While walking in the woods near my home on Cape Cod, I encountered an elderly man named Morris. Seeing me in a neck brace and using a walking stick, he asked if it was hard for me to get around. I admitted that the greater obstacle often lay not in my physical limits, but in my own mind — hesitation before taking action. Morris listened thoughtfully and said the three magical words I now say to myself nearly every day: “Just show up.”
Those words stayed with me. I applied them whenever excuses arose, whether for exercise or discouraging tasks. My husband Bob embraced the philosophy too, finding it effective in overcoming procrastination (拖延).
Then, a real test came. Kelvin and Amy from the Cape Cod Challenger Club invited me to be the opening day speaker and throw the first pitch at a baseball game for disabled youth. As someone with a profound fear of public speaking, the invitation filled me with terror. Yet, inspired by Morris’s wisdom, I chose to “just show up.”
On the event day, anxiety weighed heavily on me. My speech was far from perfect — I stammered (口吃) and even went blank twice. Instead of masking my fear, I spoke from the heart: “Winning doesn’t matter. Being scared doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that we try!”
Then came the pitch. With the enthusiastic assistance of several children — all facing their own challenges — I steadied myself. Together, we held the ball, and with their support, I threw it forward as everyone cheered, “PLAY BALL!”
In that moment, I understood deeply: it didn’t matter if I stumbled or struggled with words. What mattered was showing up — for the children, for their caregivers, and for myself. Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is simply be there and try.
4. Why was it hard for the author to get around?
A. She felt social pressure. B. She walked unaided.
C. She had physical limits. D. She was lacking in courage.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s performance at the baseball event?
A. She tended to hide her anxiety. B. She had her sights on perfection.
C. She was open about her feelings. D. She was overcome by embarrassment.
6. What does “I steadied myself.” most probably imply in paragraph 5?
A. She was calm and ready. B. She was awkward but caring.
C. She was anxious and uncertain. D. She was sensitive but optimistic.
7. What message does the story convey?
A. Success has the final word. B. The attempt is all that counts.
C. Hard times create strong men. D. Actions speak louder than words.

Writing this week in Nature Communications, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana outlined a strategy for taking extra food waste, transforming it into biofuel, and then “upgrading” that fuel into jet fuel that can go straight into a plane without requiring additional changes to the aircraft’s structure. They compared their food-waste-produced fuel against industry benchmarks and found that it met all the necessary standards for conventional jet fuel. These findings open up the possibility of using food waste to help the aviation industry move closer to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
“In a linear economy, we just produce something, use it, and throw it away. In this project, we take the waste and recover the energy and materials to make a usable product. This fills a missing link in the circular economy,” University of Illinois Urbana professor and corresponding author Yuanhui Zhang said in a statement.
In this new experiment, the team started by collecting food waste from nearby food-processing plants. They then used a chemical process called hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) (水热液化), which essentially copies the way the Earth naturally creates crude oil (原油) from organic matter over millions of years, except without all the waiting.
With plenty of crude oil extracted from the food waste, the researchers then set out to transform it into jet fuel through a two-part process. The first step involved removing salt, ash, water, and other impurities. After that, they used a cleaning process to get rid of other undesirable elements such as nitrogen and oxygen. What remained were the specific hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物) required to make jet fuel.
The findings are a first step to show aviation fuel produced from food waste is at least possible. Actually making enough of it to supply an entire passenger jet, however, is another beast altogether. Scaling up at this level requires time, resources, and deep pockets outside of academia. “Our research helps solve the science and engineering problems, and then the industry can step in,” Zhang said.
8. What do the researchers find about the food-waste jet fuel?
A. It may contribute to sustainability. B. It costs more than traditional fuel.
C. It needs aircraft structure changes. D. It addresses the food waste problem.
9. What is the correct process of producing jet fuel from food waste?
① get rid of undesirable elements
② obtain hydrocarbons
③ get crude oil
④ remove impurities
A. ④①③② B. ③①②④ C. ②①③④ D. ③④①②
10. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Explanation of the HTL process.
B. Methods of food waste collection.
C. Mass production of the new jet fuel.
D. Advantages of biofuel over crude oil.
11. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. From Waste to Wings B. Clean Fuel, Clean Earth
C. Hidden Power of Food Waste D. The Key to Fuel from Waste
D
Many people worry about how much time children spend on screens. Parents often tell their children to put down their digital devices and do something else. Some experts are concerned that phones and social media are making young people more anxious and less social. However, this concern might be overlooking another important group: the elderly.
While much attention is on teenagers, older people are also spending a significant amount of time on screens. They have long been major television viewers, and now they are increasingly using smartphones and tablets. This has led to very long screen sessions, which are becoming a notable part of their daily lives and deserve our attention.
In many ways, the use of digital devices by older people is a good thing. They have much to gain from this technology. Social media and messaging apps help them stay in touch with friends and family who live faraway. They can join online community groups or have appointments with doctors from home. E-commerce makes shopping easier, and endless entertainment is available anytime. A connected retirement can be more fulfilling and enjoyable.
Yet there are also new risks to consider. Unlike teenagers’ devices, older adults’ devices are often connected to credit cards. This makes them targets for online scams (骗局). Governments work to protect children from online dangers, and they must also recognize that the elderly are another group that needs protection. Another cost is misinformation. Older people are more likely than young people to use news apps and can be more easily tricked by false information online. As they switch from traditional TV news to online platforms, they enter a world with less reliable information. This is a problem for society, because older people are the most likely to vote.
The rising screen time among the elderly may lead to a more balanced conversation about our digital lives. When all generations use these technologies, it becomes easier to discuss their benefits and drawbacks. So the next time children are told to get off their phones, they might just look over at their grandparents, who are also busy enjoying their own screens.
12 What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Teenagers suffer from social media overuse.
B. Elderly smartphone use was previously ignored.
C. Experts worry more about the elderly than the young.
D. The elderly spend more time on screens than the young.
13. According to the text, the elderly are more likely to be victims online than young people due to ________.
A. frequent online shopping B. withdrawal from social life
C. technical curiosity aroused by novel software D. the digital divide created by platform migration
14. How does the passage develop?
A. By citing experts’ opinions. B. By analyzing pros and cons.
C. By providing statistical evidence. D. By evaluating different media.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A To regulate teenagers’ screen habits.
B. To predict future screen use patterns.
C. To criticize older adults’ screen overuse.
D. To call for a fuller discussion on digital lives.

