cone snail is a deadly threat — its tiny size hides enough venom (毒液) in one sting to kill. Surprisingly, that same venom may also have medical value, especially in helping people sleep. Previous research has shown that toxins from cone snails can be used as painkillers. Recently, Indian scientists Jayaseelan B. Franklin and R. P. Rajesh discovered that some of these toxins may also cause sleep. They studied a rarely researched species, the cobweb cone snail (Conus araneosus), which lives in the Gulf of Mannar, and searched its venom for useful compounds. Cone snail venom contains hundreds of small molecules called peptides (肽), known as conotoxins (芋螺毒素). Franklin and Rajesh isolated 14 peptides and selected five for further study. After the substances were purified, they were given to lab mice. The results were fast and surprising: within two to four minutes, the mice fell asleep and remained so for about two hours. Higher doses led to longer sleep. According to Franklin, the mice only fully returned to normal activity after nine or ten hours. These findings are important because they suggest possible treatments for human sleep problems such as insomnia and sleep apnea. “Finding the mechanism that caused this effect on the mice will open up future applications including drug development,” says Franklin. Cone snails hunt slowly but rely on powerful toxins to stop prey instantly. Their venom is delivered through a harpoon-like tooth that blocks normal cellular function, leaving the victim unable to move. Scientists have long been interested in cone snail venom, and over 100 conotoxins are currently being tested for treating diseases including cancer pain, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease. In 2004, a cone snail-based painkiller stronger than morphine was approved for medical use. With around 800 cone snail species, each producing hundreds of unique peptides, researchers believe there is still much to discover. 8. What is the most important conclusion about cone snails drawn from the passage? A. They hunt swiftly with harpoon-like teeth. B They produce venom with multiple effects. C. They are dangerous to humans. D. Their toxins work in only one way. 9. Which statement is NOT supported by the research? A. The effect was tested on mice. B. Higher doses caused longer sleep. C. The venom works in humans. D. More research is still needed. 10. What can be inferred about future research? A. Most cone snails are dangerous. B. Venom studies are nearly complete. C. Many useful peptides remain unknown. D. Sleep drugs will appear soon. 11. What might be the best title for the passage? A. A New Discovery of Cone Snail Venom B. How Cone Snails Hunt Prey Efficiently C. The Development of Cone Snail-Based Drugs D. Sleepless? Cone Snail Venom Offers New Hope D Gen Z is changing the rules of work, and the results are redefining what professional success looks like in 2025. According to a new Glassdoor report, “career minimalism” is at the heart of this shift. In Glassdoor’s survey of more than 1,000 U. S. professionals, a striking 68% of Gen Z respondents said they wouldn’t pursue management if it weren’t for paycheck or title, signaling a rejection of the traditional corporate climb favored by previous generations and a belief that management is something of a poisonous chalice (圣杯). The survey, however, is somewhat at odds with other data collected by Glassdoor. Daniel Zhao, chief economist for the company, told Fortune that an earlier report had found Gen Z entering the ranks of management at the same rates as older generations did. “Management is not for everybody, and that’s okay,” he said, “but it is still seen as the best path for climbing the career ladder.” What the new survey suggests is that management is now seen as a career-ladder move, not something good in its own right. Gen Z approaches life’s traditional milestones with “reasoned skepticism”. They are hungry for coaching and welcome in-office collaboration yet also desire the death of the nine-to-five mentality and embrace flexibility. If Gen Z isn’t less ambitious yet isn’t thrilled about corporate management, where’s that energy going? The report cited Harris Poll findings that 57% of Gen Z currently have a side hustle (副业) compared to 48% of millennials and 31% of Gen Xers. Side hustles are central to Gen Z’s identity, offering creative or activist outlets that main jobs cannot supply. For many, the “day job” simply finances the “passion project” — as one Glassdoor community member put it: “I always joke that I don’t dream of labor... If people were truly passionate about their job, it wouldn’t pay anything. Passion is for your five-nine after the nine-five.” When Gen Zers do move into management, Glassdoor finds that they’re rewriting the traditional textbook. Gen Z is reconsidering what it means to be successful at work in this moment. They’re not rejecting ambition — they’re redirecting it toward sustainable career paths that prioritize both financial security and personal fulfillment. 12. Why is Daniel Zhao quoted in paragraph 3? A. To draw attention to a new concept. B. To confirm the accuracy of the report. C. To raise awareness of a worrying trend. D. To offer another perspective on the survey. 13. What do we know about Gen Z at work? A. They value titles over personal time. B. They avoid cooperating with colleagues. C. They seek guidance from senior staff. D. They prefer fixed nine-to-five hours. 14. What factors may Gen Z consider in side hustles? A. High pay and grand titles. B. Short hours and easy work. C. Personal identity and flexibility. D. Benefits and working conditions. 15. What is the professional success defined by Gen Z? A. Earning money with meaning. B. Winning power through effort. C. Dropping promotion for hobbies. D. Staying put for financial security. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 A Song for Love — An Ape with an App Two wild apes have a professor and a pop star to act as high-tech matchmakers (红娘)! ____16____ Our young would-be lovers are Skywalker Gibbons (天行者长臂猿), a new ape species announced in 2017. With only a handful left in the Gaoligong Mountains on the China-Myanmar border, every couple matters. Singing is central to a gibbon’s life, and their calls can travel for miles. Deep in the jungle, a lone female sings each morning, in the hope of winning a life-long partner. A single male lives twenty miles away — but they can’t find each other over the long distance. ____17____ Without help, they may never find each other. That help comes from an unlikely duo: Beijing pop star Xingyu Lee and Professor Fan, leader of the research team on Skywalker Gibbons. They have designed and built a system of microphones and speakers that link two locations across the jungle. ____18____ In human terms, they have an effective dating app — and it has the gibbon scientists of the world buzzing. Professor Fan is determined to make an all-wild match. ____19____ They duet (二重唱), and as one gibbon searches for the other, drawn by the songs, Fan and Lee move the speakers, and guide the gibbons through the jungle maze until they are within natural earshot. ____20____ The landscape is steep, and the equipment must be moved again and again to guide the singers closer. Scientists like Fan works with local villagers, even poachers and city engineers to keep the system running in the wild. The project becomes a rare partnership between people who once lived off the forest and those who now seek to save it. Thanks to a dating app and a wild love song down the telephone, the two Skywalker Gibbons are now about to meet — a match that could determine the future of a species. A. Still, many challenges remain. B. For the first time, wild gibbons can sing together. C. Professor Fan has spent many years studying rare apes. D. In a first attempt, he connects a wild pair by telephone. E. It’s a crisis for a rare species, and calls for an immediate solution. F. Despite the challenges, villagers and engineers work hand in hand. G. The story is as dramatic as any opera and may decide the future of a species. Last month, I talked about my recreational shopping on my social media. She had no choice but moved from New Zealand to Canada to live with her father Thomas. Thomas was an inventor, living on a farm. He brought Amy back to his mossy house, which had not been cleaned up for years. Most of the rooms in the house were used for storing his gliders (滑翔机) and their parts. One day, Amy happened to see Thomas testing his glider but he soon crashed in the surrounding field. Scared and unsure if her father was all right, Amy heard his father’s shout of triumph (胜利). She couldn’t understand her father’s strange behavior so that she barely talked with him. “My new life is absolutely miserable!” Amy thought with tears in her eyes. It was not until Amy found the eggs that her life changed. While exploring the area around the farm, Amy discovered an abandoned nest of 16 goose eggs under a fallen tree. She gathered all of the eggs and brought them back to the barn where she took a heating lamp to provide light and warmth for them. One afternoon after school, Amy was thrilled to discover all of the eggs had hatched (孵化). The baby geese and Amy looked at each other and a bond immediately formed. The geese assumed Amy, the first thing they saw, was their mother. Amy asked his father, “Can I keep the baby geese, please?” “Yes,” “Thomas agreed. Although he knew there would be a lot of challenges waiting for them, it might be a chance to improve their relationship. Looking after the baby geese very carefully, Amy even named all of them like a real mother. Soon winter arrived, it was the time for migrant birds like geese to go south for the cold days. Thomas made a great many attempts to teach the geese to fly but none of them followed him. They just stuck close to Amy all the time. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Frustrated, Thomas decided to teach Amy, their “mother”, how to fly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally that day came, Thomas and Amy each flew a glider, leading the geese towards south. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 杭州第四中学2025学年第一学期高二年级期末考试 英语试题卷 考生须知: 1. 1. A grab-and-go option allows quick access to balanced meals like sandwiches, fruits, or yogurt, saving time without compromising nutrition. Additionally, it reduces canteen congestion during peak hours, which will ensure better operations. By prioritizing efficiency and health, this service aligns with the school’s goal of fostering disciplined yet well-nourished learners. In short, this small change could make a big difference in students’ daily routines and well-being. 第二节 (满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】One possible version: Paragraph 1: Frustrated, Thomas decided to teach Amy, their “mother”, how to fly. Thomas and Amy went back to the room where Thomas was working. He told Amy “Boy, to be a good ‘mother’, you should set a good example to them, so you had better learn how to fly a glider by yourself. Of course, I will be your teacher.” After hearing the news, Amy felt excited. With father’s help, Amy gradually learned how to fly a glider. Paragraph 2: Finally, that day came, Thomas and Amy each flew a glider, leading the geese towards south. After the incident, Amy considered her father was one of the greatest inventors. And Amy often followed Thomas to test their new gliders. Staring at the sky, they felt close and pleasant. The relationship between was greatly improved.
