American summer camps offer young people a chance to play many sports. These camps may be in the mountains, in the woods, or at a lake. Some camps teach activities like painting or music. Some teach computer programming or foreign languages. Children at all kinds of camps meet new friends. They learn new skills and develop their experience during the period of camp time. Above all, they learn to be independent(独立的) without parents around them.
Some children go to camp during the day and return home at night. Others stay at camp all day and all night, which is called an overnight camp. Such kind of camp is more expensive. Camps last for between one and eight weeks. Prices are different. Generally, the longer the camp is, the higher the price is.
Children from poor families might not have a chance to take part in summer camps. The Fresh Air Fund is a well-known organization which raises money to help poor children to be well educated. Each summer it sends ten thousand poor children to stay with families in the country or to five camps in New York State.
Summer camps have become very important to millions of families. Many American women now work outside the home. Working parents need a place where their children can be taken good care of during the summer when they are not in school.
Young people who like the arts can learn about painting, music, acting or writing. Camps that offer programs in science and environmental studies are popular, too. There are also camps for older children who like adventures. These campers take long trips by bicycle or boat. They can go rock climbing or ride horses. Other summer camps in America help children learn about foreign culture or help them lose weight.

Good health is very important. Everyone should do all he can to stay healthy. Being in good health means having both body and mind in good order, free from illness and pain.
Good food, plenty of water, and plenty of rest all help in keeping our machines running as they should. Food does many things for our bodies. It gives what we need for keeping good health. It gives us energy for work and play. No food gives everything we need. We should eat foods of different kinds. Having enough to eat is not the same as having the right food.
The water we drink helps wash away wastes inside our bodies. It also puts back the water we lose when we perspire(流汗). Our bodies are actually made by more than half water. We must drink enough to replace what we lose.
We feel better and look better when we are clean. A bath every one or two days is a good rule for most of us. Brushing our teeth is an important part of keeping clean.
Sleep is the best kind of rest. Growing children need more sleep than grown-ups. Children’s bodies not only have to be repaired; they also have to grow, no one’s body can grow bigger properly while he is working and playing and exhausted(筋疲力尽).
It has been useful to work for good health. Millions of years ago, people live only 20 years. Now people can live about 70 years. It has gone up 20 years just since the beginning of the 20th century.
9. You are thought to be healthy only when ______.
A. Your body is working properly B. you can do all you like to
C. both your mind and body work well D. you have good food to eat
10. You should have foods of different kinds because ______.
A. some foods are hot food B. no food can give everything you need
C. different foods tastes different D. different people like different foods

A. give us energy B. wash away wastes in our bodies

12. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. About half of man’s body is water .
B. If one’s mind doesn’t work well, he is not considered to be healthy.
C. Having enough food means having the healthy food.
D. Grown- ups sleep less than children because they have a lot of work to do.
D
①It's test time again.Have you done enough work to get good marks?Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow doesn't work.
②The best way is to space your practice out,not to put it all together.Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises,if you organize(组织) five hours of study into one hour a day,you will remember more than if you study for five hours on one day.
③Don't depend on memory alone.Get pens and paper and start working!By testing themselves earlier, students will be better at retrieving the knowledge(知识)from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky,a researcher in the US,suggests that "you start by reading a textbook with your favorite pens and colors, and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so,you try to test yourselves on them in fact."
④Going over what you have learned carefully should give you confidence, but if you are still worried,it's not harmful to follow some special customs(习俗).For example,it seems to be a tradition for Japanese students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and meat pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word "katsu",meaning "winning".For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before a test, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their“lucky underwear”.
⑤The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well at night before the test, and believe that what you have tried to do will bring you success.Good luck in your test!
13. What is the best way to get good marks according to the passage ?
A. Spacing your practice out . B. Testing yourselves earlier .
B. Going over what you have learnt. D. Sleeping well before the test .
14. What does the underlined word “retrieving” probably mean ?
A. Giving away . B. Filling in . C. Getting back . D. Making up
15. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 4?
A.The word“Katsudon”sounds similar to “winning?” in South Korea.
B.In some countries, washing hair brings bad luck after having exams.
C.Some people might wear special underwear before important events.
D. Following some special customs can help get good marks .

A Dream Comes True
As a young girl,I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost impossible for a woman to do that.
A taste of flying came at last in 2001.I got a chance to ride in a hot air balloon on my birthday. But it was not as exciting as I expected. We went up directly high in the air and right back down moving around very low.
Later,I wished I could skydive(特技跳伞) some day!So when I heard there was a chance to let my dream come true,I decided to take it.
However,my children were very nervous about it.They asked me to talk things over with my doctor before that. When I told the doctor what I was planning to do,he said,"An 84﹣year﹣old woman like you could break bones during the landing."But all this could not stop me from having a try and flying into the air.
On June 11,2013,I went up in a plane with my coach(教练).When it reached13,000 feet high in the sky—a good enough height for skydiving,we threw ourselves out of the plane. When we first hit the air,the wind was very strong. But after a short while,it became better. We were in a free fall for about a minute. Then we opened the parachute(降落伞) and just floated downward for about four minutes.Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt, much better than from the hot air balloon.
"Don't stop living just because you are too old" is what I'd like to say,"If there's something you want to experience,go for it.If it's something that is possible, make it happen."
41. What did the writer think of her first hot air balloon ?
42. Why did the writer want to try skydiving at her age ?

44. If you were the writer , would you try skydiving ? Why or why not ?