It was just past noon on a sunny Saturday last August when Jacob Bell heard screaming coming from the lake, some 50 yards offshore. He sped in his boat toward the scene, where he saw a girl was drowning. Without thinking, he grabbed the girl’s arms and then pulled her through the water to the back of the boat, which was more shallow. There, he was able to lift her up and onto the deck.
As he looked at the unconscious teenager lying on the deck of his boat, he saw her face, her lips, even her ears were blue. But Bell’s recent CPR training kicked in. Just six months earlier, he had taken a first-aid course as required for his job as a truck driver. After Bell kept pressing, she took a deep breath and opened her eyes. She was alive. Once they reached the shore, he continued rushing her to the hospital. She was released later that day.
It didn’t take long for the media to brand Bell a hero. He was uncomfortable with the praise. As he explained to his wife, he once made a lot of mistakes in his life, so the idea of being labeled a hero felt awkward to Bell. But he was happy to get back to work driving for a gas station.
Six weeks after the rescue, as he was driving west of Fort Worth, he soon spotted smoke. He slowed down to see a car that had apparently hit a telephone pole and was upside down. It was on fire. He grabbed a fire extinguisher (灭火器) from inside his truck and hurried down to the burning car. Although he sprayed until the extinguisher was empty, the car kept burning. So he used the metal extinguisher to break the driver’s side window.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
When he reached into the car, he found the driver was still stuck in by his seat belt.

A She tended to hide her anxiety.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B

C It needs aircraft structure changes. D. It addresses the food waste problem.
9. What is the correct process of producing jet fuel from food waste?
① get rid of undesirable elements
② obtain hydrocarbons
③ get crude oil
④ remove impurities
A. ④①③② B. ③①②④ C. ②①③④ D. ③④①②
10. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Explanation of the HTL process.
B. Methods of food waste collection.
C. Mass production of the new jet fuel.
D Advantages of biofuel over crude oil.
11. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. From Waste to Wings B. Clean Fuel, Clean Earth
C. Hidden Power of Food Waste D. The Key to Fuel from Waste
A 9. D 10. C 11. A

