An Australian professor is developing a robot to monitor the health of grazing cattle, a development that could bring big changes to a profession that's relied largely on a low-tech approach for decades but is facing a labor shortage.
Salah Sukkarieh, a professor at the University of Sydney, sees robots as necessary given how cattlemen are aging. He is building a four-wheeled robot that will run on solar and electric power. It will use cameras and sensors to monitor the animals. A computer system will analyze the video to determine whether a cow is sick. Radio tags(标签) on the animals will measure temperature changes. The quality of grassland will be tracked by monitoring the shape, color and texture(质地) of grass. That way, cattlemen will know whether they need to move their cattle to another field for nutrition purposes.
Machines have largely taken over planting, watering and harvesting crops such as com and wheat, but the monitoring of cattle has gone through fewer changes.
For Texas cattleman Pete Bonds, it's increasingly difficult to find workers interested in watching cattle. But Bonds doesn't believe a robot is right for the job. Years of experience in the industry—and failed attempts to use technology—have convinced him that the best way to check cattle is with a man on a horse. Bonds, who bought his first cattle almost 50 years ago, still has each of his cowboys inspect 300 or 400 cattle daily and look for signs that an animal is getting sick.
Other cattlemen see more promise in robots. Michael Kelsey Paris, vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, said a robot could be extremely useful given rising concerns about cattle theft. Cattle tend to be kept in remote places and their value has risen, making them appealing targets.
24.What is a problem with the cattle-raising industry?
A. Soil pollution. B. Lack of workers.
C. Aging machines. D. Low profitability.
25.What will Sukkarieh's robot be able to do?
A. Monitor the quality of grass. B. Cure the diseased cattle.
C. Move cattle to another field. D. Predict weather changes.
26.Why does Pete Bonds still hire cowboys to watch cattle?
A. He wants to help them earn a living.
B. He thinks men can do the job better.
C. He is inexperienced in using robots.
D. He enjoys the traditional way of life.
27.How may robots help with cattle watching according to Michael Kelsey?
A. Increase the value of cattle. B. Bring down the cost of labor.
C. Make the job more appealing. D. Keep cattle from being stolen.

Saliha Gündüz, a PhD student, has just handed over her smartphone to one of the founders of The Offline Club, who places it carefully in a “phone hotel”—a locker with dividers that holds up to 60 phones. Gündüz said she didnˈt feel worried yet and she settled down with a cup of tea. “The withdrawal symptoms(脱瘾症状)will kick in later,” she said, “But maybe a withdrawal is whatˈs needed if Iˈm going to cure myself of my addiction.”
The clubˈs founders—Ilya Kneppelhout, Valentijn Klok and Jordy van Bennekom—started the project in 2022 with a plan to host offline weekend getaways. Kneppelhout said, at the time, each of the co-founders felt their phones had been controlling their lives. Earlier that year, he took a short trip to the north of the Netherlands on his own with some books and a journal. No phone. He said something shifted over those four days. “I felt so much creativity and, at the same time, a sense of peace.”
Jordy van Bennekom did the same and loved it. He began organizing weekend getaways in groups in a house in the countryside. Everyone was required to hand over their phones upon arrival. The three-day events were a hit. So, the idea of The Offline Club was born.
There is something that members must follow in the evening. First, there are 45 minutes of quiet time, then a 30-minute break to chat, and then further 30 minutes of time to yourself. Most people bring books to read. Soft music plays in the background as Jordy van Bennekom lays out coloring books and markers for anyone who wants to draw.
Smartphones were prohibited in secondary schools across the country under government guidelines. A similar prohibition was introduced in Dutch primary schools in the 2024-2025 school year. A study by Radboud University found that students were generally supportive of the change, saying breaks were more enjoyable.
28.How did the short trip affect Kneppelhout? ()
A. He changed his career.
B. He gained a sense of achievement.
C. He found the peace of mind.
D. He got free of his phone addiction.
29.Which can best describe the three-day events held by Bennekom? ()
A. Tiring. B. Comforting. C. Popular. D. Stressful.
30.What can be learned about The Offline Club? ()
A. It has strict rules for members.
B. It requires members to bring books.
C. It enjoys great popularity in schools.
D. It studies the effects of phone addiction.
31.Whatˈs studentsˈ attitude towards the smartphone limitation? ()
A. Critical. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Doubtful.

Every organisation has tons of important data to protect. Important business data, customersˈ personal information, and confidential documents that should not be shown to outsiders are a few examples. The safety of data is only made possible by using network safety tools and skills.
The importance of network safety in the modern business has increased since a large part of the workforce started working remotely(远程). Today, office information systems are spread in one huge network across many areas. A centralized system to protect network devices from being attacked doesnˈt exist as it did before. This design leaves more vulnerable(脆弱)points that hackers(黑客)can take advantage of.
A cybercriminal(网络犯罪)can find these vulnerable points and cause damage to the system inside. An incident like this will lead to loss of funds, confidential information, and customer data, and it will also destroy the name of the business.
In March 2020, an international hotel group suffered a major data attack in which the information of 5.2 million guests was accessed(获取)using the login information of two employees. Strong network safety techniques are modern-day necessities for the survival of businesses, but more than that, network safety awareness has also become the need of the hour.
For todayˈs businesses, network safety is not limited to IT professionals and companies connected with it. Network safety is for everyone—lawyers, designers, musicians, bankers, and others will all find a network safety system beneficial for their work and business. By fixing network safety system and training employees on it, a small business will make its employees more responsible, a law office will better protect its data, and a designer will find more effective ways to control their important documents.
32.What does the underlined word “confidential” in paragraph 1 mean? ()
A. Public. B. Informal. C. Secret. D. Unimportant.
33.What probably endangers the network safety? ()
A. The absence of the centralized safety system.
B. The poor modern business environment.
C. The design of the network system.
D. The popularity of working remotely.
34.Why does the author mention the international hotel group in paragraph 4? ()
A. To stress its high position in business.
B. To express the need to protect the network.
C. To show the threat of remote work to the network.
D. To state the effective measures of the group.
35.What can be learned about network safety from the passage? ()
A. Its changes and weaknesses. B. Its difficulties and courses.
C. Its crimes and effects. D. Its challenges and solutions.