根据第四段“With plenty of crude oil extracted from the food waste, the researchers then set out to transform it into jet fuel through a two-part process. The first step involved removing salt, ash, water, and other impurities. After that, they used a cleaning process to get rid of other undesirable elements such as nitrogen and oxygen. What remained were the specific hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物) required to make jet fuel.
根据最后一段“Actually making enough of it to supply an entire passenger jet, however, is another beast altogether. Scaling up at this level requires time, resources, and deep pockets outside of academia. (然而,实际上要制造出足够供应一整架客机的燃料,则是另一回事。在这个层面上扩大规模需要时间、资源以及学术界以外的雄厚资金)”可知,实际上制造出足够供应一整架客机的食物垃圾航空燃料还需要很多努力,所以作者接下来可能会继续谈论这种新型航空燃料的大规模生产。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“They compared their food-waste-produced fuel against industry benchmarks and found that it met all the necessary standards for conventional jet fuel. These findings open up the possibility of using food waste to help the aviation industry move closer to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.(他们将食物垃圾产生的燃料与行业基准进行了比较,发现它符合传统喷气燃料的所有必要标准。这些发现开辟了利用食物垃圾帮助航空业更接近实现净零碳排放目标的可能性)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了研究人员将食物垃圾转化为航空燃料,这种燃料符合传统航空燃料标准,有助于航空业实现净零碳排放目标,为可持续发展做出贡献,所以“从垃圾到机翼”能很好地概括文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选A。

12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. To regulate teenagers’ screen habits.
B. To predict future screen use patterns.
C. To criticize older adults’ screen overuse.
D. To call for a fuller discussion on digital lives.
B 13. D 14. B 15. D

文章第三段“In many ways, the use of digital devices by older people is a good thing. They have much to gain from this fararogy. Social media and messaging apps help them stay in touch with friends and family who live faraway. They can join online community groups or have appointments with doctors from home. E-commerce makes shopping easier, and endless entertainment is available anytime. A connected retirement can be more fulfilling and enjoyable. (在许多方面,老年人使用数字设备是一件好事。他们从这场技术中获益匪浅。社交媒体和即时通讯应用帮助他们与住在远方的朋友和家人保持联系。他们可以加入在线社区团体,也可以在家与医生预约。电子商务使购物更容易,随时随地都有无尽的娱乐。互联的退休生活会更加充实和愉快)”阐述了老年人使用数字设备的好处;第四段“Yet there are also new risks to consider. (然而,也有新的风险需要考虑)”和“This is a problem for society, because older people are the most likely to vote.(这对社会来说是一个问题,因为老年人最有可能投票)”阐述了老年人使用数字设备存在的风险,所以文章是通过分析利弊来展开的。
根据最后一段“The rising screen time among the elderly may lead to a more balanced conversation about our digital lives. When all generations use these technologies, it becomes easier to discuss their benefits and drawbacks. (老年人屏幕使用时间的增加可能会引发关于我们数字生活的更平衡的讨论。当所有世代都使用这些技术时,讨论它们的优缺点就变得更容易了)”可知,最后一段的目的是呼吁对数字生活进行更全面的讨论。故选D。

Hello, everyone!
If I could take one item into space, I would bring some small, carefully sealed tomato seeds. They are tiny, dry, and golden-brown, yet each holds the potential to grow into juicy and red tomatoes. Packed safely, they would carry profound meaning.
What makes seeds precious is that they symbolize life and hope. In the silent and empty environment, watching them take root and grow slowly would constantly remind me of Earth’s energy and the beauty of nature. Never would they fail to bring me warmth and courage when I felt lonely or helpless, as if I were holding a piece of my hometown tightly in the vast universe.

When he reached into the car, he found the driver was still stuck in by his seat belt. Without hesitation, he struggled with all his might to free the trapped driver, though his hands got burned by the intense heat from the fire. After what seemed like an eternity, he managed to cut the seat belt and pull the driver out just as the car was engulfed in flames. The driver, though in shock, was alive, thanks to Bell’s quick actions and bravery. Then the driver was driven to the hospital, and later he expressed his sincere gratitude to Jacob Bell for saving his life.
Soon, the media poured into Bell’s house. They wanted to know more about the man who had once again shown incredible courage and selflessness. Bell, still uncomfortable with the hero label, shared his story modestly. He emphasized that he was just doing what anyone would do in such situations. His wife, proud and supportive, stood by his side, knowing that her husband’s actions were not out of the ordinary for him, but still extraordinary in the eyes of the world. Bell’s story continued to inspire, proving that true heroes are those who act without hesitation to help others, regardless of the risks involved.
